My clinical trial update

After 8 treatments of the clinical trial chemo, today I have my second CT scan. The result looks very good. The nodules in my lung are stable. No evidence of interval growth or new nodules. The lesions in my liver are smaller as compared to the previous CT scan done 5 weeks ago. The bigger lesions decrease about 30% in size. Couple smaller ones completely disappeared. I am very happy that the clinical trial is still working for me. Tomorrow I will start the 9th treatment.

The chemo drugs I am given are Sorafenib, Erbitux and Irinotecan. The interesting thing is I am KRAS mutated. But this trial recruits both wild type and mutation type. I am just lucky to be in this group. The research doctors need to analyze all the data after the trial is closed to see why it works for me. Their hypothesis is that the combination of Sorafenib and Erbitux may work for some KRAS mutated patient. If that proved to be true, it will make us KRAS mutants very happy.

    Hi Peter, What wonderful news! Your good news is just what I needed to hear! I am waiting to get to UCSF as I too am KRAS mutant and have only been holding my own. Where are you doing your trials. How are your side affects and where are your tumors? Thanks so much for sharing and I will pray that your success continues. Jean

    Clinical Trial
    Hi Jean,

    I have the clinical trial done at Johns Hopkins Cancer Center. The side effects are hair loss, diarrhea and the famous Erbitux rash. But they can be easily controlled by medicine. My primary tumor is in rectum which has been removed by surgery, mets to right lobe of liver and both lung.

    I am wondering, since my sister may need to do a clinical trial, did your current onc. recommend this or did you do this on your own?

    Finding clinical trial
    Hi Marie,

    Before my clinical trial, I had visited Sloan Kettering, UPMC, Georgetown and Johns Hopkins for second opinion. I decided to go with Johns Hopkins because they seem to have a lot of clinical trials available. My first clinical trial failed, but they were able to find another one for me in about 6 weeks. The other place to look for clinical trial is NCI (National Cancer Institute) at NIH. I have friend doing clinical trial there. She seems to be very happy about NCI. And the treatment at NCI is free of charge.

    I'm so glad this treatment sounds good. Clinical trials have always scared me, as I felt like they would use me as a guinea pig to test me, not knowing what the outcome will be, but then again, without people going through these tests, we wouldn't know what these meds would do for us. One could be the cure! and I have great respect for those people doing these trials, thanks for it! I hope it continues to do well, as there is hope in our future!

    I'm glad to hear your update and that the trial meds are working well for you! I, too, am kras mutated, so I will keep this in mind as a possibility in my future, if the gemzar doesn't work for me (but I'm praying that it will).
