naturopath battles, take care
Met a naturopath in a vitamin shop and had an hour long consult about 10 days ago.
she recommended about $300 of extras on top of current supplements. I was kind of convinced but also suspicious. finding a really good cancer focused naturopath was in my dreams.
So spoke with the answer to my dreams last night.
This lady has been a naturopath for 27 years.
She lectures in naturopathy at college.
I cannot get in to see her for 4 weeks but am emailing my list of supplements, medication and diet and will get her detailed feedback asap.
She is a nutricionist.
She is a bowel cancer survivor.
She works for bowel cancer australia and provides phone support.
She is well known and will take me on as a patient. Maybe good calma works faster than I thought. I helped bowel cancer australia a little and now its coming back to me.
She will see me privately as I don't want the official bowel cancer Australia approved therapies, I prefer more cutting edge. I don't want a triple blind trial supported approach. I would rather hear her state what she believes is best for me.
Well here is the shock. Get off most of the things the first naturopath recommended 10 days ago while your on folfox.
she said I have enough anti oxidants floating around from my juices and also backed up on onc about juice diarrhea link. she also reconfirmed slippery elm. But with advice to have it away from other supplements and pills and before food and take my probiotic supplement 3 times a day.
I was impressed just by this quick 15 minute chat by phone.
I am not surprised by the difference of opinions, I am glad, a little tension between complementary specialists is good. I will get the bottom of this with patience and good advice.
Today was a great day, got kids to school early, did 2 hours walking with friends, attended cancer support group for 90 minutes with great meditation and palliative care talk, then visited another friend Phil in hospital who had his rectal cancer out 9 days ago, picked up kids and took kids to the doctor, we all went to swimming lesson and I got in 18 laps and went out for diner with family friends kids birthday party at sizzler. The kids and I crashed.
A very busy productive day. I fell asleep while the kids were at the doctors. So I had a little break.
Make sure you get good advice re supplements, its better to be safe than sorry.
Take care everyone,
Pete

Good for you for sticking with finding good complementary care
I also pay attention to the schooling, the schools, and the experience, and outlook of my complementary team, as well as for my western medicine team. Now, most times they all agree, and with my research, which I find a good sign.

hi graci,
i do have some problems but thank god for my blessings and friends.
my onc would rather i did not do tcm, i insisted. so the compromise is no tcm on infusion days. even my tcm onc was happy with this.
one of my friends here has also had bad issues with oxi, i have recommended my TCM guy to them and even given her my big $100 tcm book read. but she is not doing tcm which is completely her call and i would not dream of pressuring her about it again.
I have pretty serious diarrhea issues most cycles which I take seriously because all the nutrients i try to eat and drink by food, juices or supplements just get washed up into the bag and not my body. i have take so much coiedene and gastrow stop to manage this. and i hate taking all this extra medication but i know i have to hit the diarrhea immediately and effectively or else i will end up back in ER or worse. my chemo dose was going to be lowered if my diarrhea could not be managed. i am getting worse pins and needles and numbness in my feet, its just started after the 7th oxi cycle. it does worry me a little.
alot of my complimentary therapies are more to do with personal belief with rock solid science. i read the science and evidence but am often more convinced by the practicianer and personal referals for people i trust.
my key point was that first naturopath recommended supplements not good for oxaliplatin and folfox according to the second naturopath.
i have more confidence in the second naturopath, as i know her background, where she is employed and her experience. and she is not affiliated with a vitamin shop.
i am still committed to my tcm and have my teas.
all my supplements i picked up, a bit here, a bit there. i have been looking for someone to give guidance about my specific needs and symptoms. now i have found her.
the advice includes the best times of day to take supplements before or after meals, morning lunch or dinner time.
i see some overlap between and potential conflict between tcm and naturopath and i will ask them to work together. at this point i will give tcm priority unless can be convinced otherwise.
my tcm does not know about vitamin d3 and what capsules to take. i am still on 5000 ui daily 3 in the morning and 2 at night.
Your FDA and Insurance are similar to mine. none of the tcm or supplements are covered.
My doctors are as conservative as yours, sometimes you guys get the trials first.
I would probably have the same faith in tcm and vitamin for my long term well being and juicing.
I just like to share my journey, if it helps anyone then great.
cheers,

Hi Pete,
It is interesting how different naturopaths recommend different supplements and different advice, isn't it? But I guess that's to be expected, since regular oncologists also differ in their advice too.
You are on a lot of supplements! I was taking many supplements before just on my own, which is another reason why I finally sought out a naturopath for advice on it all. Currently, today is day 6 of my 8 day cleanse, under the advice of the naturopath. He wanted me to get everything out of my system first and then test for allergies and sensitivities before recommending any supplements. I will see him next week on Wednesday, a week from today. It will be interesting to see what he recommends. I've heard from some people who have asked why I'm doing a cleanse while I'm on chemo and why I don't wait with the supplements until "after chemo". I guess that would be best for most people, but my situation right now is that I'm not expected to have an "after chemo"- I'm on the lifelong chemo plan, as the nasty stuff just isn't going away. So, for me to follow that advice would mean I'd never get to do it! So my naturopath said it could actually help my chemo work better by flushing all the other crud out of my system, even allowing my liver to do a better job afterwards by flushing it now. I sure hope he's right and that I haven't compromised the chemo but, hey, like I said- it hasn't gotten rid of the cancer (but has been holding it back), so my thoughts are why not try something else. The natural approach seems to make so much sense to me. I love the idea naturopaths have of trying to get to the root of the problem compared to just reacting to the problem. I'm working with him not only for my cancer, but whole body, which for me also includes lots of allergies (severe congestion and breathing problems on a daily basis for many years now & also digestion problems). If I can even just get help with being able to breathe better and not having digestive problems, I'd be thrilled!
I'll check in with you again after my next appt and compare notes more then.
Best wishes to you,

hi lisa,
I do so hope your naturopath can do some magic for you. thats my prayer anyway. I was just really pissed that I got two very divegent opinions from the naturopath basically forcing me to play the pick the favourite game. which I hate, but will do ruthlessly if required.
I like the idea of your cleanse and tests and I hope my naturopath suggests it as well, I will ask if she does not.
Funny the first day I found out about my cancer I got my multivitamin going and have then added to it along the way. they were in place before chemo, so my onc seemed to accept them ok.
Lets compare notes. Its just a hunch but I believe you will be thrilled by better health.
best wishes to you as well,

I am looking in to taking Jim to Cancer Treatment Centers of America because they have naturapaths on staff as well as nutritionists etc.. so they work with the oncologists and surgeons. I am just gettting the info on it now and looking for advise. Marie said to check the fine print on what insurance does and does not pay for. But I think I'd rather be where a natuapath and oncologist are actually working together on what he should or should not take. I don't have a clue. It actually overwhelms me. I'll let you know what I find out.

hi april,
to be honest me too.
i would rather be a dad than a pharmactist, a biochemist, a naturopath or an onc but i can only have faith in my practicioner when i have done due diligence. that's often reading, posting here and 2nd and 3rd opinions. everyday i learn and see how our cancer treatment and survival could be improved, its good for me but i feel saddened that so many everywhere get less than they should have. all our systems have so much room for improvement.
i would love to know whats advised. i am going to start pushing my hospital system
re naturopaths working with onc and about what is really world best practice for cancer centers.
thats what i love about the international scope of this board.
goodluck with jim. could you ask them about the vitamin d3 and reoccurence prevention.
this has to be the biggest single prevention thing i have read about. would be interested in cancer treatment centers of america's opinion.
i will post when or i have some good naturopath news.
all best very,
pete0
