WELL RENEE YOU ARE AHEAD OF ME
Haven't started radiation yet. I have moved in the midst of my treatment and this had delayed my start date which concerns me. Not sure if waiting 6 weeks after my surgery will cause problems and maybe give the cancer a chance to return sooner. I have an appointment with my oncologists on June 30th which is 2 more weeks, this all seems to be taking so long to be over. I am also experiencing pain since my lumpectomy 3 weeks ago, is this normal. I feel like every time my boobs bounce as I walk there is pain and I find myself holding on to my sore breast to protect it. Would love to have a support group to talk about all the changes so I am happy to have found you all.

Good luck Renee and keep me updated.

    Pain when bouncing...
    Dear RoseyPosey,
You are still healing from 4-6 weeks after surgery. I also felt the pain when I "bounced" Wearing the sports bra helped keep the girls from doing too much of that. I had my Lumpectomy on March 17 and had my first treat on May 13th. The time between surgery and the radiation seemed so long. Now that I am one treatment away from completion of my radiation treatment, it seems that time as gone so quickly. I will be seeing my Med Onc next week to prepare for beginning the meds to target the Hormone receptors.
Hang in there. Take one day at a time.

    radiation
I have 1 more chemo to go (July 1), my question is how long after last chemo does radiation begin? My son returns from Iraq and I would like to be there and it is out of state. My oncologist made it sound like I can't delay radiation is that correct. Any help is appreciated. thanks

    Hi-
I had my last chemo on May 7th and I began rads on June 8th. She said I would have at least a 3 week break in between the treatments- Good Luck!

    I will Angie2U!
I will! I haven't put any creams on yet. According to the care paper I was given, it says to keep the area clean and dry and not use any products containng petroleum. If I see my skin drying, turning red, tanning, or peeling, then I use hydrocirtisone 1% 3x day. I don't know. So, far I'm good. I can't even tell what spots they are actually radiating. But, I am getting lots of rest. Have a good weekend!

Rene, you should have started using creams from day one with rads. Didn't your rads oncologist prescribe something or tell you what to use? I used Biafine for the dark pinkness I got and Aquaphor at night to keep my skin moist and in good condition. Hydro cortisone is mainly for a rash or itching that you might get. But, you can't put anything on for 4 hours prior to your rads treatment. I hope you start using something. Talk to your rads oncologist please.

    You need to use creams
You need to use creams Rene9. Don't wait until your skin turns red, that is too late to help then. I am glad that you are doing so well, but, you need creams on your skin. Glad you are getting lots of rest. Have a great weekend too!

I meet with my radiation oncologist every Monday, so I will definitely ask about using creams before I need to. I am concerned because everyone talks about how they use creams and I was told I don't need anything, but they will keep an eye on the area. I will keep you all informed and thanks for being concerned too. Have a good weekend!

Yes, you be sure and ask
Yes, you be sure and ask him. I have never known, at least on this board, of anyone not using creams from day 1 of rads. Some even started before. You have to keep your skin moist and protected. If your rads oncologist told you that you need nothing, that is something I have never heard before rene. I am just looking out for you. Rads can really do a number on your skin if you don't protect it. Please post to let us know what he says.

good idea to check about the skin care
Sounds like a good idea to check with your Radiation treatment team about the creams/ointments. They were provided to me by the treatment team with the exception of the Aloe gel (Fruit of the Earth or CVS brands).
Finished my radiation treatments yesterday. I started applying the Aquaphor/Hydrophor the day of my Simulation/treatment set-up in the Rad Onc department. I will continue to use it for some weeks to come as I hear I am 'still cooking" The 100% Aloe gel helps with cooling down the hot spots and yes, the hydrocortisone is for the itching under my breast. The creams all come labeled by the department about not using anything for four hours before the daily radiation treatment. I generally apply the Aquaphor right after the treatment and before bed. A camisole helped to contain the greasy ointment and keep it off my clothes.
My skin is pink and tan now with just a little peeling of skin on the nipple. Feeling good and looking forward to getting back to my usual schedule without rad tx.
    Have a great weekend.

Ok-now I'm very concerned, so Monday I will have a deep discussion about creams. I definitely don't want to wait for redness and hot spots to strat using some creams. I'll be in touch Monday. Have a good one-

Yes, you should be using creams like the others wrote. I don't understand why your rads oncologist hasn't told you this. Let us know what he tells you.

    Good luck with rads!

    Rads update-
I'm posting here so it will be at the bottom of the thread...I spoke to my radiation techs and my radiation oncologist this morning. They still say I do not need to use any creams right now. They said they will continue to monitor my skin. They said in a few weeks it may turn darker where they are radiating me and it may peel. But, they will continue to watch it. And I should only use the Arm & Hammer baking soda deodorant without aluminum in that area. So, I am going to do what they say and I'll let everyone know how I progress. One of my co-workers' friend works there as a tech and she has given me the same advice. So, I'm trusting them-

    I've never heard of not
I've never heard of not using creams during rads, but, you need to trust your rads oncologist. Wishing you good luck!

You can also use Tom of Maine's non-aluminum deodorant if you want. You can buy it at any drug store. The rads killed my sweat glands, so, I didn't need nor still don't need any deodorant on that side.

    Another Update-
Going into week 4 of rads. Still haven't used any creams or anything. My skin is the same and still hasn't turned dark in the radiation area. No discomfort with the expanders. Keeping my fingers crossed all continues to go well for the next 2 weeks! Have a great week everyone!

I can't believe you don't use creams. I guess we all have such different treatment with rads. Glad you have no discomfort. I never got darker where I got the rads, I just got a dark pink, but, no burn. Crossing my fingers for you too!

    Good luck!
