Found New Help for Saliva
Hello All,
My new fantastic Dentist who is very knowledged in new treatments and cancer, had me try a product that has come out and for me, it is fantastic! It is called "NeutraSal", a supersaturated Calicum Phosphate Rinse. Within 2 days I experienced a better result in helping my dry mouth. The best I have tried. You are to use it anywhere from 2-10 times a day. Since he only gave me 6 little packets to try, I used only 2 the first day. Felt some relief. Than I hoarded it and used 1 Pack (adding a tad bit more water) for the next 5. I was sold. Can't wait to try more once I get my new prescription delivery. Wow. Unfortunately you do need a Drs prescription but check it out on line for info on getting it reduced, like your initial free and the next 10 free. You mix it with an oz of water and swish. It is so easy to carry, purse or pocket. Please check it out. Best I have found and have tried them all. Check with your Denist first since he can set you up on line. Let me know if you try it, what you think. Also, I was put on Gabapentin for nerve pain. I had one very small stubborn spot on the side of my younger (not even the cancer side, go figure). Was having some bad reactions to the Gabapentin. Talked with my Dentist if he could give me a shot for the burning, throbbing pain. He did a very light laser treatment. Already feeling some relief. He will do a tad more. I can eat more without the painful discomfort, burning. Will ask about a few areas towards the back of the tongue and get them zapped if possible. Should make moving forward eating less painful. YEAH !!

Thank you for the recommendation!
I am writing down all the recommendations so I can have it all lined up when I start rads later this month or early September. Will ask about NeutraSal!
If you don't mind my asking, what sort of reaction did you have to Gabapentin? I was told that I would be started on Gabapentin almost right after the rads started.
Did your dentist laser areas that were sore in your mouth as a result of the rads? Sorry for all the questions. I'm a newbie.

Joanne, did the Gabapentin help you? I was told by the rad. onc. that if started soon into treatment and then liquid Oxy was gradually added when the pain started, most patients were able to continue to swallow pretty well and didn't end up needing a PEG, even if they were getting rads 5 days a week and once-weekly chemo. Was that your experience, or is the doc being overly-optimistic?

My husband is in week 6 of his 7 week proton therapy and weekly cisplatin. He started on Gabapentin around week 2 and ramped up to 3 pills 3 times a day. He has had no pain and has not needed any Oxycodone.

SylMarie Gabapentin & Lazer
Hi, I did not take Gabapentin during treatment. My mouth reacted so bad by Week 2 they had to put me on Liquid Oxy and eventually small dosage of Morphine. I started taking it by the 3rd month of Recovery ( I am almost at the end of Month 4) for nerve pain in back of tongue and along right of the tongue. Just quit due to developing Restless Leg Sydrome and patches of hair loss. These aren't usually side effects of Gabapentin but than again, I have always been a bit abi-normal. My Dentist did the laser to help a patch on the right side of my tongue that constantly burned and was worse when eating. It is much better since he did it. It is too bad I had not met him prior to treatment. He said he could have helped me a lot with the horrible mouth sores. Just glad I found him now. He did a fellowship summer at John Hopkins in the Cancer H&N Dept. He is so much more current and knowledged than my old Dentist. Hope this answers your questions. If you have more, please feel free to ask. Good Luck, hugs, Lisa

My Dentist who had me try this was told on-back order, my Mail order Pharmacy said same thing, Walgreens said same thing. Guess we should all contact the Company and tell them to get their butt in gear and get this stuff out. Check with your Dentist he can set you up or give you a Prescription. Now it's just a waiting game. I am so bummed. Lisa

My husband got neutra sal
My husband got neutra sal from the radiation doc. The nurse filled out a form and the company sent some to us for free. We also got some leftover from a former H&N patient that the radiation doctor had treated. We met the former patient in the office one day, and he sent us a box through the mail.

Hoping it helps
for hubby. He is 3 years out and needs to have a drink with him at all times. I printed the form from their website and he has his 4 month check ups tomorrow. I will let all the old timers here know if it works for those who suffer the long term effects

Way to expensive
I just checked our insurance and it does not cover the Neutrasal. it would cost over $5000 for a 90 day supply. Did some research and it appears Caphosol is equal to it and insurance covers that one. Will let you know how it goes?

Caphosol
Sandy, Please keep me posted on this different swish. I really loved the Neutralsal I got to try and my Insurance did cover it but if I can't get it, I will try anything. Hope it works great, can't wait to hear. Lisa
