Surgery 2/16/10
"The Oak Tree" A mighty wind blew night and day. It stole the oak tree's leaves away. Then snapped its boughs and pulled its bark Until the oak was tired and stark. But still the oak tree held its ground While other trees fell all around. The weary wind gave up and spoke,
"How can you still be standing, Oak?" The oak teee said, "I know that you can break each branch of mine in two, Carry every leaf away, Shake my limbs, and make me sway, But I have roots stretched in the earth, growing stronger since my birth. You'll never touch them, for you see, they are the deepest part of me. Until today, I wasn't sure of just how much I could endure. But now I've found, with thanks to you, I'm stronger than I ever knew."
Especially now, try to remember that you're stronger than any problem you encounter or any disappointment life will bring.
With a single masectomy with lattisimus dorsi flap surgery just around the corner I am trying to keep strong. I know that all of you have been so strong. Wish me luck and say a prayer.
Mirjana

Praying
Praying for you Mirjana. Just remember like Christopher Robin said to Pooh Bear. "You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. And like the mighty oak you will endure and be stronger than you ever knew you were.
Keep us updated on how you are doing and know there are so many wonderful warriors here to help you out.
HUGS to you,

Hi Mirjana,
I am new here--just diagnosed and my surgery is 2/16 too. I have a lumpectomy and a sentinel node biopsy scheduled.
I am wishing you luck and saying a prayer for you too. We will both be strong...this will be part of our cancer journey and one day we too will share our strength as breast cancer survivors.
Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers...
God Bless,
Mary Kay0 -

I had that same surgery on 10-29-09. I will be praying for you that your surgery goes well for you. I did not have any problems with it. I did end up having HER+ and on 2-23 I will be having my 3rd chemo treatment. I pray everything is clear for you and you don't have to go through chemo my new sister in pink.
Blessings and Hugs

Angel,
I am confused...I know from my pathology report that I believe I am HER+, but they said chemo would be decided after the surgery and the biopsies from the tumor and nodes. Not sure I understand "HER+".

HER2+ is a protein gene that creates extra protein that is not normal and is a type of aggressive breast cancer--don't let that scare you. Herceptin is a drug that is giving through a port or vein that targets the extra protein gene and stops it from creating anymore. Herceptin is not a chemo drug.
The final decision will be made from the final pathology report if chemo is needed. I would ask your oncologist when the report is back everything that you might need. Make sure you ask about Herceptin.
Wishing you the best.

Thank you Margo for explaining HER2+. What I was told is when they tested the tumor they removed, the HER2 was + and that meant it was an aggresive type and that is one of the reasons they wanted me to do the chemo.
Hope I don't confuse anyone.

I'll be thinking of both of you tomorrow and wish you the best of luck with your surgeries.
Thanks for sharing that poem about the Oak Tree. It was very inspirational. I have been told by family and friends that I'm an inspiration to them, but I just feel like me. We warriors just do what must be done to beat this beast and are all stronger than we ever knew.
Take care,
