HAD TO STOP COMPETING AFTER MAJOR LUMBAR SPINE SURGERY IN 99.

CANNOT WAIT TO GET BACK INTO THE GYM BUT FEAR GOING TO THE GYM IS MY IMMUNE SYSTEM IS WEAKENED FROM THE CHEMO / RADIATION. I HAVE NOT LIFTED IN 34 DAYS.

Pre-Diagnosis Symptoms
One thing that I did have after I thought about it and had been diagnosed.

Over a year or so previous to being diagnosed. I would wake up with a swollen soft pallet. It felt like I had a big wad of cotton stuck back in my mouth or throat. After a cup or warm or hot coffee it would return to normal. I dismissed it to snoring at night and dryness in the air. Once I noticed a small dark spot like a blood blister, but it went away that same day, and again I blew it off.

I'm not sure if those symptoms were related or not, but looking back. I feel that they were probably early warnings. At the time I was diagnosed and I was already STG III, I probably already had SCC in the very early stage during those pre-diagnosed symptoms.

There are similarities, but no real commonalities here. Reinforces the importance of HPV+ status in the absence of smoking, drinking and heredity. Environmental causes don't seem to be playing a part here.

I don't think it's that uncommon within our age group.

It is a commonality that the medical community recognizes. The scary part is that like cancer cells, HPV cells can lie dormant within our bodies. Something triggers them to become active. Thoughts of stress, over-weight, nutritional imbalances, all come into play I'm sure.

I know that my wife has her annual exams and HPV is one thing that was tested for, especially considering that I had HPV derived throat cancer. Mainly asking the same questions, could she get it, did she also have it, etc....no to all of those.

So that being said, we have been together for over 20 years. So it would have had to lay dormant more years than that. Unless I contracted it via some other mean. There's just too many unknowns ad present. Cancer is much older and they haven't fully figured that out. HPV is a relatively new kid on the block.

Pre diagnosis
I too can look back and see a few signs. I used to get a feeling like I still needed to swallow something and it just wouldn't go down. Sometimes I would wake up like I was choking on something. I just passed these of like nothing. I would also get tired to my bones but just keepgoing cause I own my own business , well you just keep going and I thought I was just over worked. I don't have any of these symptons now. My body was definately trying to tell me something was happening

OVER WEIGHT
The last time I applied for some Life Insurance I was rated higher as they said I did not fit into what is considered to be "not over weight" for someone who is 5'9" Their charts had a guy at 5'9" with a "normal weight" between 155 and 175 lbs. They could care less about what medical condition and or shape I was actually in. I have not been under 200 lbs. since College when I played Hockey.

SYMPTOMS
Does any one know why a "nail biter" is relevant to cancer? Is it like the urban legend that if you pluck or pull hairs from your nostril you could get brain cancer or clots??

Do the Docs weight more heavily on Smoking VS Drinking or the same % applies??

Some studies I have read indicated that most new H&N cancers are HPV+ and 80% of people are HPV +..indicates a need for more oral screening to catch these before lymph node involvement, which seems to be the way most of these cases are found. My dentist is taking my case to a conference to emphasize the need to do a more thorough oral cancer exam. I had been telling my DDS of swallowing difficulty for quite some time. The mass was not seen until gag reflex evoked and then it was visible.

Some studies I have read indicated that most new H&N cancers are HPV+ and 80% of people are HPV +..indicates a need for more oral screening to catch these before lymph node involvement, which seems to be the way most of these cases are found. My dentist is taking my case to a conference to emphasize the need to do a more thorough oral cancer exam. I had been telling my DDS of swallowing difficulty for quite some time. The mass was not seen until gag reflex evoked and then it was visible.
