J

Hi to all of you, my cherished friends! I haven't posted until now as first, I didn't know anything until yesterday, and second, I have been so sick with the flu. Yep, I got the flu shot and came down with it! I can't remember the last time I had the flu, but, this was bad. It was just the regular/seasonal flu shot that I got and it wasn't but probably 4 hours later, I was one sick puppy. I did go ahead and have the bone scan, diagnostic mammo and the ultrasound as I no longer had a fever.

The bone scan was clean of cancer! YEA! YIPPEE! WOOHOO! I danced my first dance with NED! However, my rads oncologist has ordered a CAT scan for me as there is something wrong according to the report. They want to see if there is an obstruction, infection, cyst or just what it is that showed up on the scan. So, they sent me home with that wonderful berrium crap to drink 1 1/2 hours before I go and then I will get another one when I show up. I am to have the CAT scan done on November 2. So, it is GOOD news that no cancer showed up, but, we still need to find out why I am having the pain.

The diagnostic mammogram was clean of cancer! So, YEA, YIPPEE and WOOHOO again! And, a big WHEW! The tech was so sweet, so gentle, so caring. So, I am dancing my 2nd dance with NED! This was my first one since this last bc and I was scared, needless to say. But, I got thru it thanks to the tech.

The ultrasound showed 3 complex cysts with debris in them and 1 septated cyst. I know, it is Greek to me except for the cyst part. These did not show up on the mammo, but, they have been there ever since I had the lumpectomy. I kept telling everyone about them, but, everyone just kept saying that it was scar tissue, which made no sense, because I have never had scar tissue with any of my incisions. So, I have an appointment Oct. 28 with a surgeon for a consultation. What he will probably do is a needle aspiration of the cysts to test the fluid or debris for cancer, if he can get enough. And, if the fluid is not cancer, hopefully, the cysts will just deflate and dissolve. This was good news as I was afraid I would have to have surgery again to remove them, which could still happen, but, let's hope not. I am praying that he can get enough fluid from them to test and that it shows no cancer! Then, I can REALLY Yea, Yippee and Woohoo again and have NED dancing with me always! So, please continue your prayers for me as I still need them!
J
I apologize that this is so long, but, I am trying to explain what I was told and what I will still be having done to hopefully give me dances with NED forever! I have to admit, those couple of dances with NED were great! Now, if I can just get him to stay, I will be one very happy camper. Having bc is horrible, having it twice is beyond horrible. And, I know that others have had it more than that, but, I am just speaking for myself, and, my heart goes out to them, as having it twice was a real shock to me. My first time was in 1985 and I was so young. But, after so many years, I thought I was safe. But, I am fighting it and will continue as I still have a lot of life yet and I love my life.

Now, how can I thank each of you wonderful, sweet friends? Just saying thank you for your caring words and support just doesn't seem like enough. As I read what you posted, I would smile, my heart would feel whole, and at times, tears would fall down my cheeks. I am so blessed to have each and every one of you in my life, to have found you at a time when my need was so high for help, support, encouragement and advice. You are all my angels! You came and still do come to me when I need you and I just hope and pray that I have and can do that always for each of you. Thank you my dear sweet friends!♥

J

I knew NED had somewhere to go when he left me this weekend. Congratulations on the good diagnoses, and you will be in my prayers that the scan shows nothing. I'm glad you are feeling better. Having the flu stinks. Just keep NED dancing!!!!!

Jeanne!! Thank god for the great news! We were so worried about you. We have great imaginations here at CSN and let me tell you they were on overdrive!

Well, first let me congratulate you on snagging another date with NED! What great news. I'll bet the cysts will be nothing. I've had multiple cysts since my lumpectomy and no one seems to be worried. The clean bone scan news is, of course, beyond wonderful. I hope the CAT scan will diagnose the problem properly and you will get the right treatment. But NO cancer!!!

Hope you are feeling better now. The flu sucks. Keep resting up.

I can now get on with my day without worrying about you. So happy to hear from you.

I just was so sick and didn't know anything to tell you until yesterday. And, trust me, my mind was in overdrive too in wondering as to what is going on with me.

I pray that these cysts are nothing. I will find out at least one way or the other, and, I am only thinking positive!

I hope that the CAT scan just shows something that is very easily taken care of. I am still blaming working in my flower gardens too hard, but, the rads oncologist just smiles at me and shakes his head when I say that. But, there again, what does he know???? lol

I had to keep my "twirling" down to a minimum since I still have the flu. But, when I get over it and get that last and FINAL dance with NED...OH BABY...You will see "twirling" like you never have before!!!!!!!!!

