Just wanted to say hello and
Just wanted to say hello and how sorry I am that this is happening to your poor husband. It is scary, but it's awesome he has you, someone who has put up the good fight yourself, to get him through this. Welcome to our group. Take care

    Squamous cell tongue cancer
My husband was diagnosed with squamous cell base of tongue cancer stage 2 at the end of June 2011. He has been going through radiation (35 treatments) and chemo (once a week for 7 weeks) now since july 7th. He lost so much weight that after 3 weeks they put a feeding tube in him. He lost weight though because of the chemo. It made food taste to bad, and he wouldn't or couldn't eat. After the surgery for the feeding tube, I noticed his tempature was going up (this was the same day of surgery), I took him to the er, and they kept him in the hospital for 7 days. Hes been home now for 8 days, and doing much better. It's extremly important to get food down you, for the cancer and the chemo use up so many calories. He needs 2600 calories a day just to maintain his weight. And 100g of protein a day. He seems to be doing much better now, he has 8 more radiation treatments and 1 more chemo! The feeding tube, they tell me will probably be in him at least another month, maybe 2! He was a slim man to begin with, so if anybody is going thru this don't hesitate to get the feeding tube. I hear in some cases they put the tube in before your treatment even starts. I don't know yet if he is going to be cured, but I have faith! This has been the hardest thing I have ever gone through, I cry everyday! But there is alot of people that are cured of this very same cancer, so he will be too! If I can help anybody out there just let me know. I do want to add that my husband had a sore throat for 5 years and went to many differnt doctors! They all said it was alleries and would give him nasal sprays etc. Don't give up if you know the doctor didn't look hard enough or in your gut you know its more then what they are saying. Doctors are only human and they call it a practice because they are all practicing! They make mistakes. We still have to trust them and have faith in them. God bless

    had same thing!!!
was diagnosed Dec of 2010..had no insurance so put it off...didn't want to go to doctors cuz of being afraid of them all my life..turned out my manager at work...his father had same symptoms as me..and he could tell...BUT DIDN'T TELL ME ...ANYWAY...no insurance..went to ER..etc. etc..went to dr. ...so BOLDLY SAID "YOU ARE GONNA DIE!!! U HAVE CANCER"...WELL HELLO!!!. absolutely no sympathy whatsoever...ended up my chemo "basically" doctor got me in...( after about 1 month wait..because of radiation doctor)....said ..."this girl has to go get help!!"...i wouldn't ask till after it was alldone...but only had 2 weeks left to live if that doctor wouldn't have got his radiation doctors **** going....it grew so fast "my lump"...was cleared last year...they did heaviest chemo...then 7 weeks of radiation...sorry...don't look cute anymore. had to pull all my teeth..BUT NOW I HAVE SPARKLY NEW WHITE ONES..HA HA ...I think positive...hard to eat yet...but getting better...still worth all the crap cuz I believe I wasn't ready to go yet...anyone else feel same way? Also....would like to know if a man out there would think a girl is still
    pretty
after the way the neck turns out from all the treatments?

    Welcome Bob...
So sorry for your situation and wife's diagnosis....

Welcome to the forum, you found a great place to be.

    First, check out the SuperThread, ton's of newbie info and links;

    SuperThread

Next, stay calm as you can, maintain a positive attitude. Most importantly, know that this is very doable and has a pretty high success rate.

It's definitely not a cake walk, and is a rough diet to say the least...but very doable.

    Thoughts & Prayers,
    John

    Posting guidance
    John,
Being new to this forum and this journey we have embarked on, I was wondering what information I should or shouldn't be posting. I feel the need to share what is happening with our situation and the information we're receiving from our doctors, but don't want to inundate this board, which I'm hoping will be my support group, with stuff that may not be relevant. I've started a journal in order to help keep up with all the procedures that have already been performed and their results. Should I post that information, so this board can tell Vickie and I if we are on the right path or perhaps enhance our knowledge about what were having done and being told?
We look forward to your feedback.

I'm not John, but there is a section on this Cancer Survivors Network, (CSN) called MY CSN Space. You can find this area by going to the upper left hand corner of this page, and under the burgundy tab that says CSN, you will see My CSN Space. There will be a few things to click on, like an about me section, expressions, resources, and the blog section. You can also get to this page by clicking on your own name in the blue box to the left of your post. The blog would be an excellent spot for your journal and story. A lot of us also post our more personal things and photos on the expressions pages.

You can always post on the board, as well, any question that you have. I always tried to do a search before I posted my question to see what has already been covered on that topic. Well, and now you can also check the HNC Superthread to see if there is a link there that will help. But of course there is always a need to bounce stuff off of others even after you read about it, so you can always post a question or concern. Also, there is a chat room here that you can access. I have only been on a couple times, because 99% of the time I am on my iphone, and cannot access it from there.

Sorry, John. I shut up now. LOL. I firgure you might be busy fishing since it's saturday. Or are you watching The Proposal, too? :D

    Dawn.....
You apparently know my habits way too well.....

    Yes, I was fishing this morning...started out really pretty if you look at the rainbow in this photo;

    Rainbow over Gandy

Bob, I think Dawn pretty much covered everything....

I pretty much post anything and everything one time or another.

I figure that if I have a question concerning cancer, treatment, symptoms, recovery or surival...someone else has had the same going on too.

    Best,
    John

    Rainbow Morning
It was for a little while...I saw a big band of rain and storms this morning before going, but they all looked like they were going to be north of where I was going....

Wrong, when they finally showed up after a few hours they were headed right for us....just made the ramp and got the but loaded before the thunder and lightning engulfed us.

Your post was fine, lol. I probably shouldn't have answered for John, but he will deal with it, he knows if he gets out of line I will punch him in the throat.

John's wife was watching The Proposal, not me. I'm not a stalker, I swear. I only know that because I saw her post on Facebook.

    Awww Bob....
Come on now.... I'm out fishing a little, and you're gonna kick me to the curb...LOL.

You're good, Dawn, my wife and I are good friends...at least for never actually meeting LOL....as well as many others on here.

There are several here that tend to post frequently (and in my case, probably to others annoyance of hearing me yet again tell someone my history, LOL...) but we enjoy helping others get their feet wet on the forum and with treatment.

It's our way of giving back I suppose...and we also have a little fun with it as you can tell.

Man, I can feel my throat starting to ache a little already.....Dawn, you don't have my voodoo doll out flicking me in the throat do you....

    South Padre Island
So I guess you frequent Aransas Pass also while there....

I haven't been to Padre Island, but visited Corpus many years ago.

Padre Island looks a lot like St. George Island in the panhandle of Florida. Shelley (my wife) and I vacation there sometimes in October or May.

Oh, Aransas Pass....my ex was born in Aransas Pass, that's why I'm familiar with the area.

    South Padre Island
South Padre Island, not to be confused with Padre Island, is located further south, across the bridge from Port Isabel, Tx. It's about 25 miles from the Mexican border town of Matamoras. A little drive for us, but we think it's well worth it. When I get a little smarter on how to post pictures, I'll show you some of our fish.
Vickie has her biopsy this Tuesday. They say she can't talk for three days and only speak in a normal voice for two weeks after that.
Her ENT doctor wants to but her on chemo right away, then remove her lymph nodes after that. We seem to be at their mercy, not knowing what's best. I'll keep posting hoping that you folks will recognize anything extra or out of the ordinary that we should be aware of.
