Interesting findings re alcohol
"Compared with never drinkers, women who consumed seven or more alcoholic beverages per week had an almost twofold increased risk of hormone receptor–positive invasive lobular carcinoma (HR = 1.82; 95% CI = 1.18 to 2.81) but not a statistically significant increased risk of hormone receptor–positive invasive ductal carcinoma (HR = 1.14; 95% CI = 0.87 to 1.50; difference in HRs per drink per day among current drinkers = 1.15; 95% CI = 1.01 to 1.32, P = .042)."

I always feel guilty about drinking even though I am hormone negative. Thanks for the article.

I rarely drink anymore, but I do miss it. Will still avoid it even though I have IDC ER+, not lobular ER+. One study is not enough and there are dozens of studies now implicating alcohol as a risk.0 -

Oh thanks! LOL I guess this puts the kabosh on the So Cal sisters dancing on the tables, wearing the lampshades from too much WOOT WOOT at the (RE) union on Saturday! You are just not helping me be the Ostrich I know I can be. Please~ stop with the medical facts!
Kidding, of course~ thanks for the update~invaluable information for many of us. The more we know, the stronger we can become.

is important.
Remember, drinking is only one factor of many.
Too, keep in mind who or what special interest is funding the study. As a grad student many years ago, I learned that the interpretation of statistics is quite subjective to the mindset of the individual doing the interpreting. That means that the same set of numbers can easily be shown to argue several positions. Also, scrutinize the sample, how large was the sample? Who was doing the drinking? Was it only casual drinking? Was it boxed wines or hard liquor? Again, lots of factors just within any given study.
I'm not trying to be dismissive, but you can make yourself crazy over this stuff and there's no reason to beat yourself up over the life you had before the diagnosis.
I would encourage all of us to look forward from our diagnosis and live our lives passionately.0 -

The way I figure it is to drink red wine. Yeah. Anti-oxidents. Fruit of the vine. Lotsa good stuff in my box-o-wine.

I decided awhile back that life is to short to cut out the things you enjoy. If a drink every now and then is enough to give me cancer (again) then so be it. I believe it's all about moderation, being sensible and doing all the right things more often than not. I've known too many "raw food", vegan, marathon nuts who ended up getting cancer anyway. There are some things that we just can't control and are out of our hands.
SO...I say eat, drink and be merry, just don't over due it!

I did everything right, and still got cancer. I'm going to live each day and not fall into the trap that somehow MY actions caused me to get cancer. I appreciate the info; I appreciate people doing research; I hope for a cure. But in the meantime: Life is short, so I plan to enjoy it and live! PS I went out to dinner this weekend and ate filet mignon with peppercorn sauce, fully loaded baked potato, and a beautiful glass of cabernet. OH SO GOOD!!! :-)0 -
Although I don't have
the best eating habits I rarely drank alcohol in recent years. I was dx with Lyme disease last summer and was on antibiotics for 3 months. Prior to that I was on an antidepressant and the warnings are not to drink. So, I had a glass of wine every now and then on holidays. I ate organic fruits, veggies, fish, skim milk, green tea, etc. I had Invasive Lobular Carcinoma in my right breast (6.1cm tumor) and LCIS in the other breast, hence the bilateral mastectomy. I was also ER/PR+, HER2-. I'm the 5th in my family with bc but the only one with lobular which accounts for only 10-15% of all breast cancers. So, go figure!

I also breastfed 4 kids for 2 - 3 years EACH! All the bases were covered, or so I thought.
My sister even went to a specialist (can't remember what their called) to see if it was "family related" and they guaranteed her it was not! Go figure...0 -
