Best radiation burn creams?
While hubby is doing ok nutrition wise, he has developed a pretty nasty radiation rash on his neck and upper chest/back. We have been putting on aloe from the yard - any other really good creams or ointments that anyone could suggest?
Thanks so much,
Jen

I used radiaplex from the begining. It is by perscription only and it worked great. My insurance would not pay for it tho. Found out about it from a HNC patient in Texas and had my RO here write me a persription for it.0 -
Biafine
Biafine - a prescription lotion that comes in a tube. I had to take a week hiatus from radiation treatments owing to extreme burning of my skin. They told me if I'd continued, I would have ended up with third degree burns. Biafine cleared it up in a week. My insurance paid for it, but I believe I had to pay a somewhat larger co-pay fee.

Aquaphor
Jen,
Aquaphor is another and usually they can give you some samples to try. I didn't like it personally, but I know a few on here used it and liked it...
Mine just turned pretty dark, dried out and eventually peeled off.
Make sure if Mark goes out to try and stay out of the sun as much as possible right now also.
Best,

I used aloe, aquaphor, biofine (which my insurance would not cover) and silvadene which it did cover..liked silvadene and biofine best. Still had bad burns, opened up like bed sores, needed debridement (which I did at home--ouch) Healed up pretty well, sort of discolored.
Good luck

I also used Aquaphor and it worked magic for me. I was in a lot of pain until I put the
Aquaphor on, then no more pain. I hope you find something that works. Best wishes.

Once again, you are all a wealth of information and inspiration. Thank you for sharing.
We have tried aquaphor and he doesn't like the 'greasy' way it makes him feel. I have tried mixing the aquaphor and aloe together as well. Will ask the doc tomorrow about the Radiaplex, Biafine, and Silvadene.
Thanks,

You are totally right about that. It's like water based vasoline. That's why I liked the Radiaplex. It went in like hand cream. Actually I may have a brand new one up at my parents. I could check and send it to you if you like. I think it was $40.oo
if you would want it pm me ur address. If not that's cool too. I would rather see someone get use of it.0 -

LOL, that thick greasy feel is exactly why I didn't like it myself.... I know I have read on another forum of the Silvadene Cream, but it was more for open and seeping burns. I actually think it's a cream they use for burn victims. But I did read in that particular forum that it worked extremely well.
Sorry that Mark is going through this, unfortunately another "short term" gift of the radiation. Eventually it to will pass, stinks in the mean time though.

I or my wife used aquaphor with some neosporyn mixed in. It helped cool the burning and also helped soften the neck area. she then covered the area with believe it or not saran wrap to keep the mixture where it was needed. We did not do this until I got home as I did not have enough time during the day between radiation(twice a day) to apply anything.
I also had to debride and we used Domeboro soaks and that seemed to help with removing the dead skin. Inpatient they had a cooling bandage that worked wondering when the burining wouldn't stop.
I am like sweet if anyone needs some aquaphor I have like three jars still left at home. they gave us new jars every week of rads.
Best Wishes & prayers

Hi all,
Radiation nurse gave us a tube of XClair cream this morning. She said it is by prescription only so she also wrote a RX for us to fill. We will give this a try for a few days.
Thank you Sweetblood! I will pm you if this cream doesn't help and will try your cream. I asked about Slivadene and was told that it is sulpha based and our doc doesn't like to use it because of many people reacting to it. (says it can burn worse in some people)
The education continues....
Thanks,

Estee Lauder
Hi! My mom was burnt severely from the inside out from radiation. She used a cream by Estee Lauder during all 22 treatments and it was a MIRACLE CREAM. We had tried aquafor etc., but when she lathered this stuff on her neck/face/chest before and after radiation, it clinically helped her. We even tried to contact Estee Lauder to let them know to help others with radiation treatments know about this cream. It truly made a difference. She is asleep at the moment, but when she wakes up either later tonight or tomorrow I will reply with the official cream name. God bless and hang in there. Radiation burn was one of the most painful issues she experienced, literally it burnt her from the inside out, but this cream helped her tremendously. Let you know soon.0 -

Hi,
I am sorry you and your mom are going through this. I know how hard it is to see a parent having to deal with this. My dad just finished treatment for tongue cancer and it has been very stressful for me. He dad's biggest problem was radiation burns on the inside of his throat and tongue. He made it through treatment better then most do. I will pray for your mom and if you ever want to talk, just send me a private message by cliking on Pumakitty.
Prayers.

The Best Radiation Cream - Miaderm
The best radiation cream for me was called, Miaderm, you can only order online at their web site at http://www.miaderm.com. I went through 35 sessions of radiation last June, and I was the only patient in the department (Northwestern, Chicago) who didn't get burn for Head and Neck treatment, only a little flaky skin at the end for 3 days. You have to start 2 weeks before the treatment and use it very religiously twice a day, and continue for 2 weeks after the treatment. The nurses were so impressed with my skin condition that they have since call the rep and start to recommend to all radiation patients. I've recommend to several people, and they all told me it's been helping them even though some are in the middle of the treatments already.0 -

The hospital actually let your Mom put creams on her neck before radiation? Mine was terrible about putting any creams etc before radiaiton. I had twice daily and was only able to put anything on after the afternoon treatment. Best Wishes & Prayers

I was just going to post a similar comment. I know that they warned me and highly advised me, not to put any creams or lotions on before radiation treatments.
