Researchers have recently reported that the severe diarrhea that often results from Irinotecan and may result in a lowering of its dosage or stopping its use, might be mitigated by 4 out of 10,000 compounds they screened (with explanation of how diarrhea is caused here)......rsc.org/chemistryworldNews/2010/November/04111003.asp

tho this will only be of use two or so years from now, next article is perhaps of more immediate usefulness:

Austrailian researchers have found that pyridoxine protects against Oxi- induced neurotoxicity, as per Oncology update, dated 11/5 , more effectively than calcium/magnesium infusions

    Thanks Steve
I hope they come up with a drug to use for this soon. Unfortunately I've now learned first-hand about the nasty BIG D from Irinotecan...

    thanks and individual perspective
Thanks for posting this -- very interesting.

I'm on Irinotecan (CPT-11) now. I had severe diarrhea. Well, maybe moderate. For several cycles, I had severe diarrhea once or twice per cycle requiring immodium "blasts" (6-12 in a 12 hr period). That was OK....Do-able. But after one fairly intense bout my onc decided to reduce my dose by 20% for one cycle. No diarrhea. Then he put me back on the old dosage -- and I haven't had severe diarrhea (requiring anything) since. ???? Weird? Can't be psychosomatic, can it???? I have very slightly changed my diet, perhaps (from TONS of green veggies to LOTSA green veggies....I still eat fruit esp fresh berries every day). Anyway -- just sharing an interesting personal experience.

    Thanks again for the articles/references.

    Tara
