but those "insertable" glycerine thingies sure worked good for me. And took about 10 minutes max. I"m now taking Juice Plus + tablets every morning and they work amazing! Gross subject but I bet everyone on here has had this problem at least once.0 -

Sorry you're having this problem, I did too. I went from that to the opposite almost on a daily basis.
Try Miralax also, it's a gentle laxative.

I had this problem really
I had this problem really bad at the beginning of my chemo treatments, and because Ive been on painkillers pretty much the entire time that I've been on chemo. I was taking Colace every day but that wastn't taking care of the problem, then when i would take laxatives instead i would have horrible cramping & an afternoon of running to the bathroom.
I talked to my Onc about it & he suggested taking Senokot S. It is a laxative PLUS stool softener in one, and it works for me! You can take 2 at a time, up to twice a day. I take 2 a day & have no more issues with constipation.
Wishing you the best, and hope that you get relief. I know how miserable that can be.
*hugs*

constipation
I always used a stool softener the day of chemo when I got home. It took a few hours but by the next day it always...(cleaned me out), LOL. I ate yogurt and lots of fruit. Also ate a lot of farina. That always worked for me too. I know it's hard but it will get easier.
Lots of luck

POWER PUDDING!
Power Pudding Recipe with 3 main ingredients
•1 cup applesauce
•3/4 cup prune juice
•1 cup All-bran cereal
Mix together in a small storage container the applesauce, prune juice and All- bran until it resembles thick pancake batter or pudding. Take one tablespoon in the morning followed by a full glass of water. Drink some water throughout the day.
You can repeat the dosage in the afternoon if you don't have relief. Be sure to drink plenty of water! It should last about a week in the fridge~ it is easy to make more as needed. It worked wonders for me when I had vicodin induced constipation ...I wish I had known of it during chemo! Good luck to you! If you decide to try this, don't eat too much at one time, as it can cause bloating due to so much fibre being introduced at one time! I have heard that this "pudding" is used a lot in nursing hones..you can always check with your oncologist and get his blessing before trying this. But ...it's just regular food~ and it doesn't even taste half bad, one tablespoon at a time! LOL

Chen -i also had the constipation really bad when I was on vicodin - my Onc has since switched me to percocet & I was surprised that I no longer have the constipation problem. I thought all narcotic painkillers caused constipation.
Good luck to you all with the power pudding - I am the self-proclaimed world's pickiest eater & shudder at the thought of anything with applesauce & prune juice in it - I will tell mom about it though, sounds like she'd really like it!
*hugs*

That sounds awesome (seriously)--everything they taught us to try first in Constipation 101 in nursing school. The drinking the water part is very important if you take fiber--otherwise you end up with large dry stools--yikes. And you might have a cup of coffee or tea with it as both are bowel stimulants.
And, not to get too technical, timing is important. Success is most likely about 20 min after a meal as the large intestines often have mass movements then (I am not making this s**t up..lol).
I sometimes take the metamucil fiber capsules--you have to swallow 6 of the wretched things with a large glass of water. They don't work fast, but, usually the next day, job done.
Oh and an ear of corn for dinner helps me out the next day. Cherries can also help. Lemonade too.
I can't tolerate colace, senokot, etc--bad cramps, nausea. Haven't tried miralax which I hear is gentler.
Hope some of this helps!0 -

Well, with just having to take a tablespoon at a time, maybe you can pretend you are testing the Spice Cake batter...it does kinda taste like that! Really! You could probably sprinkle cinnamon on it for good measure! LOL0 -

My sister broke her ankle in 3 places 4 months ago and was prescribed lots of vicodin..the Power Pudding worked for her too. Thanks for adding the important tips on when the best time to take it may be, and other "power foods"! If this works for all of us, no one will be able to say we're fulla S***!!! And that's worth something! :-)0 -

Miralax and dulcolax. When I was on pain meds I took a ducolax a day to help prevent the dreaded constipation. When it did back up I used miralax. best of luck in a very uncomfortable situtation.0 -
