    Naples Railway Station, 7/11/1986
I remember it well. My 25th birthday, and we had a long weekend off from our studies at the American Academy at Rome. Six of us hopped the train down to Sorrento, from there to hit Pompeii and Herculaneum. As we changed trains in the bowels (I use that word advisedly) of the Naples railway station, what were we serenaded at ear-splitting level by?

    At the Copa! Copacabana!
    Hottest spot north of Havana!
    At the Copa! Copacabana!
Music and passion were always the fashion...

As you would guess, the damn song would not get out of our heads. By the time we got to Sorrento, however, it had sprouted lyrics honoring our local "rosticceria," or fast food joint!

    At the Rosty! Rosticceria!
Great place to get the diarrhea!
    At the Rosty! Rosticceria!
Scarfing and bolting was oh so revolting...

If I don't get to sleep tonight for the BM running through my head, Claudia, I know who to blame!

Diarrhea is genetic; it runs in your jeans
Too flippin funny! My daughter/niece is in Venice as we speak...she is 24~ how perfect an age for a summer in Europe is that???

    G'nite BM! LOL

    Hugs,
    Claudia

    No probs...
One of the dogs that Eefy romps around with at the St. Charles doggy park is named "Roo." Roo is a beautiful three year old Great Dane; poor Nubi has a smoldering crush on her. Even if she had the same feelings for him, it's impossible to imagine how they could, shall we say, act upon their mutual attraction.

    It SHOULD be impossible...
Because, hopefully, ALL the dogs were neutered/spayed. Geez...

Yeah, note to Moopy and Joe...
Cat's love for and her collection of Eeyores would amaze you. Unfair advantage, too. Since she lives really close to Disneyland.

    Kind regards, Susan

P.S.: My Piglet collection is rather small. Why? Wait for it... wait for it... Because he is small!

I had to give away my Eeyore collection
when it became clear that Eefy Josephine regarded the whole collection as her puppy toys. Now I just have our original Eeyore, Eeyore Lucius, who has been known to travel with us. Once upon a time on a freeway in mid-Illinois, we looked at the car next to us and saw a couple with an Eeyore riding in their back seat. Eeyore Lucius insisted we honk and let him wave at his fellow donkey-**** until his fellow donkey-**** noticed him. And damned if the other Eeyore didn't wind up in the front seat of his car and wave at us!

Italy was wonderful. I ate like a hog at lunch and supper and never gained weight because we walked around everywhere. I'm glad to hear your young 'un is spending her summer the same way: I know from experience the memories she makes will last her a lifetime. Like my birthday dinner in a rooftop Sorrento restaurant where my buddy Liz (uncharacteristically) got a buzz on and started flirting so aggressively with the waiter that only the sudden thunderstorm which ended our dinner was able to cool her off. She is now a wife, mother, and a department head at a very prestigious university. But every time our paths cross one or the other of us has to bring it up!

    Italy is indeed a special,
Italy is indeed a special, special place. I had the great fortune of being raised in Germany~ and for as long as I can remember, my growing up years were spent alternating summers between Long Island NY and the Adriatic side of Italy. And I have always said, if, for some reason I absolutely had to pick a cuisine I would have to eat for the rest of my life...OMG in a heartbeat it is the food/drink of Italy!!! Northern cuisine and Southern, a person could sooo live forever in gastronomic bliss!

Barry and Mandy sitting in a tree
I just want to go on record as saying that Barry Manilow is indeed talented, and is laughing his commercial self all the way to any FDIC insured bank that still has money in it! LOL I am not saying that I would go to his concerts, or have bought any of his albums, and yet,

Not only did he go to Juilliard right out of high school, he was part of Bette Midler's entourage, and commercially ( literally!) it is Barry Manilow who is responsible for the likes of:

And like a good neighbor, State Farm is there
I am stuck on Bandaid brand, cuz Bandaid's stuck on me
Also the commercial songs for KFC, Pepsi, Jack In the Box ( make Life a little easier) and most well-known : You deserve a break today, at McDonalds....

Mandy and Copacabana notwithstanding ( and admit it, we all who are of a certain age sing to both of those songs ! LOL)~ Manilow is the Pet Rock of commercials! I can only stand back and admire the kitsch and say, Crap! I cudda written those! Only I didn't~ he did! LOL

There may indeed a good reason why his initials are BM~ but as far as commercial success goes, his S**T don't stink! So there! hahahahaha

    Hugs,
    Claudia

    Didn't know
that Barry wrote all of those jingles-wow!!

O Goddesses of Rest and Persuasion (and Hypnotism)
OK, Ok, I will stop fretting about stuff and follow everyone's excellent advice,er, instructions. (Pammy, have you thought about an instructional video?) I will watch dvds, read, and recline in my lounge and snooze.... And get a supply of ice cream and cookies, and maybe a bottle of local wine in honor of Chen.

I need to catch up on everybody's Expressions pages, after all. I hear there are some great audio clips on a certain page....

