I am in the stinkin` hospital because of a blood clot in my leg. What a JOY! Oh well, I didn`t have anything to do for the next few days anyway. I plan on harassing the nurses as much as possible. Can`t wait for that yummy hospital food. Eric ( : . ) |

Oh so sorry
Eric, I am so sorry. I had one and it was a stinking pain in the patootie. Yes, amuse yourself by harassing the nurses. They will probably give you coumadin, which is warfarin which is rat poison! They veeerrrryyyy reluctantly own up to it being the same thing, since they don't want their patients thinking that they are being given rat poison. But throw that out there and watch their faces.... Get better soon!

Heh Eric, sorry to hear you
Heh Eric, sorry to hear you are in the hospital. does chemo increase your chances of having a clot? Just curious... Guess you are getting heparin or lovenox, but I am thinking heparin IV... How did you know, alot of leg pain? Feel better...

Oh, Man :(
Hey, Eric
I had my computer crash and we put together a patch work solution and am just getting logged in...I wondered why I had not seen you around for a couple of days.
What a drag...sorry you had to go to the hopspital...you'll have to tell me how you found out about this and needed to go.
How long are you going to be in?
What hospital are you in?
Can I come by and see you? Let me know if you do, I don't want to impose and I know the hospital is not the first place we would like to say hello, but I wanted to support you if you want some company - would not stay long. You let me know.
Careful with those nurses...I've had a few that are plain right mean :(
PM me if you want me to stop by - I would need to know how to ask for you, what room etc.

I AM glad you caught it before it caused any problems and just pray you get better really soon.
Demand good food! LOL. The hospital where I had my cc surgery had really tasty food. Of course, I'd not eaten much for over 2 months so maybe.....

You poor thing. I feel so bad for you. How in the heck did you know you had a blood clot. I'm sure hoping that you do well with whatever they give you and please do as they say, but you are allowed to give the nurses the run for the money. I pray that you get very soon. Keep us posted on how you are coming along.

Thoughts and Prayers
Eric so very sorry to hear that you are in the hospital. Just consider it a stayvacation. You have your own personal room, catered meals, maid service, and constant interruptions for vitals. What more could you want?? Just kidding...hope you are doing good and will soon be out of the hospital and back at home. We will keep you in our thoughts and in our prayers. Try not to give the nurses too much trouble. Remember they have the needles.

As soon as I got into my room the nurse informed me that she beats her patients. I thought I was going to harass the nurses. It looks like the tables have turned and they have the advantage. I see bad comment cards in their future. Maybe a pulmonary embolism would be a better alternative.

Reply to Questions
Mommy - In answer to your question there are certain chemo drugs that do increase your chance of getting a blood clot. Just having cancer increases your chances. It`s just one of the many joys we have to endure.
Craig - I found out because I have had some leg pain but it got worse. The chemo had me down and I was going to sleep all day but the pain got me out of bed so I called the Doc who told me to go immediately to the er. I guess he knew what he was talking about. I live in Lewisville but chose to go to Baylor because Lewisville er does not have the best rep and I get my chemo treatments here.

The socks!
I had to comment, Patti! I had almost forgotten about those weird socks! The resection surgery was the first surgery of any kind i'd ever had. No one had warned me about those socks! When i was awakening from my anesthetic stupor, i remember thinking that my cat was at the foot of the bed kneeding my legs. I knew i was in the hospital, but it didn't seem too odd to me that my cat was there on the bed (i have three cats, but i was certain my male, Malachi, was there)! It actually took a long time before i realized it wasn't a cat, but compression socks. I can tell many a strange story about that first experience in the hospital. I'm almost entirely tolerant of verced, and remember all of my procedures where i wasn't completely knocked out, and the immediate awakening of the ones where i was knocked out. I saw the outline of pink elephants above my Mother's head, and many other whacked out things. Don't worry, i don't see them now!
Sorry Eric! I didn't mean to steal your post! But since you are in the hospital, and probably getting some of the best mind altering medications offered, perhaps you'll find my story a little amusing? You do have a wonderful attitude, and i admire that very much!
Get sprung soon!

Eric, I LOVE your attitude!!!!!
And, yes, harass those people!!! Actually, when I was in with one of my bowel obstructions, my first nurse was nasty, but the rest...well...I was moved to a private room (I complained about the smell of food that the other 'roomies' got when I could have nada-lol) and they came in and sat with me...watched TV, chatted, whatever...they were great....
Hope your stay is short, my beau has been on 'rat poison' for his heart for years....all you need to remember is that if you cut yourself, you will bleed 'like stink' (his words, not mine!).

Eric, i'm so sorry you have a blood clot! Was this caused by the erbitux? That stuff sounds so terribly nasty! I hope you don't have to endure it for much longer, either way.
I'm just glad they found the clot before any major damage was done, and i hope you're released before you have to eat too much of that hospital cardboard!

Eric,
Sorry you're in the hospital but I am glad that your doc was on it and knew to send you to the ER. I hope you can relax even though it is hard to do in the hospital. I hope you have some good music on your ipod or have a good book.
Take care.

