Hip Pain

I had Versed a number of years ago for something altogether unrelated but do recall waking up a few times during the procedure and talking and being aware etc. In this case it was OK because not an immense amount of pain was involved. However for both of my BMB's they used Propofol and zip, zero, nada. It,in my opinion was miraculous. I felt nothing nor remember anything and the recovery time was less then an hour. I believe this was also used with both of my biopsies with the same result. So putting Michael Jackson aside,it is safe and effective when used by an anest
hesiologist. Mary
PS: This is called light sedation and is not General anesthesia.
I believe the versed is used when we have our port put in too. John0 -

Yes, you are so right Mary. I had a combination of Propofol and Versed for my port and was in and out and talking and watching the monitor during the procedure. You used the magic word though, Anesthesiologist. Most bmb are done in either the oncs office or as in my case out patient oncology, or cancer center, with only a chemo nurse and the onc present. And because of that the patients suffer.

Hi Maggie,
Just a note on Versed. I had versed and local numbing when I had my BMB and not only remember everything from it but also remember the PAIN! It was awful as the doctor who did the BMB, not my usual onc but his partner, refused to give me enough versed to knock me out. So be way careful as just because you get this drug doesn't mean it will be given correctly. I had versed with my abdominal biopsy and remember everything but didn't feel a thing. Never stopped talking during the entire procedure.
My first occurance I refused a BMB as treatment and outcome would be the same. On my recurrance I wanted to know. My big mistake. Never again without being put under.
Leslie
Dear Leslie,
Even though you received Versed, what a surprise to hear the pain you had during your BMB. Great info to find out, that sometimes not enough Versed is given. Is there anyway you can find out the dosage that was given to you for your abdominal biopsy? This info sounds easy enough to get from your chart. Another question, is Versed given throughout a procedure, or just one injection?
Still learning after one year on this board. Thanks Leslie

Hi Mary,
What great news, Propofol. I had Propofol when I had my colonscopy in June 2010. You are right, it is light sedation, not general anesthesia. Actually I was asleep for the whole procedure. It certainly felt like general anesthesia. Since I am more famaliar with Propofol, I will absolutely request it instead of Versed. In the event things change for me in the future. You would think the doctor would offer stronger sedation???

Maggie,
I had the versed and propofol when I had my colonoscopy too. It knocked me out very quick and I do not remember a thing. Even after I woke up things were a blur. Never woke up during the proceedure and I had 2 of them. John (FNHL-1-4A-5/10)0 -

Hi Maggie,
Yes I do know what dosage was given as before the procedure I asked. Turns out it was lower than I had had for other procedures. And yes they can give more at any time. The onc started out with one and than gave me a second injection during the bmb.
Propothel is great, just keep in mind that if there is not a gas passer present they will not give it to you.
Just hope that both you and I never have to do the bmb again. That goes for all of us here, once is more than enough without the proper pain relief.

Hey Maggie & John,
Nothing dirty or inappropriate. A gas passer is an Anesthesialogist. I believe the expression dates back to when doctors used gas to put patients out. I actually had gas when I had my son back in the olden days when moms were put out to give birth.

Leslie,
I can't remember if it was you or who,but I have been reading about certain vitamins on here for the hip pain. I have been taking the Vitamin D3 and iron since reading it on here . It hasn't been that long, but I can actually feel a difference. I can walk a bit farther without my left hip hurting. It does start to hurt after a while but I can walk maybe 50 yards farther before having to stop and rest ny hip. I have only been taking it for maybe a week so I do not expect any miracles. I am not usually a vitamin and mineral person, but something is helping. I also notice a little more energy, maybe from the iron. Again nothing to write home about but there is a little difference. Hi John,
I am so glad you have been able to walk a bit further since starting Vitamin D3. Also the iron supplement. When I found out I was low on iron, I was so surprised. I never felt tired or weak.
You say you were never a vitamin or mineral person. Neither was I. My doctor did tell me to add vitamin D3, and iron. I just added a multi vitamin with minerals, 100 mg vitamin B6, and 1200 mg fish oil daily. Many Years ago I developed Carpal Tunnel in my wrist. No idea right or left wrist? The pain was horrible. I did wear the wrist band which did help, but not completely. Anyway, a friend mentioned to me about taking Vitamin B6. I started taking 100mg B6 in the morning, and 100mg B6 in the evening. The vitamin reduced the swelling, and I never had to have surgery. To this day the Carpal Tunnel never returned.
I am not a doctor. I do the best I can. My oncologist is aware of the vitamins I am taking, and she is not concerned.
Glad you are feeling better. Maggie DX 09/09 extranodal marginal zone B cell NHL remission Jan 20110 -

Bluerose,
I think we all need a break once in a while and get all the laughs we can. Its all in fun, because what we are dealing with certainly is no fun. We can all be serious are heck when we have too. Whenever a little laugh can be slipped in there is probably a welcomed sight. We have all been through a lot with the treatments, the waiting and watching the tiredness and anything else you can think of. A little humor may help us all get thru this. We will get thru it all one way or the other. Thank You for your comment. John(FNHL-1-4A-5/10) REMISSION-Oct.15,20100