    Love,
    Moopy

p.s. Thank you, Stef, for the vacuum tip. Will try that on Aortus. If I can keep him from checking your posts.

    Never vacuum again. That is
Never vacuum again. That is what the doctor said. I swear Aortus/Joe that is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Honest, my fingers are not crossed. Vacuuming is very bad forever. Yep!!

    What a novel!
I got to see Bulgakov's gravesite the first time I was in Moscow. The headstone was formed from a rock which once was part of Nikolai Gogol's grave. Which is pretty appropriate, because Bulgakov was a great admirer of Gogol. As am I: this coming semester I get to make my students read The Nose again. You and your daughter might enjoy it too: at very worst, it's much shorter than Brothers Karamazov or War and Peace.

The hyperthermia machine is used to heat a part of the body (in Moopy's case, the chest wall) to render the radiation more effective. The body part is maintained at a temperature of around 105 degrees for an hour either before or after the radiation treatment. Moopy has had both. Her only real complaint about the procedure has to do with the radiation therapists' interesting musical tastes. She theorized once that no cancer cell could possibly withstand the combination of radiation, hyperthermia, and Barry Manilow.

    Radiation music and The Nose
Didn't have Barry "Coco Cabana" Manilow; my therapists went for CCR. :) And they asked me if I minded... Wow! 105 degrees...is this hyperthermia treatment a relatively new procedure?

Thanks for the the recommendation for "The Nose." I think I remember reading it a l-o-o-ong time ago. We'll look for it at the library today. Other recommendations also appreciated. I think Annie will go for Dostoyevski and Tolstoy anyway. She is an insatiable reader...has read every Harry Potter at least 3 times. Our house is in danger of sinking into the ground under the weight of all the books we have. On the beds, under the beds, in all the rooms, in the garage...some even on shelves. I even conducted a purge last year, but it didn't help much. The darn things seem to multiply all by themselves!

BTW, have you read "The Namesake?" - interesting link to Gogol and a great read.

    Mine is
a sad story tonight. Ready to go out and party, but no one to party with. My friends are busy with other commitments and my husband is showing off his plane(Air Force) in an air show across the state. So I got my Taco Bell today, but I'm here tonight-spending time with my cyber buddies(which isn't such a bad place to be if I want to celebrate dancing with NED).Wish the chat room was ready and I had that Java software downloaded-then we could really talk!Oh well, enough of being an Eeyore !

Jets and Eeyore and Resting and Reading
Patty, your husband flies jets?? How cool is that! I've always wanted to see an air show. We visited the Aviation Museum in Pensacola a few years ago. I didn't watch the IMAX movie because I knew I'd lose my cookies, with the view from the cockpit. (That's Navy, though, right? And your hubby is Air Force? Bet there's friendly competition?

Lynn, you just described our house. Literally, I've tucked books under beds and living room furniture. When we first married, I thought we would one day have a house big enough for all of Joe's books. I came to realize that, however big a house we got, there'd be books all around. (I read, too--was a Literature major in college-- but tend to pass them on as there are few that I want to keep. Although I have read the HP books all at least twice, and the Tolkien books I'm keeping.)

And thanks for the suggestion, Marcia. Sorry to force you to post. Very bad of me/us.)

Now you're making me sorry that I gave up all of our Eeyores. We had all sizes, from the very largest to the smallest, about 36 or so, as I recall. We donated them, thinking some kids might enjoy them. All except for Eeyore Lucius, of course. And no, Joe isn't making that up. We traveled always with one or more of our Eeyores. And E. Lucius did wave at his fellow Eeyorian on the highway once.

Hmm, gotta go rest--and avoid vacuuming.

    I thought you
guys might make that mistake after reading my response. No,it isn't a jet-it's a cargo plane called the C-5. He's a flight engineer and he sits right behind the co-pilot. He knows that plane like the back of his hand, and sometimes when another crew is flying some where or on the ground broken-they will call him and ask him how to fix and troubleshoot things-I'm pretty proud of him if you havn't realized yet!!
And how did E. Lucius wave-I'm still not getting that I guess?! Maybe it's just meant to be one of those mysteries of life.Things that make you go hmmm...
I love books and reading! I like to collect old books and books that I read when I was little(horse books by Marguerite Henry). I read the Hobbit books in Sr.High-love them too!I'm a little like Joe in that way,I guess-except for mine still just cover our bookshelves in the family room...

    Antonina W. Bouis
I think I have a shrine to Antonina Bouis in my study. Just about everything written by a modern Russian that gets translated into English has "Translated by Antonina Bouis" on it. I've studied Russian for years (and even understood a fair amount of it between 2005 and 2007, when I took four trips to Russia), it is nothing at all like English. What impresses me about Bouis's work is how she is equally strong at translating poetry, fiction, history - you name it, she translates it. What an amazing woman!

    waiting to celebrate on Wed.
I'm still waiting, maybe its good, you get a chance to let your skin and arm rest.
    hugs, jackie
