JohnSFO and round 3 of chemo (it went well)

Just thought I'd post an update that wasn't all bad news -
John started his third round of chemo yesterday (Irinotecan and 5FU) and it went really well. He had done Irinotecan back in the fall and it was awful - the first dose laid him out for 10 days in addition to making him vomit copiously. This time they administered a much lower dose along with 5FU instead of Xeloda, and it went fine. Only a little nausea during the infusion, and he came home feeling pretty good - even had a big appetite!

And I can't remember if I posted about it already or not, but they did discover a new rectal tumor (still small about 2 cm) last week. Hopefully the chemo will take care of it.

    John, I am so happy to hear about John's chemo treatment, I am also on Ironotecan(sp) and I had only 3 treatments before it was stopped to prep for the Sir Spheres procedure tomorrow.Has he lost any of his hair on this regimen? my hair is thinning pretty badly but not everyone loses on this treatment. Patti

    Too soon to tell about the hair. It started to thin when he did it last fall, and yesterday was only his first treatment of round 3. Maybe he'll keep his hair because of the lower dosage? Dunno.

    Good luck with the Sir Spheres tomorrow - I'll be sending good thoughts your way, and I know we'll all be eager to hear how it went once you're feeling up to it.

    Glad to heat thar chemo is going well. I barfed a lot when I started back in September. I started Emend after 2 treatments and haven't vomited since.
    I hope the chemo will take care of the new tumor - sna dthe old ones too.

    I'm so glad it went well
    I hope it causes some major shrinkage as well (and brings pain relief with it).

    Good to know that the chemo was easier...poor John!!!!!

    I know of many that have troubles with Xeloda, and not with 5FU...I had 5FU from the start, so I wouldn't know...

    I'm putting my arms around you both...

    sounds as if John is off to a much smoother start this time. Hope it continues throughout the treatment and when all is said and done, the tumor is history!

    It seems so crazy that two drugs that are so alike can be so different for people taking them. Some swear Xeloda is way easier to tolerate, but for others it is 5-FU. And the ironotecan being reduced to a tolerable level is wonderful. I hope this shrinks that new small tumor to nothing!

    As for John and the chemo, I think I posted a little too soon. The day after the infusion it started to hit him and he's felt pretty lousy since - it's now Saturday, 5 days after the infusion and still feeling malaise.

    Yesterday he had the nerve blocking procedure done and it seems to have helped with the sacral pain. Hard to tell as it seems to ebb and flow. When we first got home afterwards it seemed better, then, a little later, like it did yesterday (i.e. real bad), then later last night it seemed like it was helping, so we'll just have to wait and see. Cross your fingers!

    Sounds like John is having such a rough time with treatment. I feel so bad for both of you. I was responding to you on your "vent" the other night and I was booted off. I don't know what happened. I myself have felt that way. We have such a small family and group of friends.

    I am crossing my fingers that things will get better for John and you too. Paula

    I appreciate your support and concern. It's been a really tough month for us. He's had 22 appointments or procedures so far. We try to stay focused on what's going right in our lives and all the things we have to be thankful for.

    This morning I'm discouraged to see how much sniping is still going on here. I won't even get into it, but I wish we could get past that and get back to being supportive of each other.

    Your reply on this thread made me feel supported and cared for and that's why I come here (and to offer the same to others).
