Good Question
I wondered that myself, i was having extreme lower back pain, and pain shots were not working on me, I automatically thought it was the cancer that it had gotten into my bones, thankful I was wrong, it was a bad slipped disc that required surgery but it wasnt cancer.
But I am interested in what others think...

pet
I have bone mets currently. Detected on routine follow-up PET scan. I was (and remain) completely asymptomatic.
They were able to biopsy one to determine it really was a met.
I'm currently on chemo (which is working - yea! PET after 4 cycles showed every met has shrunk) and also taking a medicine called Zometa (sp?), which supposedly strengthens them bones.
