What else can you do to improve your chances ? Please read.
In my continual search for information, I found this paper (on this link below) and think it is one of the better and more succinct articles I have found to discuss the use of 'Complimentary Therapies' along with the conventional Surgery, Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy. It is based on clinical trials done in Cancer centres in the USA ++
The interesting parts for me were the role Supplments can play to improve the effectiveness of many Chemotherapy treatments, reduce the toxicity to the body, accelerate recovery, increase quality of life and increase percentages for complete recovery.
Obviously this should be of interest to all of us.
Please enjoy and consider taking the fight one step further.

Help with Low White Blood Cell Count
Just had a recent blood test and my WBC count has not improved in 8 months since treatment ended. I found a product called Resist http://www.aworldofgoodhealth.com/resist30.htm#benefits, but can't seem to find a supplier on the web. I'm eating my veggies but seem to be stuck in the low 3k range. Years prior to being diagnosed I was in the 5K range.
Your suggestions.....Please
Thanks

HI Ed,
Many of us have had the same problem as a result most likely from the Rads and Chemo.
As sited in many places, the best supplements to take are B12 and Folic Acid (Folates) and also Vit E and at least a good Multi-Vitamin.
Taking a full range of supplements will help to get all systems running and in concert makes it easier for the body to do it's thing and help lead us to a full recovery.
The 'Resist' formula look great. I haven't checked but you might try iherb.com for a supply ??
Cheers

I read over the article mentioned. Wonder if it would be beneficial to begin these vitamins prior to treatment? Looks like it could only help.
Any ideas?

Hi Andrea,
It is a bit like preparing for a marathon, if you are in good shape before you start, the better your result should be. Having the body working well and the immune system running on all cylinders all contribute to a better outcome.
It is advisable to use a qualified person to set dosages and allow for any pre-existing conditions, age, and general health. I don't think there is such a thing as starting too soon.

Don't you think that people that are going to do any type of holistic medicine should discuss with their doctors first. You have put some pretty radical information on her about the China Study etc. Did you clear all that with your doctor? I'm going to ask my doctor about the China Study as it was a study done by researchers at Oxford/Cornell universities and my doctor gradutated from Cornell. If the China Study is accurate it can cure many diseases including cancer. What did you doctor say about it or did you get any professional opinion about it? Just curious. Thanks Shelly0 -

Shelly,
I know you were not addressing me with your question, but I thought I would chime in anyway. I finished rad in November for tonsil Stage 3 C with surgery to remove tonsil and lymp nodes in August. I see a holistic doct, now and and started seeing him after my diagnosis. With his recomendation, I took about 5 Vitaim C IV prior to surgery. He suggest I take a "Mistletoe" supplement by injection every week during rad. I did speak to the RO prior about my supplments I was taking and even gave him information about the Mistletoe injections that the holistic doctor gave me. Not surprised, the RO said NO to all supplments and the injections. I even suggested he speak to my holistic doctor (which by the way the holistic doctor was in agreement to discuss if the RO was willing). He said no, was not interested in talking to him either. I even ask the Doctor if he had read the China study, he said no, and he was not interested. Funny thing is, he is a cancer survivor himself. He is old school, as most of the oncologist are. Not interested in improving things. Well after treatment was over, I am back to seeing the holestic doctor. I am taking the Vitiam C IV weekly along with many supplments, yoga exercise and prayer regulary. No guarantees, but I feel much better with the regiment from the holistic doctor than I did with the radiation and all the side effects I am having from that.
Just some information to process and think about.

I'm not against holistic at all, but was wondering what other's doc's think. I am skeptical of the China study as I have read other books claiming the same types of things. Atkins for one said that it's diet got rid of heart disease. I was just thinking because my own doc graduated from Cornell he might have heard of it. I just don't trust anyone, I think is my problem. How do you know your holistic guy is right and how do you know your doc isn't? There is just so much garbage out there who do we beleive. What are the holistic guys credentials other than what they tell you? The China study was saying they don't believe supplements don't reduce the risk of cancer? So why take them? I'm confused and I don't know who to believe anymore.0 -

Shelly,
There is a lot of things out there, and there is snake oil also out there. I can only suggest you keep searching til you find what is right for you. In my case my holestic doctor is also a medical doctor. He has been very fortunate to practice medicine all over the world. I dont think by any means that the holistic path is the only way, and my holistic doctor would agree as well, but I also feel the same way about about mainstream medicine. I do think there is better things than rad and chemo. Unfortunally, as long as the drug mfg are top dog, nothing will change in mainstream medicine. If I could tell you what would work for you, beleive me, I would tell you and the rest of the world. I dont know what the answers are. However evidence would show our diet creats a lot of issues. Good luck with your recovery. I hope for you the very best. Debbie0 -

