59 when I was dx a year ago last March 2009. Now 60.
I was diagnosed from my first, baseline mammogram when I turned 40 last year.
Thank goodness I turned 40 before the recent recommendations were issued that women who are not considered "high risk" wait until 50 to have their first mammogram. I have some risk factors, but probably not enough to "qualify," and I don't want to think about what my prognosis would have been if the cancer had had another 10 years to grow.

I look at all the women diagnosed before 50, and wonder how the "professionals" could think changing the "mammo at 40" recommendation would be wise. I even worry about the women who see that and think, "well, I won't wait until 50, but I could put it off for another 6 months/1year/or whatever because of these new guidelines." I was so lucky to catch mine early!0 -

Diagnosed at 54 in September 09. Surgery Oct 09, Chemo from Dec thru Feb. My cancer showed itself as a dimpling of the skin - didn't appear on mammo or ultrasound. Took months to get a dx. Finally a biopsy found the C. So blessed to be able to look forward to LIFE!
I'm so in awe of you girls who are so young and going through this. You're all very special individuals and I'm proud of you.

I was 41 when i was diagnosed in July 2007.
I was 41 late August 2009. I had a lumpectomy and I just did my third A/C treatment. I'm stage IIA Invasive Ductal, ER+, PR+ and HER2+. I am also going through ovary suppression because my estrogen is off the charts. Have 2 kids already and just having my 42nd birthday, it will be OK not to have anymore. (The early menopause might stink)
I've been looking for a board like this for months! I'm glad I found you all.

I was 47 in 2000 when I was first diagnosed (from mammogram): small amount of invasive cancer, DCIS, LCIS. Lumpectomy and radiation in 2000. Cancer-free until 2009; diagnosed with DCIS (from MRI) in same breast. Bilateral mastectomy and immediate DIEP reconstruction. Like my mother and grandmother, I plan to live until I'm 87 (if not longer).

I was/am 50 when diagnosed in Nov 2009. Had my first biopsi at 23, second at 36 (precancer) and the third at 42 (also precancer) Plus Malignant melanoma at 42. You'd think that the cancer dx wouldn't have come as such a surprise, but I don't think we are ever prepared.

I was diagnosed in December 2009 (routine mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy...no family history) at age 57 and three-quarters. I had a lumpectomy on Jan. 4, mammosite brachytherapy (radiation) Jan 18-22 and will start taking Femara tomorrow for the next 5 years.0 -

I totally agree with you JanInMN- in the UK you don't even get offered mammograms until you are 50. As a result it's seen as something that affects post-menopausal women and I don't think younger women realise that they are definitely at risk of it.
When I first noticed a sort of thickening in the breast I just thought it was normal monthly changes due to my periods: didn't even cross my mind that it could be cancer. I think an older woman would have gone straight to the doctor and caught it at an earlier stage.0 -

Too young

age when diagnosed
I was just recently diagnosed January 25th. I am 38 years old. Breast cancer doesnt run in my family. So I have been having some good days and bad days. I have already had one surgery last week 2/9 before my birthday. Lymphnodes are fine, thank goodness; but have to go yet another surgery because of a small section right up along my implant wall they didnt catch. So needless to say the worrying continues.I wish all of you the best of luck & health.
