Stage IV -Folfox dose
My husband is Stage IV with mets to liver. We have opted to do chemo closer to home but have received two different dosage reccomendations for Folfox. One is 130 and the other is 85. Does anyone have any thoughts on the differing amounts. Did Folfox buy time with a good quality of life for anyone? He will also continue…

What a mess!!
My husband went for his 3 month CT scan Friday. He's a three year survivor of squamous ec. He gets a call that the CT revealed a hole in the esophagus and a blood clot in the vein of the liver. Of course that means driving to the U of Chicago again in rush hour traffice which is horrendous. He gets there, no bed so it's…

THE ONCOLOGIST SAYS NO MORE CHEMO
Hi All The dilemma is increasing and the oncologist from Stanford has refused chemo for my sister, 33, with EC stage four. Now we really do not know where to go from here...whether to take a second opinion, what shall we do? She was ready to give chemo ten days back and today even when her vitals were matching the…

An open letter to the Cancer Survivors Network
"proselytize |ˈpräsələˌtīz| verb [ with obj. ] convert or attempt to convert (someone) from one religion, belief, or opinion to another:" [Definition from dictionary] As I understand, CSN has removed a member of this discussion group for proselytizing. I have reviewed your policy regarding religious postings. The two…

ptom -- How ARE you doing?
When you first posted, I must have overlooked or it did not appear until later that your form of EC was the squamous cell form. From what I have read, if I am recalling correctly, this type of EC is on the rise here in North America, that it used to be or still is the more prevalent form in Asian countries. Again, I may be…

American Cancer Society reply to me
Below is the second response I have received regarding William and Loretta. Just wanted to share with all of you: Dear Judy, Thank you for replying with the additional information and request to reinstate William and Loretta Marshall to the CSN Esophageal Cancer discussion boards. I'm very sorry for the unpleasantness this…

Juicing and Supplements
I have been hearing a lot about juicing and supplements here and elsewhere. Just wondering how much all of this actually helps. I know that it cannot hurt, but I am starting to feel like I am missing out on something because I am not doing the juicing. I still have a bit of trouble swallowing, so probably do not get enough…

Don is resting peacefully
Just hopped on to give you all an update on Don. Don continues to rest peacefully at home. Yesterday his medicine was slightly changed to give him more rest and less agitation. There are absolutely no bowel sounds at all, but the kidneys did start working again. This probably is good because at least he won't have any pain…

geocam70--Welcome from Sandy thread
It was great Sandy noticed a newbie: geocam70 and welcomed him. Sounds like he is doing great. That's one important task William and Loretta made sure to happen. They would catch a new member whose information was in another thread. I've seen Bailey, Paul61, Sandy and so many others notice these people. This is so…

Antidepressant
Anybody using them? Went to my primary dr last week complaining of sore throat etc. Expressed how I was hoping it wasn't the cancer coming back. His response was " you need antidepressant because you are obsessive about this returning" REALLY.? Ya think? I was pretty ticked for at the time. But now I'm wondering if maybe…

CAREGIVER'S DILEMMA- TO CRY OR NOT TO CRY?
Hey My sister 33 years old has been diagnosed of stage four EC two months back. Since then we have been struggling to get her the right care. And in the process when the doctors tell her upfront that she has a few months it becomes difficult to keep her spirits up. She has a two year old son and she starts crying saying…

Can milk cause phlegm??
Right now JR is having trouble again swallowing. It seems to be phlegm, mucous. Kathy could never reach the Dr but did get the nurse who said for Jr to stop drinking milk with ovaltine. She said the Ovaltine is fine but not the milk. No milk products of any kind. Can milk cause this???? Please not only read this but pray…

curious about attitudes to medicare
being from a place where full cancer treatment is made available to all regardless of means, I was shocked to read some posts on this site where some elements of cancer treatment could not be 'afforded'. Is it fair to assume that all those posting on sites like this would be in favour of universal medical care? I'm curious…

dysfunction and ingratiation
I just posted a response to a call to "Share what CSN means to me" on a thread started by skiffin16. Look in the head and neck forum under "What CSN means to me" and my post is called "blatant ingratiation". I think you will find it interesting!

Feel like crying
I have been on this board for a year now, and there have been many, many times I felt like crying but no more so than today. I CANNOT believe that William and Loretta are banned from this board, it is just so undemocratic. Has it really come to this? Clearly the person or persons who monitor this site have no idea what…

Types of Esophageal Cancer
I knew this but did not think about it until earlier today. It might help some of the new folks here to know that there are 2 main types of Esophageal cancer and both will be talked about here I am sure. Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus is the type I had. This cancer is usually found in the lower part or distal esophagus…

Judy's Don - recurrence
Hi Everyone Yesterday Don had dialysis and at about 1 a.m this morning, he had a CT scan (it was the first time he had been able to hold down the contrast so they could do it). Today they got the sad news that he does have a recurrence. As he is so weak from the last month, they are unable to do chemo as his body could not…

Second Opinion
Hello, I wanted to ask for your kind help. My 87-year old mother has been receiving treatment for esophageal cancer for over a year and a half. She is receiving treatment at a large and well known clinic/hospital which has a number of oncologists. Despite the good reputation the clinic/hospital has, we were not happy with…

Isn't it Ironic
It just occurred to me that William is no longer here, not because he didn't survive, but because he is a survivor. He is, however, a survivor with opinions, beliefs and 10 years of knowledge that apparently is something not valued by the American Cancer Society. Their website should state that only those who DO NOT…

Protest, move or put up with it?
Many of you are far more articulate than me in your open letters and tributes, but i need to say something. I am a newbie and was halfway through reading a massive post from William about my dads fight against ec and his post was deleted before I read all the links. I am furious. I am angry my dad has a cancer that is…

pet scan vs cat scan
Ed is almost finishing his third round of chemo and his ordered will be ordering a pet scan. This will be his third pet scan, he never orders cat scans with the pet scan and I am wondering why? Don't most oncologist order both scan to compare or am I wrong? He had one cat scan way back in last october when first diagnosed…

jtube for severe weight loss after removal of esophagus
I really need some advice for my 78yr old father who is 10 months post-op esophegectomy. He came home with a j-tube and continuous feed pump. Had that taken out 7 months ago. Has gone from 150 pounds to 110 pounds. Very frail, very weak. I live 1500 miles away and was counting on family closer by to monitor him ans assist…

I've been lurking for 6 months...
I've been reading this forum since mid-March when my husband of nearly 30 years was diagnosed with stage IV esophageal cancer, with mets to his liver and lung. I buried him a week ago. I often thought I'd post and introduce myself when things slowed down a bit, but they never did. Despite that, I was so grateful to have…

It's a very difficult and sobering time here on the forum now...
I'm sure that most of you who have been around for awhile are used to the ebb and flow as patients and caregivers come and go, but for those of us who are still newbies, I joined a scant 3 months ago, this is a difficult time. Reading about Judy and Don's situation has brought me to tears, learning of other more recent…
