More comments from the inane and idiotic
From my mother-in-law, at Sunday dinner (prepared by me) at my house: "Are you done yet?" ... "Are you done?" ... "Are you done yet?" ... "Done yet?" ... "Done?"
Me: "No. Are you?"
At the club: "But you didn't get all wrinkly."
Me: "?"
Also at the club: "I know three other people who had cancer, and they are all still fat."
Me: "Well, maybe they didn't get THIRTY-EIGHT doses of radiation to the THROAT."
Again with the club: "Gained any weight back yet?"
Me: "Maybe when I start eating solid foods."
Bless all their little hearts. They do mean well. So, share any good ones you've heard.

Easy Does It (Or Doesn't Do It)
"Maybe you shouldn't do that. You don't want to overdo it. That cancer treatment really weakens your body. You don't want to do anything to set back your recovery. The treatment is hard on your body. You need to take things slow and easy." What I WANTED to say is "I never knew that cancer treatment is hard on you. Maybe it doesn't weaken your body. In fact, what if cancer treatment is like a spa day many days in a row - I can do anything now, I can do things I couldn't do before". How on earth can we make progress if we spend all our time making sure we don't try to do more today than last week?0 -

I am not sure they mean well..Ms Wrinkly should meet up with the woman who thinks Cancer is a punishment from God..Some people are just personifications of cancer. And no amount of rads will help them..

I have had some odd comments..
Work is great, being in a hospital, get lots of appropriate comments..blood counts, etc etc, but the other day at costco the cashier asked me if I had been starving myself.
I do have a hard time with some of the comments others have shared, they seem so mean.

No hair, coloring looked off, lost a lot of weight...and they still didn't know you were sick - LOL. Somehow that's almost scary that a person you work with everyday is so unobservant.
After completing treatment I stopped by to visit some of my co-workers and one man came up to me and said "I'm so happy to see you, I thought you had died." I just smiled and said "Nope, I just look like I did."
Sometimes you just have to smile and consider the source.

What a concept! Cancer treatment as a Spa Day! I must say, I haven't had a single pesky chin hair or moustache hair since I finished my 38 radiation treatments. Spa treatments should be that effective! Maybe we're all on to something.
It does make the skin as smooth and soft as a baby's bottom. After all the THIRD DEGREE RADIATION BURNS heal up, that is.

Your face doesn't look as stiff anymore! I get that alot! You gained weight! Hubby was over feeding me via tube!I think I was the only one on treatment that gained. The best one is what stage were you. I answer stage 4 B. They say you should be dead! I love that one.0 -

Mine is more about no words. Yep 23 years with one company. 13 years into new normal and was told I have cancer again. That was over years ago. Only Four people out of 60 have called or visited. Of the other 56 or so not one word! nothing. Sad very sad.
When you get cancer it is amazing what you hear and what you do not hear. Amazing the number of friends you did that have that you may have thought were there.
I know who my real friends and family are..

I think people are so amusing. I was telling a nurse at the footy club that I didn't get sick on chemo. Her reply was oh we used to have a saying when I was nursing " the sicker they get the better there chances". Now I just told her I didn't get sick. I just looked at her and said with a big smile on my face " you are an absolute idiot. Goodbye". I think she is still scratching her dumb arse head. There have been some funny stories along the way as I am sure we all have. Maybe we were like that too before our diagnosis. I hope not. But it did make me think xxxx0 -

I was at the grocery store the other day and the guy bagging my groceries just couldn't keep his eyes off of my neck dissection scar. I wouldn't have minded if he asked me a question about it, but the incessant stare really bothered me.0 -

"Did that chemo stuff make you spit up?" and my favorite..."you didn't look like you were going to die." God helps us.

My husband still has the trache in, and it is a common site at the ENT and hospital, but last week we went to his PCP doc office and (of course) had to sit in waiting room. The stares made me very uncomfortable - I hope to God I didn't do that before all this, if I did, NEVER AGAIN. I felt bad for Bob, we didn't talk about it, but I know he noticed it. Ugh, made me want to cry.
The comments that have aggravated ME the most have come from my mother. Every time I tell her something she just says "oh, oh, oh", real scary-nervous-like, and sometimes breaks down crying. It drives me crazy. Then she has the nerve to tell me how strong she is. Argh.0 -

And I was able to get my feeding tube out couple weeks ago.". * Insert his quizzical expression here*. I told him I had cancer. He said, "oh, I didn't know you were sick, I thought you just got tired of being fat. "
he is lucky there was a counter between us or I think I would have clocked him. Mind you I was 125 lbs and 5'2" and I was not fat. I smiled sweetly and pointed to his belly and said, "I see you found the forty I lost ". "hahaha just kidding you look great tho". I figure one stupid comment deserved another.
I think the thing that really upsets me is when people say they didn't recognize me. It happens a lot. When I went to church a while ago, I shook the hand of a lady that has been coming for a few years. I smiled, and we exchanged 'peace'. I said, "peace be with you, Linda.". She just shook my hand and then like five minutes later I feel a hand on my neck, which I DONT LIKE when people do. Scared me half to death. And she leaned in and whispered in my ear, "are you, Dawn?". Uhm. Ya. I'm still me. "I had no idea that was you. "

I hate it when people stare at my neck or face or me in general. Probably doesn't help that I don't dress like everyone around here, either.
