PEG Pain
Hi All...My husband has had 1 chemo and 7 rads. All is going well so far with this (I know it is early). His main problem has been the pain associated with his stomach. He had the PEG put in on March 24, which he is not using yet. Since then, he has had back issues, occasional sharp pain in his right thigh and continual…

Started Treatment at MGH
Hi Folks, I posted the last time at the end of March when I told you that the attempted trans oral robotic surgery didn't work out (tumor to big to get out with clean margins - .8 mm - that's a lot to territory for my small larynx so they left it in). I've got Stage IV supraglottic cancer with three lymph nodes, both…

More questions..
I met with the medical oncologist today who confirmed Stage IV SCC (HPV+). He said the treatment course would be 7 weeks of radiation with chemo (cisplatin) on weeks 1,4, and 7. Sounds very similar to some of the courses I've read on here... so now here comes the questions. He did not bring up the use of a PEG tube, so I…

A Few Questions
Hi All, Ron asked me to post a few questions for him. He is now 3 weeks post treatment and he is not able to swallow and uses the peg tube 100%. He is still having lots of thick mucous which he has to spit out. Sorry to be gross, I don't know how else to say it. He also can not speak very well and when he does his voice is…

"I'm BACK in the saddle again"
(Aerosmith reference) To be completely honest, when my death sentence was commuted (the lung thing), it took awhile to get over, to be sure, but I think I came to think of myself as not just lucky but even indestructible, even immune. Of late, and over the course of the last year or so, no matter what has transpired, and…

Biopsy Today
Today my doctor performed the biopsy of the mass in my nasopharynx. Trips to the OR are never fun but it went well and I'm thankful for all of the great staff at Strong Hospital. Dr. Vandersloot said that the mass appeared smaller than it did several days ago when he found it during a routine scope. He went on to say that…

NED!
Had a CAT-scan yesterday. Results came back today. The Med-Onc did not use the term "NED", but said I'm "all clear". No evidence of the cancer at the primary BOT site, and the neck mass is gone. It is now a little more than two months since my last treatment. The last radiation was Feb. 7 and last chemo was Jan. 25. Still…

"So tell me, grey seal, how does it feel"
(Elton John reference, for a friend) I am not exactly sure what to say. Nearly a month since the dilation, which at the time and in the first week after seemed like a great thing, and now I am sort of worried about me. I do not usually confess such things, but this is real life and it is early in the morning and I have…

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) and hyperbaric therapy (HBO)
Hi! My radiation and chemo treatment ended 9/2009 for squamous-cell on the base of my tongue. I've lost 50-90% of my saliva production, and I've never recovered the ability to taste sweetness. A few months ago I experienced pain in my lower inner gum. Eventually, a piece of bone pushed it's way out through my gum. An oral…

When do they check your status?
I was wondering my husband is on his third weeks of rads and goes for his second round of chemo on Monday. Do they check during treatment to see if the tumor is shrinking. We were advised to not have surgery first because he would loose part of his jaw and most/all of his tongue. I sure hope this treatment works. He may…

2nd belly button and more good news
Today the doctors removed the lymph nodes on the left side of my neck. (hurray)!!! It went exceedingly well. The Doctor made the comment that the nodes were not grown attached to the surrounding tissue. I am going to take that to mean that the cancer had not grown through the nodes into the adjacent tissue. Also he was…

Radiation and root canals
I know this is a really stupid question, but I have to ask... I'm 54, and I've never had a root canal in my life (lot's of fillings as a kid, though). I had radiation for base of the tongue cancer in 2009. Almost immediately after my radiation treatment concluded, I needed a root canal. I didn't have any pain, because I…