Oh Eric
I'm so sorry. Well, first let me say I'm so happy you recognized the signs and got to the ER ASAP. My mom is Stage IV and I have warned her and written down the signs/symptoms for her. Hopefully she'll recognize them if it happens. That being said, as a nurse myself, I would recommend not harassing them, as someone said earlier they are the ones with the needles and the control over how quickly and well you get served with whatever you may need. That being said, with your sense of humor you could probably get away with anything. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. I'm heading out to church shortly and will mention you in the prayer request. It never hurts to have another prayer. Hope that clot dissolves quickly. Hope you can avoid the coumadin/warfarin if possible. Lovenox/Heparin better choices I think. Happy thoughts for your quick release. What a crappy way to spend the weekend!

Sorry to hear this Eric. I guess it's something they can fix through meds and not an operation? I was surprised that the food at Sloan was really good. They had a good variety but it would take 1 hour to get anything.
Hope you're out soon.

Thanks for all the support. I just got a call from Craig. He is about 20 miles from me and is coming to visit. So, I will be meeting the illustrious Craig in person. Too bad it`s in a hospital room. He can update you on the man behind the crazy texts. This group may never have anything to do with me again.

How's the food?
I know whenever I am in the hospital I anxiously lift the tray cover only to find that they can take bland to a new level. Be careful harrasing the nurses, they control that IV pump.
Hope your back home soon.

Make sure you get up and out of bed and walk as soon as possible, clear it with your Doc's first - but they should get you up once they have you no the blood thinner for a day or so. Reduces the risk of propagation of the clot or new clot development. And no, you do not want a PE, no matter what.
Am sure you'll do fine - keep the positive attitude.

Hello there
Hi Eric:
Saw your posting and thought I would say hi. From reading your message, I see that we have the same type of cancer with liver involvement. I've never had a blood clot, but they thought I did in the beginning. I have been living with cancer for about 2 and a half years. It sounds like you are in good spirits and dealing with this in a positive way. I think maintaining as good an attitude as possible helps a lot. BTW, I'm over in Louisiana, not too far away from you. I asked my doc about going to Baylor in Dallas for some trials. We'll see what works out. Wishing the best for you man. Take care, Roy.

I`m out
Craig is a freak. I am never text messaging or talking to him again. I`m kidding. Craig is as good a guy as he seems to be. I enjoyed the visit and hopefully there will be more. One of these days we may be able to go out like normal people and not meet at a hospital.

Eric,
Sooo, they let you out! Great! None of my nurses beat me, but I still have the "holes" left by a thousand needles from last March. Very glad that you are sprung and feeling better. Yeah, I hear ya. Meeting normal people is a kick once ina while. Not that I'm anywhere close to being normal myself!
Good news on your release! Keep up the thumb and the attitude!

The Skinny
Well we finally got to meet the other day. An impromptu meeting of the North Texas Semis; :)
And the skinny is - Eric is a good guy too. We got to talk about a good many things - Cancer and Life and football...and I can vouch for the hospital food too - Eric did not reach for it when it got there...can't blame him...I was tempted to see what was under the lid but thought better of it :)
More skinny - Eric has one terrific Mom - she's a sweetheart :) I told Eric he better keep her, or I'll take her for my own! Really very nice woman...we were going to leave but she said she was enjoying the visit so much that we just stayed - a heart as big as Texas and Eric, from talking to her, she has not had an easy life - I see in her future good times coming to the both of you - ya'll deserve it.
I brought Kim with me and she and his mom got along instantly and we talked and talked till it was time to go.
Life is an amazing thing when we open our hearts and our eyes to the possibilities and try and live our lives by doing the right thing. I was in a position to support Eric and by doing so, got to meet him and his wonderful mom...a really nice visit in a hospital...the door swung open and we all walked through and look what happened - AMAZING :)
The Board has been an incredible place to meet people in person and virtually - I'm constantly amazed by the love here and the sweet things that we do to help each other get through this thing. A world that just a few months ago, I did not know...oh what a difference a day makes, huh Gang?
So, all is well for Eric - he's all that AND a bag of chips.

I hope all is going well. Baylor is a great hospital. I think that would be great if it works out. I`m sorry you have been battling this beast for that length of time but I am glad you have managed to keep it at bay thus far. This is a great site for support and inspiration. Welcome to the group.

...I hate to hear you're in the hospital Eric, not a fun place to be with the poking and prodding, one place you can't get rest in, is the hospital! the nurses are there every hour doing something to you, but I hope you do try to get squeeze in some shut eye, without them waking you up all the time to check this or that.
I hope you feel better, and hope you get home soon!

Ways to Amuse Myself
Thanks for all the wonderful posts. I am still in the hospital wasting time on the computer, staring at the wall, and of course the clock. I am going to have to stir things up around here. I am going to start screaming obscenities every five minutes and talk about the people who are out to get me. I`m going to say that the voices in my head are telling me that the nurses are evil.

Blood Clots SUCK
I just got out of ICU (8 days) for a pulmonary embolism. It was so comforting (said sarcastically) when the ER Doctor told me how lucky I was because they typically only find pulmonary embolisms during autopsies! To all of you, listen to your pain, I could hardly roll over in bed and it was excruciating to cough so I waddled on over to my ER. I'm now on Fragmin for life (injection in the stomach of a blood thinner). Hang in there Eric, you'll be out before you know it and back to your own bed and a full nights sleep without a zillion nurse wake-up calls!
