Hip Pain
Hey John maybe your just getting old!! Just kidding. Your talking to someone who in 2006 had a double hip replacement. I will never forget the level of pain I experienced before the surgery and upon waking from surgery no pain at all. Unbelievable as until the operation I lived with pain at a level of 7 to 8 for one year. Check with your doctor, hip xrays would be in order. You could be experiencing a problem from the steroids.

Upper thighs
Hi John,
I have thigh pain most of the time. My hips only hurt when I sit for long lengths of time and then go to stand up from the chair. They feel stiff/numb but if I walk around for a few minutes they seem to loosen up. I have to go downstairs to the laundry room and I knowtice after about 5 to 10 ten minutes of standing folding clothes out of the dryer that my thighs will tighten up and sometimes quiver in the muscles. I asked my doctor about it at my last appointment and he said it was caused from the cyclophosphimide and vincristine combination of our chemo. So..I guess it's something we will just have to deal with.

Sue,
Yea, if I keep walking, which isn't far my upper thigh start to ache. I am sure it could be from the chemo. It would not surprise me. Makes me wonder if it will reverse itself. With my luck I already know the answer to that. JohnFNHL-1-4A-5/10)0 -

Hi John,
I too, suffer from hip pain and upper thigh pain. I have been having problems with my right knee, but never my right hip and right thigh. It seems this problem started almost right after my bone marrow biopsy. On my last visit to the doctor, I asked the nurse, and she said no. I should of asked the oncologist. The pet scan I had in the end of Dec 2010 stated the following: "There is mild patchy FDG around the right hip where there is severe fibrocystic changes in the femoral head and posterior column of the acetabulum likely due to degenerative changes."
I used to walk miles. I no longer can walk more than 4 blocks before suffering pain and tiredness. Even though I hate pills, if I have something special to do, I will take 2 tablets of Aleve. It really helps. I only take this medicine once a week.
Do you think this condition might of started after our bone biopsy?

My left hip was hurting but mine started in the left butt cheek. Turned out to be insufficiency fracture from where my rads weakened the bone. Can't imagine chemo did it any good either. Just hurt to do everything, walk, cough, move, you know....just when you need it lol. Mine got better after about 4 months or so
Hope you feel better soon John0 -

Hi Leslie,
Hopefully you read my reply to John. In Sept 2009, my small bowel perforated. I had an operation to resect, and was in the hospital for 3 weeks. A nightmare. As you can read, my pet scan was pretty bad concerning my right hip. I have no idea if evenually I will have to have a hip replacement. I have no desire to do so. I am so scared to be in the hospital. I also have a low tolerence for pain. Is it very painful to have a hip replacement? What about PT after? Is that painful also?
Thanks Love Maggie DX 09/09 extranodal marginal zone b cell NHL remission Jan 20110 -

Dear John,
I will definitely ask the oncologist in May 2011 if problems might of started after BMB. So long to wait for info. If you find out sooner than me, please post your response. I wonder if our injury from the BMB is reversible over time??

I was wondering the same thing. Theres always the possibility of it becoming chronic too.The bone was invaded as we know. I have heard once a bone is broken or even cracked the chances for arthritis in that bone increases several times over time. My oldest son broke his arm when he was just a little fellow. He is now 31 and has aches in that bone in the cold weather. John(FNHL-1-4A-5/10)0 -

I have hip and thigh pain also. The Dr.moved my leg in all kinds of positions and it felt better for about 4 weeks. Everytime I go shopping for 5 hours it kills:) I know the solution for that:) He said to have an ex ray but haven't yet. The hot shower , and my trusty heating pad help. I haven't been to the gym since Sept . But I will ,I will make it back next week. Hopefully I will be able to walk when I leave there. Love to all0 -

I don't know about the rest of you, but my experience with the BMB was absolutely awful! My doctor I had at that time didn't give me anything except a surface numbing agent Lydicane(SP) and once the tool she was using to extract the marrow went into the bone and she started screwing it around, tugging and pulling...I literally thought I was going to pass out from the pain and noise! Then, when she pulled the tool out she didn't have enough marrow and had to go in again a little higher up on my hip. Some of you may remember me telling that awful story back in late July. Anyways...I would almost bet you thats why my left leg, thigh and hip gives me so much trouble now, but I seriously doubt I could EVER get my clinic/new doctor to admit they did anything wrong. I've made it CRYSTAL clear with my new doctor that under no circumstances will I EVER have another BMB done unless I'm put completely under...no way NO how!!! Every time my left hip aches or feels weak, I think of that day having the BMB! Really Pi$$es me off. Theres no reason we should EVER have to experience an ordeal like that with all of the different kinds of pain medications available for use.

