bone scan question

Devasted posted bad news about the bone scan. My question for the board is how do they detect bone mets. Is it only possible to detect this via a bone scan? My pet and ct's have came back clear but how do I know if its gotten to my bones?

Good Question
I wondered that myself, i was having extreme lower back pain, and pain shots were not working on me, I automatically thought it was the cancer that it had gotten into my bones, thankful I was wrong, it was a bad slipped disc that required surgery but it wasnt cancer.
But I am interested in what others think...

The doctors did a ct scan,
The doctors did a ct scan, bone scan & a pet scan on my husband.
All of the scans showed the colon cancer & a mass involving his left mid rib.
They had to do a biopsy of the rib area to determine that it was colon cancer which had spread to the bone.

pet
I have bone mets currently. Detected on routine follow-up PET scan. I was (and remain) completely asymptomatic.
They were able to biopsy one to determine it really was a met.
I'm currently on chemo (which is working - yea! PET after 4 cycles showed every met has shrunk) and also taking a medicine called Zometa (sp?), which supposedly strengthens them bones.