Glad NED is around. Hope he stays. There are two flu's going around so maybe your flu shot will still protect you. I had the flu a couple weeks ago too and it is not fun. May the rest of your tests come out good. Hugs.

And that NED has shined his dancing shoes once again for a long-lasting whirl around the dance floor with you is FABULOUS!!! I thought I heard dance music playing!! Whooooo Hoooo!

When they say you are NED, does that mean that you are free of cancer now? And, who did invent that? I really like it!

Sue, it means that there is no evidence of disease in your body. Some doctors interpret that as cancer-free and others say you are in remission. Always there is a "as far as we know" implied there, but it's pretty darn good and as much as we can hope for. In a way, even people who have never had cancer can never really be said to be 100% cancer free, because we never know for sure. So, NED is something that can apply to everyone.

This is confusing sometimes. Some say they are cancer free and others say they are in remission. I guess they are the same things then? I hope that I can dance with NED soon then too! Sounds like a good dance! Thanks again!

I've also heard remission used in the case of people who are Stage IV, meaning that they are stable, but it is assumed that there is still cancer somewhere in their body, inactive at the moment. It is confusing, for sure.

As always, thanks Mimi for your answers. I get confused as to what to say too when people ask. Although, my oncologist did tell me that I was cured. That was the word he used, but, not sure that he should say that. And, not sure that I believe it.

I was told cured too and I was glad to hear it. But, I think you are right, they probably really can't nor should say that. But, it made my husband and I happy for that minute to hear it.

Jeanne
I am so glad we are hearing from you but I can see that you wanted to have all the information you could before reporting to your battalion of warriors. Glad for the good results and prayers that the cysts are deflated and no surgery needed and most importantly that they have no dam* cancer in them. If you don't mind my asking what area are they looking at with the CT scan. Sounds abdominal, intestinal. Not trying to be noisy, just curious.
As for the help, support, encouragement and advice, right back at ya gal. I loved your good friends are like stars remark.
So again, my prayers and a big old cyberhug that the rest of the tests show that NED is here to stay. I think I hear that square dance caller shouting your name. So let's all join hands and circle the ring, stop where you are and give NED a swing, swing that little gal behind you, etc. That is all I remember from a square dance I learned back in my girl scout days. I also remember the Greek dance we learned. I am such a fount of useless information and it pops up at the most peculiar times.
Happy all is well,
Stef

Hi Stef! Yes, the CAT scan is for the abdominal and the pelvic area. Ask me anything, anytime. I have no secrets from all of you. Well, I might hold a few things back. hehe

And, thanks for your square dance cheer! It put a huge smile on my face!

You are welcome. Can't think of anyone right now that I would rather give a smile to. So get out that big petticoat and the bloomers and twirl around the floor.
And again, I will be praying that the CAT scan is good also. Good news is the order of the day.

So you are holding back information. Well, we have ways to make you talk. Yes, we do. LOL
Actually I am the same way. I pretty much put it all out here. This site is like the safe haven.

I think I understand the recurrence issue. I have had several cancers, but they are all different primaries and you would think that would freak me out, but I am more fearful and concerned of a recurrence with any of them. Go figure.

Didn't you have abdominal cancer? What were your symptoms, if you don't mind me asking.

Yes, I thought I was cancer free after 23 plus years, so, it was a huge shock. But, it was a new cancer, not a recurrence. All of my doctors say that is good, so, I will just accept that, fight it and live a full and happy life!