Sue,
I remember it well. I think I was telling you just about the same experience for me. I did not know what to expect either. I got the lydocaine as well. I never saw the biopsy needle and no idea what it looked like. I remember the twisting and turning and some crunching. When he took the needle out he pulled and yanked every which way but loose. It actually scared me more than hurt. I kept thinking what if this thing breaks off in my hip. After he was done I had a bandage placed on the area and told to lie still. I stared to feel very weak and think I may have even passed out. I remember people talking to me,but not what they were saying. My blood pressure dropped to 66/38. That is very dangerous. Gradually it started to come back up to 110/70. I did not realize how thick the biopsy needle was. It was done in my left hip and guess what, thats where my pain is today. HMMMMM!!! I hear ya John...well, it's not "rocket science" to me when I relate the hip, leg, thigh pain to the BMB. Never had the problem BEFORE the BMB...so if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...ya know? Oh well, the damage is done...now all we can do is hope it's a temporay thing and not permanent. Me and Steve were just having this conversation last night when I was complaining about my left hip acheing while sitting watching a movie on the t.v. I had to get up and stretch my leg two or three times during the movie to get some relief...sooo irritating! Sue (FNHL-2-3A-6/1000 -

And to anyone due to have a BMB,
After reading all the responses, I am quite sure the pain in my hip and upper thigh is due to the bone marrow biopsy.
A few months back someone posted information about medication they received for their BMB. At that time I had no idea what was in store for me in the future. Perhaps another BMB, or a spinal tap???? I added this info to my files on my computer. Here it is:
MAKE sure with bone marrow biopsies you have Vercet given - you have no memory or pain -
Since I was DX in Sept 09, I have found out so many acquaintances that I run across from day to day have their own stories. Some made it quite clear, under no circumstances would they have a procedure that is quite painful without being put under, or at least receiving strong medication. I found out this info after I had my BMB.

Hi Maggie,
Just a note on Versed. I had versed and local numbing when I had my BMB and not only remember everything from it but also remember the PAIN! It was awful as the doctor who did the BMB, not my usual onc but his partner, refused to give me enough versed to knock me out. So be way careful as just because you get this drug doesn't mean it will be given correctly. I had versed with my abdominal biopsy and remember everything but didn't feel a thing. Never stopped talking during the entire procedure.
My first occurance I refused a BMB as treatment and outcome would be the same. On my recurrance I wanted to know. My big mistake. Never again without being put under.

HI All,
I think you guys may just be on to something. Don't think the bmb did anything good for my left hip. Your so right Sue and John, it does give me more problems than before the procedure. Bet if we asked our doctors they would say that there is no connection.

Leslie,
You know they would never take the blame. A lot of times I keep quiet about things that I know goes on behind closed doors because I don't know how other people feel about things. It certainly appears everyone on here are probably thinking the same way as me in a lot of things that go on in the world. We can talk about it,but as we all know nothing gets done about it anymore. There is definitely a connection with the pain in our hips and the BMB. If they would admit it then there would be a lot of paperwork involved and then the insurance companies would have to get involved. Its so much easier to just say its all in our heads and let us suffer. Hey,it all comes down to the money that can be saved. It took over 50 years before they would admit asbestoes is harmful to the lungs. They even still say or at least some that cigarettes do not help cause cancer. It all depends on which side of the fence you are on. John(FNHL-1-4A-5/10)0 -

I had Versed a number of years ago for something altogether unrelated but do recall waking up a few times during the procedure and talking and being aware etc. In this case it was OK because not an immense amount of pain was involved. However for both of my BMB's they used Propofol and zip, zero, nada. It,in my opinion was miraculous. I felt nothing nor remember anything and the recovery time was less then an hour. I believe this was also used with both of my biopsies with the same result. So putting Michael Jackson aside,it is safe and effective when used by an anest
hesiologist. Mary
PS: This is called light sedation and is not General anesthesia.0
