Couldn't sleep - so, our statistics
We have had 91 responses of age. The youngest, 29 and oldest, 70. That brings the average age to days before our 48th birthday. One in our 20's; 17 in our 30's; 35 in out 40's' 25 in our 50's; 9 in our 60's and 1 in our 70's.
53 of us were under 50, 3 were just 50.

Wow, Sue! Thanks for your number crunching.
I am also deeply concerned. When I was diagnosed, 6+ years ago, at 45 - I was deemed to be "very young" for BC. Not menopausal, not even perimenopausal.
Although 91 people would hardly count as a viable "study" - more than half of us here were diagnosed when younger than 50. And, up until only about ten years ago, 50 was the beginning of the highest risk age.
Gotta wonder... What's changed? Where the heck is it all coming from? Why??? With less than 10% of cases due to genetic history...
It's damned scary.
Kind regards, Susan0 -

I was Dx June 2009 at age 43....
I was 53 when diagnosed in June of 2009. Have since turned 54 and am finished with my treatments (lumpectomy, chemo and radiation) except for Tamoxifen for 5 years. Found during a routine mammogram - Stage 2.0 -

I know I've read some analyses that the increase in younger diagnoses is at least partly because of the more widespread use of digital mammograms, which makes it more likely to find much smaller tumors in denser (younger) breast tissue.
It's possible that women aren't really getting breast cancer at a younger age overall, but just that technology is now able to find it at a much earlier stage.
I'm probably more inclined to buy into this theory because I myself was diagnosed from a digital mammogram, the tumors were so tiny that every subsequent doctor who looked at the films couldn't believe the radiologist even saw them, and I have very dense breast tissue. So I know I'm not exactly objective here.

Age 56, just diagnosed Jan 2010, Stage IIIA.
Annual mammo 12/09/2009
Callback mammo/ultrasound 12/24/2009 (rescheduled due to Dec 19th snowstorm in DC!)
Biopsy 01/05/2010
Surgery 01/25/2010 Lumpectomy, sentinel node positive, total 8 lymph nodes removed.
Re-excision 02/12/2010 to achieve clean lateral margin
Chemo to start 02/26 (T/C), then radiation.
So glad I ignored recent recommendation for every two yrs mammo. And profoundly grateful that radiologist pushed for biopsy and KNOWING (initial lump was small, with characteristics not associated with cancer. No "watchful waiting" here!0 -

I was dxed in Sept,09 at 70 years. It should have been caught at least 1-2 years earlier and my tumors would not have been as large. I had reports each year of micro calcifications when I had my annual mammogram and somewhere, someone dropped the ball. At least someone should have suggested a ultrasound or MRI, etc. I know its scary to ask for a mammogram or any kind of testing but women need to take health concerns into their own hands. I found my bc and then asked for a mammogram otherwise if I had waited it might not have been caught for another year. Be sure and put the word out to women you know how important it is to have mammograms, self exams and push for more tests if you have concerns. Being dxed at an early stage is the best way to fight any cancer, no matter what age we are.0 -

I was 44 years old when I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. I underwent a lumpectomy, chemo, and radiation. I tested positive for HER2, so... I am also on Herceptin. I will be done with the infusion come Sept-Yippee!