I had uterine cancer. But I did have gallstones and had my gallbladder removed 8 or 9 months after the uterine cancer. With the gallstones I had the worst pain in my upper abdominal area and around the back. It would come on suddenly and would be waves of pain, sometimes it would cause me to vomit and then after a few hours it would go away. At first it wasn't so bad but it got progressively worse. Soon it was happening every time I ate or drank anything. I was so worried it was a cancer. They got me in as soon as I was smart enough to actually call for an appointment. Two weeks later, I had a CAT Scan (yes, that lovely stuff ugh) and three days later they called me to schedule the surgery. It was supposed to be a month later but I told them that I wasn't able to eat or drink. They had me come in and saw that I had lost quite a bit of weight from the 17 days before so they rescheduled the surgery for 2 days later I think. They said they were going to try and do it laproscopically but because of the hysterectomy they might have to go to the other type with a wide incision and a 10 day hospital stay. So I went in not knowing if I was going to wake up and go home or wake up in the hospital. Kind of what happened with Pammy. But I was more fortunate, they did it by lap and I went home that afternoon. Now I don't know if it was because I had been in such pain, or that 8 or 9 months before I had cancer and a hysterectomy but I had my surgery on Friday, went to the store with my hubby on Saturday, drove to the mall myself and shopped on Sunday and surprised my boss and all the kids in the band by showing up for work on Monday. There was a set of twins that played clarinet in the band and their dad did the surgery. He had suggested I take two weeks off so I told them not to rat me out. But when I went for the 1 week visit they had. I did, of course, follow all his other advice about straining, lifting, vacuuming, etc. I felt good but I was not taking any chances.
I hope that this turns out to be nothing or at least noncancer. While gallbladder surgery isn't great, it beats cancer by a mile. And then there are cysts and other things. My prayers are that this turns out okay. I am sure you said before, but what symptoms are you having?
WHat your doctor said is probably valid, but who wants either a new cancer, a recurrence or a different cancer. I sure didn't and I know you didn't either. We're done, mark us paid in full.

I don't want to discourage anyone from getting the flu shot. I am sure that my getting the flu hours after getting the shot was just some freaky thing. And, my immune system is compromised, so, that didn't help. But, I am not for sure I will ever get one again quite honestly.

I am sure you know that you absolutley CANNOT get the flu from the flu shot! It is not made from anything live; and the shot takes a good 10 days to 2 weeks to build up antibodies and shield us from whatever strain of flu is floating around! If we get ill immediately following the shot, well, it's that we would have gotten sick anyway~ we already HAD the flu virus about to attack and it truly was coincidental! Also, with so many strains of flu, it isn't always definite that the flu the CDC THINKS will be out this year is the one that actually arrives. They do say that we might feel a bit achy following the shot; but the flu itself would not be a side effect. I wish we could get a flu shot BEFORE flu season starts; but I guess they have to see what's out there, etc. I am really not sure.

All that having been said, I 100% understand your reluctance to get one next year! LOL Though I don't think our oncologists want us to get the flu and IF the shots caused it, I am certain they wouldn't recommend it while we are in chemotherapy. But they do....so go figure!

Is this yet another can't win for losing scenario??? (((((((HUGS)))))

I know the flu shot didn't give me the flu, but, you have to admit..it was kind of coincidental? LOL

And yes, my oncologist wanted me to get it. My rads oncologist actually gave it to me. Are you getting the H1N1 flu shot Claudia? My oncologist didn't want me to.

I have been out of treamtent for YEARS...and am almost a year out of taking Arimidex as well. It hasn't occurred to me NOT to get the H1N1 ( notice how the abbreviation has made this flu go from Swine to HINEY flu???) LOL I think perhaps if/when the vaccine becomes available I will indeed ask my oncologist just to be on the safe side. I truly don't know if our immune systems remain forever compromised. I understand we can never be blood or organ donors post treatment, so again, I actually don't know what category I fall into as regards H1N1.

It's always something, isn't it?

Hugs,

Jeanne, I have heard that many who get it right after the shot contract it because they are in a hospital or other setting where there are people with the actual flu. So maybe you got it from someone in the waiting area.

I have been in the cancer center and the hospital so much lately for tests and doctor visits that I probably contracted it from someone there on some of my many visits. I hope none of you get it. It is awful! Thank goodness I am finally feeling better.

Whew (wiping hand across forehead!), I am so glad to see you post! Like so many others, my imagination went into overdrive also. Good thing we didn't start a post "so, what do you think happened?" about you! I am glad to hear that your post was with good news. Though sorry to hear about the flu (I have a thermonitor in my mouth as I type). I have been down also, but don't know if from surgery (body already weakened prior), the Tamoxifen, or I am getting the flu. With hotflashes.....how do you know if you have a fever? My biggest fear is vomiting and tearing all my internal abdominal stitches....ugghhh. So I am going to adapt your attitude and think positive!! Glad to see you back. Sending many cyber hugs. (OK, I think thermonitor is broke.....it says 96.2 degrees? I'm hot, not cold. Going to find another one that works!) Pammy

Jeanne, I am so sorry that my reply is late. I haven't been on the last several days. Our prayers were answered in the fact that your bone scan and mammo were clean. That is the best news! But, I am so sorry that you have to have a CAT scan now and possibly more surgery for those cysts. Try not to worry. Hopefully, it will be something simple and no cancer will ever be seen again and no more surgery. You have been thru enough! I will continue to pray that your tests will be benign and that NED will be dancing with you forever and ever! Just know that we all are praying for you!

