    As John mentioned the oral sex part of the equation as far as our age group is concerned. My wife believes she was the main cause of my getting cancer. Has anyone else's wives wondered that?

    Yes, Dave, I, the wife, have wondered it I caused my husband's BOT cancer. As he was not tested for HPV, we will never know. WebMD indicates that someone who has more than 6 partners is at greater risk for HPV. We have been monogamous and married for 37 years!

    After first dignosis back in 2007, the tumor was removed surgically, no rad / chemo treatment. Regular 2-3 month follow-ups for about 2.5-3 yrs. A sore on my tongue reappeared, and I was referred to Yale New Haven, where a more radical surgery was performed(tumor removal,rebuild tongue, neck dissection), followed by 6 weeks of rads and chemo. I am now 6 months post-treatment, feeling almost back to normal.

    Not a conclusive answer to what we have in common. There are so many variables, hpv seems to be the winning scenario at the moment.

    Suffered from L'hermittes Syndrome: Currently and it's actually kinda fun to touch my chin to my chest when sitting down so it's a mild case I'm guessing
    Dry Mouth: Yes but it gets better every day. Still can't go more than about 15 minutes without sipping water. Unless I'm sleeping.
    Loss of Taste: Yes. I'd say it's about 75% back though now.
    Oral Sex: I was married for 10 years so yes but never random partners....

    Passive smoker

    I put my Cancer down to passive smoke. All my life I've been in places that were full of smoke and my partner up till I got Cancer smoked in the house,the living room was always full of smoke from friends and family as I wasn't smoking I could feel the burning of tobacco fumes in my throat and in the morning my mouth tasted cigarette smoke.

    haven't done the survey yet but wouldn't be different from others except for passive smoking. 30 years in the same room as heavy smoker and social places full of smoke before the bans, all my adult life I was in second hand smoke. I read somewhere that this can be more dangerous than smoking

    History of dental/teeth problems - root canals, fillings, etc.  

    (For e.g.,

    # of fillings before diagnosis,

    # of root canals before diagnosis;

    amount of time between previous dental work and diagnosis

    (as i suspect shody dental work contributed to mine)

    Dental work

    I had crowns on every tooth in my mouth, root canals on probably 75%.  I had cavities all my life and two permanent molars pulled before I got out of high school.  I saw a dentist multiple times a year, every year.  My teeth had started to break off at the roots right before my tongue surgery.  Shortly after my tongue cancer, I had all my teeth pulled.  This had been planned before the tongue problem came up.  Having my teeth all pulled helped my health tremendously.  My mouth looks better than it has in years--I had oral lichen planus and it's pretty much gone now.  There was some question as to whether or not my rough crowns contributed to the cancer.  Originally, the ENT thought I bite my tongue in that area, but that actually wasn't possible due to missing teeth.  I'll never know if the crowns were part of the problem, but I don't miss my teeth and I was happy to see them go.
