Diagnosis was 1 year ago today
1 year ago today, we heard the word cancer, and our lives changed forever. We totally did not expect it at all. One little spot on my husband's tongue changed everything. But one year later and here we are. Today, my husband went to "Donuts with Dad" at our daughter's elementary school where he will happily have a donut…

Mary's Magic Mouthwash
My radiation doctor wrote a prescription for me for Mary's Magic Mouthwash. When I went to the pharmacy to pick it up, I was informed that it was not covered under my health insurance plan. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance. We have a great plan. Has anyone else ran into this problem? One would think that as…

Opinions about weekly chemo. Yikes!
Does adding weekly 40 mg. Cisplatin to rads just enhance the radiation side effects, or does it add some side effects of its own? I'm post-surgery (June 30) and waiting to start rads in the beginning of September. Here's the thing. The major cancer center in Baltimore where I had my surgery allegedly presented my case to…

Don't care for my doctor
I had a malignant tumor removed from my tongue March of this year. I had the surgery done at Yale and I really liked the surgeon. At my three month visit with him, I complained about my tongue being misformed and he said that it would be simple to fix in a one day surgery. I decline at that point because I really wasn't up…

My follow-up today
I guess everything is ok so far. There is some kind on white patch on the roof of my mouth that he wants to look at in a month. He said I will always be at risk for oral and throat cancer because of smoking. I felt a little scared after I left there and a little depressed. He pretty much said that this is the price I pay…

Late Onset Cervicoscapular Muscular Atrophy--Anyone heard of it?
About two years ago, my left shoulder (the side that got radiated) started to get noticeably weaker and is now sagging about 3 inches lower than my right shoulder. I have limited range of motion when the trapezius muscle needs to be involved--pulling a t-shirt or polo shirt over my head hurts like hell. I did some…

Did anyone not have a neck dissection and just have neck rads instead?
Hi, everyone. I was wondering if anyone had surgery to remove their tumor, had no suspected lymph node involvement, and was not given a neck dissection? At my second opinion post-surgery, they were careful not to criticize the first surgeon for not doing a neck dissection. They said it wasn't necessary in every case.…

Infusion port clot
When I was in treatment I had an infusion port (Port Cath) that, once rads were complete, caused a clot in my right jugular. Ending week #2 of rads & chemo. Already have grade 2 sores.
Week #2 ends tomorrow. Tomorrow I will be able to say "10 treatments down, 22 to go." It could be the addition of once-weekly chemo, which I am told magnifies the radiation side effects, but I have already developed grade 2 mouth sores on the target site (upper gums, left side, back). Today my rad. onc. confirmed it when…