I go tomorrow, the 28th, for a consultation with the surgeon about the cysts, to see what we need to do. They will have to be tested to see if they are cancerous or benign. So, I don't know if just a needle biopsy will work or if I will have to have surgery to remove them and test them. I should know tomorrow hopefully what route we will be going. Then, I go November 2nd, for the CAT scan to see what is going on with my back, abdomen and pelvic area. The bone scan showed no bone cancer, but, it showed something was going on. Then, I meet with my rads oncologist on November 9th, to discuss the CAT scan results. So, wait, wait, wait. I had hoped that after the bone scan, mammo and ultrasound that I would be done for awhile and be able to move past this bout with bc, but, apparently not. But, I will get thru this and I will be fine! I have way too much to live for!

Love, Jeanne ♥

P.S. I just want you all to know that your responses have truly overwhelmed me!

Jeanne, you just can't seem to catch a break. I am so sorry. Your bone scan was clean and that is excellent, but, I feel so sorry for you that you have to endure these other tests. I pray that they are benign and that NED will be with you. Please post as soon as you know anything and let us know. As you can see, we worry.

Hoping your surgeon recommended the simplest testing procedure today. (Would be nice to avoid surgery...)

No matter what, continued hopes that ALL future testing provides benign results.

Jeanne,
I know I have said it before, but it bears repeating. My prayers are that all of this has the bestest resolution ever and that NED gets into his western gear or tuxedo (depending on whether you are a square dancer or waltz) and knocks upon your door.

All of your good wishes, prayers and continued concern are so humbling to me. Thank you all so much! I just wanted to let you all know that I do go see my rads onocologist this Monday afternoon to get the results of my tests and to see what needs to be done. I am still praying for NED, as having bc twice now, is enough for me! I am ready to move on with my life and put bc far behind me. I had a terrible allergic reaction to the CAT scan Monday. I told them that I was allergic to mercury compounds, but, the tech said that was topical and that the iodine in the IV should NOT bother me. IT DID! I broke out in hives and could hardly breathe. They gave me benadryl right away and it stopped it and I felt better very quickly. So, that was exciting. LOL Anyway, just wanted to say hi and to thank each and everyone of you. I will hopefully be posting next week that I am "Dancing with NED"! That dude is being hard to catch, but, I will get him!

Love, Jeanne ♥

Not the kind of excitement that you needed. I did have a friend that also had that reaction. Fortunately they do keep stuff right there to counter it but still wish it hadn't happened. I will keep you in my prayers that Monday's news is good. Yes, I agree you have already had seconds so you are full thank you. Time to let you say excuse me and leave the cancer table. So my prayer is that is exactly what you get to do. Leave the cancer table and go to the dance floor and begin a nice Jive with good old NED. Maybe he is thinking that you are just playing hard to get. Tell him you're easy. Well, that sounds wrong. LOL
Thanks for the update.

I am so sorry that you had to go thru that. I haven't heard of that before. But, I would think that if you told them you were allergic to something similar that they would have questioned it. But, at least they had benadryl right there to help you.

I agree with Stef, you have had seconds on cancer and now you are full and time to leave the cancer table.

Praying to hear that NED has stopped playing hard to get and dances with you Jeanne. Please post Monday or Tuesday, at the latest, to let all of us know.

Thanks Jeanne for posting the update yesterday. We have all been worried since we hadn't seen you on the boards at all. That is horrible that you had a bad reaction to the CAT scan, but, your tech's reacted quickly thank God! We do miss you here and pray that tomorrow you will be dancing with NED my friend. I have to agree that Stef said it perfectly too. Stef, you do have a great way with words, always the right thing to say. So, post tomorrow night or Tuesday and let us know what you find out Jeanne.

That is one of the beauties of this board. Sometimes we are the caregivers, the advisors, the supporters and sometimes we need all of the above. We all have been on both sides of this fence, and even straddle it. We learn from each other and educate each other. And when we are overwhelmed (and we have all been there) we can ask for help and support and know that it will be given with love and genunine concern. Then when we have our strength back, we give to others. How wonderful is that!!
It's your turn to need the support and to be comforted so we are all here for you.
