We may share your information with approved, accredited universities or health systems who use the data solely for cancer-related research. We enter into contracts with these researchers restricting use of the data to the purposes of the outlined research.

How Do We Protect Your Data?

We use appropriate technical, organizational, and administrative security measures to protect any information we hold in our records from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction. Some of those measures include limiting which of our employees have access to the information on a need-to-know basis, as well as requiring that our employees undergo annual privacy and security training and execute confidentiality agreements.

Cancer Survivor’s Network – Full Privacy Notice

The American Cancer Society Cancer Survivors Network (“CSN,” “we” or “us”) offers an interactive, online support community for cancer survivors and caregivers (the Site). The Site is managed by the American Cancer Society and includes pages which are available without a login as well as pages that are available with an account. If you register for an account, you are considered a “Member” of the CSN Site. This privacy notice is our effort to inform you about how we collect, use, disclose and store information that may identify you as an individual (“Personal Information”) when you interact with or use our Site and when you register and become a Member of our Site.

In addition to reviewing this Privacy Notice, Members should also review the Site’s Terms and Conditions of which this Privacy Notice is subject.

What Information Do We Collect and Why?

Information You Provide to Us:

We receive and store information you provide directly to us.

For example, if you register in order to receive full access to the Site, we collect identifiers, such as name, e-mail address, password, zip code, state, and country. We also have access to any information you post on the Site, either in private forums or on the public pages of the Site. We try to include reminders on public pages to remind you when information is viewable by anyone.

Other personal information is requested, but not required. Such information may be used to provide you with personalized and matched content within the site; individual email inquiries may be forwarded to the appropriate department within the American Cancer Society for response.

To investigate and prevent fraudulent activities, unauthorized access to the Site, and other illegal activities; for example, in situations where a Member has violated the Site terms and conditions, a Member’s IP address may be used to report behavior that threatens ACS property or the welfare of members of the CSN community;

To perform research and to evaluate the benefits of this Site;

To create reports or publish excerpts from transcripts; however, personal information (e.g. IP address, email, username, etc.) that might be included in a post are not included in published reports without your consent; and

For any other purposes about which we notify Members and users.

 

With Whom Do We Share Your Personal Information and Why

Vendors

We work with vendors to perform tasks on our behalf such as hosting the CSN Site. The Site is hosted on remote servers by software provided by our third-party vendor, Vanilla Forum. Vanilla Forum has its own Privacy Policy which includes this privacy statement: " Vanilla will not rent or sell potentially personally-identifying and personally-identifying information to anyone.” Our Vendors are required to use your Personal Information solely to provide the services for which they are hired.

Researchers

We may share your information with approved, accredited universities or health systems who use the data solely for cancer-related research. We enter into contracts with these researchers restricting use of the data solely to the purposes of the research proposed and outlined within the contract. We do not provide our Members’ contact information to any outside parties without the user's express consent.

We may share your information with the American Cancer Society, Inc. or its affiliated entities such as the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network to further our mission to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer. In the parts of the site where personal information is entered and viewed, ACS has security measures in place to protect the loss, misuse and alteration of the information under our control. All data entered in the CSN database is regularly backed up and the backup media is securely stored to prevent loss or damage.

Privacy Rights. If you have questions regarding your privacy rights or would like to appeal a response to your privacy request, you may reach the Data Protection Officer for ACS by sending an email to: [email protected]

Subject to applicable law, you may have the right to obtain confirmation regarding whether ACS processes Personal Information about you, request access to your Personal Information, delete your Personal Information remove and/or receive information about the Personal Information that we maintain. To make such a request, please submit a Data Request Form.

Security Breach or Fraud Notification. If you witness or become aware of any suspected privacy or security breach of ACS constituent data (i.e., mishandling, theft, loss, or improper disclosure of personal information) or potentially fraudulent activity, please call our toll-free hotline at 1-800-539-7202 or report online.