HI Shelly,
I understand your skepticism and confusion. I have followed holistic healing for over 30 years and I now 'cherry pick' my treatments from all methods of medicine, both conventional and alternative. Do my Doctors know best ? Definitely not always - and by a long stretch. They know about 'their' methods, but that is usually the full extent of their knowledge. Doctors bury 20,000 medical mistakes every year in the US alone Shelly.
As for the China Study, firstly, it is a not a book about cures or treatment, it a book about nutrition and the outcomes as will manifest as our heath and well-being. He has done a very expensive study to show that diet is a major factor affecting our health. As we all know, other factors of environment, genetics also play a role, but diet is clearly a major contributor.
If you have a healthy diet, you are stacking the deck in your favor for you health, and more importantly for me -recovery and disease prevention (recurrence). When I say healthy diet, I mean that as outline in the China study NOT what many people consider to be healthy - which in many cases is just a 'Not quite as bad version of the SAD' (Standard American Diet). The SAD is a shocker !
Did I ask my Doctors about the China Study ? Absolutely. What they say ? They all scoffed but also, NONE of them had read the book. So I bought 3 copies and got an agreement from them to read the books. I confronted my Oncologist (Chemo Ali) about the book and in particular the fact that most hospital supplied Nutritional supplements contain a high level of Casein (Milk protein) which is shown 100% to progress Cancer. He became embarrassed, mumbled. shrugged pathetically and then tried to change the subject. He does however now tell me nutrition is very important, especially vegetables. A far cry from the guy who tried to pump me full of Ensure and Ice Cream 15 months ago..
Shelly, the bottom line is Doctors do NOT study nutrition. Unfortunately, many are too arrogant and ignorant to admit they know little or nothing about it, yet they maintain the almighty power to tell you what is good and what is bad. They study anatomy, pathology pharmacology and surgery so that is what they know. Anything else is an encroachment. I have dealt with and watched this battle for many years. it is changing - but very slowly.
Natural Medicine generally studies the cause of disease and aims to treat from that perspective i.e. the cause. If fatty meats, processed foods, and excessive sugar intake can lead to heart disease, cancer and diabetes should we take pills, chemo and radiation to treat the symptoms and problems OR stopping ingesting the major cause ??
If you read enough, and have contact with many people in the health industry (both sides), you will establish your own baseline, and feel comfortable with your decisions, but never stop learning. There are many people on this site who now subscribe to Natural therapies and also like me use a combination (Complimentary therapy) and most with very positive outcomes. The majority of these posts on CSN are not about the effect of Cancer, but about what the treatments have done to us. That is the price we pay for taking this path.
I am not saying don't go with conventional treatment, but I always suggest people take a complimentary approach to 1. Improve chances of survival, 2. Increase efficacy of treatments, 3, Reduce side and ongoing effects from treatment 4. Reduce chances or a recurrence and lastly 5. Improve their health for a better life after this horrible journey.
I have more on my BLOG and Expressions pages if you wish to delve further, but I am glad you raised this point as there are many out there in exactly the same position as you so good on you for asking questions.
Sadly, the FDA and Pharmaceutical Companies rule and influence the medical profession far beyond what most people realize. I suggest you read the China Study from cover to cover and then make your choices about your diet and lifestyle. You have nothing to lose, and everything gain.
The one thing you will have to come to terms with Shelly, is your Doctors do NOT always know best (often they just don't know period) and that you may have to work against their recommendations. My approach now is I ask my Doctors for their opinion/advice as opposed to them telling me what to do. There is a big difference.
All the best and thanks again for your post.

Here's another reason I'm skeptical. The China Study was written for Dr. Campbell to make money, he didn't do it for free. Also how do you know he's legit? Did you research his background or call the universities to make sure of his studies. I'm not saying this to be difficult, I just don't trust anyone, ever. I trusted my doctor in 2007 that what I had under my tongue was a blocked salivary gland. Also two separate doc's in 2009, both wrong. How do we know? They can tell us anything they want. Also how do you know that milk grows cancer? Because of the China study or is that a commmonly known thing? I will get the China Study and read it. I will also ask my current onco about it, as I said he went to Cornell maybe he's heard of it? I really want to know because if this book is right, there is a whole lot I've been doing wrong, including to my children.0 -
