Where I am from
Hi Susan:
I live in Rocky River, Ohio (a suburb of Cleveland). I just turned 47-years-old on Christmas. I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma on 7-2-08 and had a mastectomy. I had 3 chemo treatments before it was stopped due to chemo toxicity. I am married and have 3 kids (ages 17, 21, & 23) and a 2 month-old grandson. I am a Registered Nurse, and will return to work at the end of January.

Hi!! I'm Doris, 49 years old and I live in Harper Illinois (about 45 minutes southwest of Rockford Illinois) I'll be married 30 years this year. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in July of 2007. I had a mastectomy of my left breast and went through chemo and radiation. Just this last November I had the first stage of reconstruction surgery done!!
It's nice to meet you all!!0 -
I'm from Florida
I was diagnosis with BC 7/24/07, had 3 surgeries in 2wks last one being a mastectomy. Went through chemo, lost the hair and all that goes with chemo...it's a wonder I could remember my name at times. I'm 58yrs old, I'm a R.N. working with anesthesia as their manager in a hospital. My husband of 30 years is very supportive, no reconstruction surgery. My oncologist said "Leave it alone" and I really just don't want any more surgeries. I guess it's a issue that we all must deal with in our own way. But you know life is good now, still have memories, tears and get scared but that will pass in time.....I hope. I still see the doctor every 3 months and get good reports.
I read this site alot and get great comfort and support from so many of you that I don't know. You are all angels in my eyes just special in every way. I'm so glad that you are there, sometimes you are the only ones that understand my feelings.
Have a nice evening and remember "God Loves You"

It will be 3 yrs this April since my occurance with breast cancer.
I am blessed though with all the good people I have met and that are in my life.
There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about it returning. I have a 70% percent chance of it coming back and if it does I will FIGHT IT ALL THE WAY. I still have to take my meds and to Laugh everyday.
God Bless you all

Robert:
My husband was born in the infirmary of the Cherry Point Marine Air Station Base in 1960. His father was with the Air Force Radar Operations and was stationed at the base. Also my husband had training in heating and A/C in the 1980's, but only worked in it for one season. He has worked as a copier repair technician since. We went to NC about 6 years ago, but went to Cherokee and Asheville, we never got to the eastern part of the state to see where he was born. He also lived for a short time in New Bern, but he remembers none of it since he moved to Ohio when he was 18 months old.
I find your story interesting and I am always trying to get the message out for both men and women to be aware of breast cancer. I also try to get the message out about prostate cancer (which my father died of).
I also wish you and your family a Happy & Healthy New Year!

Glad that you found this great site. It really is a wonderful place to be and has given a lot of people hope and companionship during a very stressful time. You are well on your way through this journey. We are all at different stages of this -- some of us just beginning, others who have finished treatment years ago. It's a great mix of people, and everyone is welcome. Best of luck on the next phase of your treatment.
Mimi
PS. I am originally from Michigan. You guys are getting tons of snow up there, huh?0 -

It's nice to know that it is a "small world' and getting smaller all the time! Thanks for your comment and for "spreading the word" about other Male cancers. I just wish the Medical Professionals in this world would too. Maybe some day you and your husband can visit his "old" stompping ground but it has changed over the years I'm sure. For one thing, the old Hospital where your husband was born was torn down shortly after I came here in 1994 for a brand new one. Even the City of New Bern has Grown some, too. We got a Super WalMart a few years ago and they are building a Dunken Donuts!LOL!
See you around the "boards". Hugs. Robert0 -

Hi! It's great hearing where all of you are from. I have been following your stories for a year now and think you are an amazing goup of cancer fighter/survivors.
I have Stage 1 Grade 3 DCIS and Stage 1 Grade 2 Invasive Ductile Carcinoma both in my left breast (yea, I got the 2 for 1 special).
I have had 6 core biopsies, a lumpectomy, sentinnel node biopsy, porta cath in, then out, chemo (A/C) neuprogen shots, 33 rounds of radiation and am now on 5 years of Arimidex. I have 2 grown children and 1 sixteen year old daughter left at home. After chemo ended, I had alot of bone pain and they discovered a tumor in my left shoulder which was not reachable for a biopsy. I have to be scanned every 3 mos. to keep an eye on it. This is my month for re scans, PET, CT, Mammograms, etc. so hold a good thought and say a prayer for me please.
I write poetry to express the many emotions cancer brings with it, they are on the expressions gallery of my home page.
I am very honored to be a part of this amazing group!

I did forget to tell you that I am a health care professional (an RN) which has given me ample opportunity to pass the word about prostate cancer over the years. I have only worked a few days since my diagnosis and surgeries and treatment last July, but I will be returning to work at the end of this month. I plan to educate my patients, co-workers, friends, etc. on the importance of self-exams, screenings, for both males and females regarding breast cancer. (I do know that several nurses on my floor had mammograms after my diagnosis, and 2 had to have biopsies, which fortunately were negative.) I will also attempt to get other health care professionals to do the same thing. I read somewhere the other day that 1 out of 100 cases of breast cancer are in males. I did not realize the frequency was that high.
Someday we do hope to get down to NC again and go to your area so my husband can see where he was born. He doesn't even remember seeing the ocean. We have a few old (black and white) photos of the housing they lived in and a few of the area, including him by the ocean.
Take Care!

Thank you for the welcome! This is an awesome site. I will be starting chemo on January 20th and excited to know that I have a network of people to call upon for support and knowledge.
Where are you in your cancer journey?
I live in central Ohio so we didn't get very much snow. But north of us they got plenty!

Hi Kelly:
I wish you the best with your chemo. I hope you have minimal side effects. Which drugs will you be taking?
I live up by Cleveland, and yes, we have plenty of snow: 12"! I don't mind it, once the roads are cleared. Sounds like more will be coming this week.
Take Care,

We're from the Bay Area
My wife Dorothy was diagnosed with breast cancer this last December and had a mastectomy Jan. 9th. We're from San Jose, CA and my wife is 62 and is retired from her job as a lease manager of a large office building in San Jose. I'm 67 and still work as an engineer for a company which manufactures headsets. I'm currently on a 4 month leave of absence to care for my wife. We have 4 boys who have also flown the coop and two granddaughters. My wife will start her chemo in a few weeks, probably followed by radiation, and then when she feels like it, I think we'll take a few weeks and spend some time in Cozumel, Mexico--our home away from home. I love the friendship, kindness, and wisdom of the people on this network and am truly grateful for the welcome that has been shown me.0 -

Hi Kelly,
I am on my second cycle of chemo right now. I go for my third next Friday. How was your first round? I hope you are feeling OK. It can be a long and lonely journey, so keep posting here and reading even if you don't. There are days and weeks when I just don't feel like posting or even seeing the words "breast" or "cancer." But the support here is great. Let us know how you're doing.

I am a Californian born and bred. Started life in San Francisco and the farthest I got was Suisun which is halfway between Sacramento and San Francisco. It was a small town (3000) when we moved here but it has grown quite a bit in 32 years. My husband and I like it here and have no plans to leave anytime soon. All of my medical treatment facilities are no more than 45 minutes from our home so that is a big plus. Where I be receiving radiation is a 10 minute drive from my house so that is fantastic.0
