Last Chemo
Wednesday will be my last chemo treatment. Was gearing up for my 6 weeks of radiation, everyday for the next 6 weeks. Wasn't expecting the news from my radiation oncologist on our first visit. She is questioning my lumpectomy surgery, not enough margins removed, and my MRI. Found something that the other hospital might…

Drains! A question
Hi all, Checking in with the collective wisdom here. I'm 2 weeks post surgery (unilateral mastectomy with expander put in on 11/12) and have only a single drain remaining. I'm getting around pretty well and feeling good. I walk 30 mins, 2x day and can do some light work (computer) from home, but I'm still on a narcotic…

DCIS
I have just been diagnosised with DCIS. I have a meeting with my surgeon on Monday...does anyone have advice about questions to ask and decisions I will have to make? I am thinking I would also like to see an oncologist before making any final decisions...does this make sense? Any advice would be appreciated!

Inner Peace.....
I was watching a Medical T.V. show yesterdays and the doctor guest on it proclaimed that the secret to finding lasting inner peace was to finish what you had started. So, I looked around my house to see things I had started but hadn't finished. And, before leaving the house this morning I finished a bottle of Merlot, a…

Should Women Start Mammograms at 40--US Preventive Services Task Force
I just received an email from RealAge that outlined the US Preventive Services Task Force recommendations. I sent them a reply. It is as follows: I am a ten year survivor of breast cancer. It was discovered when I had a mammogram at age 46. It was already 2 cm in size. I had just been to the Dr. for an annual exam and she…

Goodbye hair party
Well, finally had to say goodbye to the hair tonight. Told my grandkids that we were having a "goodbye to Nana's hair party" and they loved it. My son did the honors but had some fun with it during the process. First he made a very sparse mohawk, spiked and all, which my grandson wanted me to keep. Then buzzed it all off.…

still having bone and muscle pain
I had my last chemo on 10 Nov and my last neulasta shot the next day. I am still having bone and muscle pain. Is this normal? I was walking on my treadmill 3 times a day for 10 minutes before the last chemo. Now I can't walk for 5 without mu knees and legs hurting so much I have to stop. Should I call my oncologist or is…

Monday night joke
A teacher is explaining biology to her 4th grade students. 'Human beings are the only animals that stutter,' she says. A little girl raises her hand. 'I had a kitty-cat who stuttered.' The teacher, knowing how precious some of these stories could become, asked the girl to describe the incident. 'Well,' she began, 'I was in…

I feel like a cancer fraud
I know that I have breast cancer. I have had a lumpectomy with a sentinal node biopsy. The biopsy was negative and stage 1b tumor. Now I have to have a mastectomy. I don't have to have chemo or radiation. I feel like this isn't even really cancer. I have to have two surgeries (and yes lose a breast) and take a pill for 5…

Black November: A Turkey's Lament...
When I was a young turkey, new to the coop, My big brother Mike took me out on the stoop, Then he sat me down, and he spoke real slow, And he told me there was something that I had to know; His look and his tone I will always remember, When he told me of the horrors of ..... Black November; "Come about August, now listen…

Mammos after lumpectomy
I have a mammo scheduled on my affected breast on Nov. 30th. I'm nervous because even after 6 months, my breast is still tender. I'm sure it is completely healed but they really smash the breast and I'm sure it will hurt. Anyone had one yet? I'm not worried that they will find anything suspicious because I just finished my…

Chemo Chicks: What did you do during your chemo treatments?
A sister survivor told me she had a "Chemo Care Bag" she took to every treatment--she took her computer and a movie to watch, a book to read . . . My laptop is pretty heavy, so I'm wondering what else I might take. My son is going to load an iPod with music for me, but I'm not very good at just sitting around twiddling my…

Anchors aweigh!!!!
We are leaving today on our cruise. You guys take care of each other while I'm gone...lol! The temp is in the low 80's in Mexico, one day only a threat of thunder storms (after all, it IS November!!!). We are delayed embarking for 3 hours because of an emergency stop for the last cruise...true to form, I called and made…

Chemotherapy hair loss
Everyone keeps telling me to get over the hair loss from chemo, but I just can't. Are there any treatments, oils, vitamins, products, etc. that may stop the hair loss caused by chemotherapy? There are so many hair growth and hair strengthening products, that I am confident that someone has developed something that will…

Accelerated radiation - any experience with it?
I was PMing on Saturday evening with Anne, one of our new members who's going to be starting radiation soon, and she was asking if any of us have any experience with accelerated radiation, i.e., newer types of radiation treatments that are much shorter than the standard treatment. I found some descriptions of a few…
