Cancer-Fighters in Your Kitchen
Stock your cupboards and fridge with tasty cancer fighters. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in fat is the recipe for breast health, according to numerous studies:
• Whole grain breads and cereals fortified with B vitamins, especially folate. Folate is important in fighting hormone-negative breast cancer.
• Cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale. These are high in Indole-3-Carbonale (I3C) that has been shown to have anti-cancer properties.
• Fruits and vegetables, especially brightly colored. Red and purple plants—red cherries, blueberries, acai—are high in anthocyanins, which are potent antioxidants.
• Green tea, which contains plant chemicals called catechins, a plant chemical that may inhibit the invading capacity of breast cancer cells.
• Flaxseeds, which contain cancer-fighting lignans.
• Organic foods when possible, especially dairy products. Organic food is grown or produced without the use of pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics or growth hormones, all of which are implicated in breast cancer.

Mimi, thank you so much for
Mimi, thank you so much for the information. My healthfood store is really big on recommending the flax seed, and I use it on my cereal or yogurt in the morning. It is really healthy, and has cancer fighting potential. The fruits and veggies at my house are mostly home grown (we live in the south, so early planting is already reaping good crop of tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, okra, etc). You have always been so helpful in keeping us reminded of what we should be eating, and as this is going to be our lifetime lifestyle, we all better get used to the no fat, hormone free foods. I thank you for your thoughts. Hugs.

LOL. I am a junk food junkie, too. Usually I would say "former" junk food junkie, but I fall off the wagon sometimes. Nutrition is at least one thing we have control over to fight this beast....
My rads are going OK so far. On Thursday, I start my boosters and I'm finished next Friday with everything!! My breast is red, but no serious burns or aches. I hope I can hold out for two more weeks.0 -

Judy, do you grind your flax seed? I have them, too, but heard that grinding is how you really get the benefits. Maybe a spice grinder would work?0 -

Yes, this is a good point. I hadn't heard about cherries though. Very interesting. My doctor doesn't recommend soy for estrogen negatives either. I drink rice milk... Thanks for this.

Yes, Many Thanks, Mimi
Hi, Mimi, I had just been looking for your first post on recommended diets. I forgot to print it. Thank you so much for this information as well. I have not been researching nutrition yet. Thank you for sharing the results of your own time, energy, and efforts. It is very good of you.
Glad to hear your rads have gone so well. I hope they continue to do so. We will be doing the happy dance again with you soon.0 -

Thanks for this Mimi. I will print it off too. Nutrition is so important, even if you don't have bc. Thanks again.0 -
Thanks Mimi....
I am starting to stock up on the things I know will be best nutritionally for me. I have found that the healthier foods are way more expensive (tough to do on a budget). I would love to have a list rather than trying to piece it all together....it's hard to do. So thanks for sharing your hard work with us. If anyone runs across a list for er/pr + types I would love to have it. So far I found hormone free string cheese and thats about it. Pammy0 -

Thanks for the info Mimi. There's a really good book by Dr. David Servan Schreiber called Anti-Cancer A New Way of Life. He is the clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh and also the cofounder of the Center for Integrative Medicine. The Center gives a rational and scientific view of natural therapies and their effectivenes combined with standard medical treatments. There are tons of good suggestions for people with cancer and a lot of websites are in the book. The book is one of the most rational approaches I have found to intergrating natural and medical treatments. I had alot of crunchy granola friends who were totally opposed to chemo, radation, etc. I just brushed it off. If vitamins alone cured cancer I think that we would all happily swallow 200 bottles a day.0 -

I don't grind my flax seed, just sprinkle in either oatmeal or cold cereal, or on top of yogurt. The grind does make sense, and I am going to the health food store today and will ask. Sorry about the late post, but I was off the boards yesterday afternoon. Hugs.

Thanks Trish,
I went to a support group where a women was totally against chemo , radiation etc. She was going to a nutrition doctor ,not medical .She has had breast cancer twice in the same breast. I think that what you said is correct about vitamins. If that was the cure, wouldn't that be wonderful!! LOL Diane0
