I've had both types ofclederman said:Can you all tell me what type
Can you all tell me what type of anesthesia you used? I am being given a choice of twlight or general anesthesia. Both carry worries from my end. Twlight I am afraid it will hurt (me and medical procedures do not get along) GA and I am concerned about my heart palpatations and my obesity. Let me know what your experiences were
I've had both types of sedation. My first colonoscopy years ago and the port insertion last year were done under twilight sedation.
Except for a brief moment, I was pretty much out for the colonoscopy.
I was awake during the whole port insertion process, but it was very quick and I didn't feel any pain since they had also given me a local anesthetic.
I've had general anesthesia for both my D&Cs, two most recent colonoscopies and hysterectomy.
I've had no problems with either form of anesthesia, despite being obese and having a naturally fast heart rate. When I have a choice, I prefer the general anesthesia since that ensures an anesthesiologist will be in the room during the procedure. This isn't always the case during twilight sedation where the doctor performing the procedure may also administer the sedation drugs.

For an easy and quick procedure like a D&C twilight sedation is just fine...I've had it several times (at least 5 different procedures) and I always fall asleep (excpet when I had my port put in and the doc kept talking to me the whole time). For my D&C i remember saying hi to my doc and then I don't remember anything until they woke me up and for that I had twilight sedation...I have no memory of the procedure and no pain at all...
if you have general anesthesia they will have to put a breathing tube in you...it's more than just a little medicine in your iv...and since the procedure is easy and quick the twilight will keep you from feeling and remembering any pain or anything and you don't have the risks of general anesthesia...

twilight
I had Twilight all three times. Never had a problem with it. all of my D/C's were less than 1 hour long. You should not worry. As long as your EKG is okay, you are good to go. Don't forget the Cytotec. That was my main problem because of my closed cervix.

Procedure Friday
So my D & C is scheduled for Friday. Doc calls today and says that even though I am only having twilight she wants a chest xray and EKG because of my weight. Now I am terrified. If she has concerns then clearly there is more risk than I thought

Clederman, I am not
Clederman, I am not overweight and other than having had cancer, I'm very healthy. I had to have an EKG and xray prior to my D&C too. Just wanted you to know that it is not uncommon for doctors to make sure all is well so that they can avoid any potential issues or at the very least, be prepared for possible problems. While there is always a risk with surgery, they have come a long way in managing us while we are under.
I hope this helps!

D & C
Hi all,
D & C went fine. Didn't feel any pain and even though I was terrified about anesthesia, I came out just fine. She found a polyp and is 99% sure that was the cause of the bleeding. She scraped the lining and I have an appointment Wednesday for the results.

There isclederman said:Now I am back
Well I started bleeding again. Terrified. My pathology was clear but she did have one fibroid she could not get out. Is it possible that even with clear pathology that the one she left behind could be cancerous? Doc appt tomorrow
the procedure called myomectomy that could remove the fibroid in question and determine if it is benign (almost always) or not.

Having had a myomectomy 30
Having had a myomectomy 30 yrs ago (with a small low transverse incision), and having just had a vaginal hysterectomy with laparoscopy, I would say that the myomectomy was definitely harder to recover from. Honestly, if they would let you have a vaginal laparascopic total hysterectomy, then you would never have to worry about it again.
But to reassure you, the chances of them having missed malignancy are very low.
