I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully, she seriously was just giving you a very sincere compliment. Our nerves and tempers are on high alert usually with bc, so, we might jump to a conclusion other than what was meant. And, you are beautiful with or without hair. And, I truly mean that!

My neighbor said to me yesterday..."What are you on chemo or something?"
URGHH
I appreciate this post..at work I have had patients ask me if I decided to become a biker or say that I look like a pirate :-S

someone at the office said
What's up with your face? It looks swollen?
This, today, as we got started for a big day of meetings all day long and I'd just walked into the office. I said, well, yeah, it's just one of the benefits of chemo.
I think he realized he was a bit . . . rude . . . and said, Oh, I just meant that I've seen you other times and your face just looks different today . . .
I wanted to say, You can just stop now.
There really is not much we can say to these rather thoughtless intrusions. I think most people don't mean what they say, but most of these people are not articulate nor are they sensitive about what escapes from their lips.
Anyway, what I think he was seeing was that I forgot to put on my eyebrows, so I was sporting that popular cue ball look.
Cheers,

I have been through the gambit of stupid things people say. I had BC 15 years ago also. I did not lose my hair then but have now. Its funny in a certain store where people used to drive me crazy with can I help you , I noticed their hesitation. Until one clerk came to me, and I am very open, I have lost weight need clothes etc.. i try to make it so they dont have to do the "opener" But as for the wall mart thing I would like you have gone and done my business without that. One of the worst things was an insurance person called me to follow up, said she used to be a hospice nurse (knowing I was a nurse) but gave it up. proceded to tell me a story about a friend with breast cancer, anyway I thought it would be inspirational, only the punchline was how she died!!!! I really hope those calls are recorded. I really wish i had the energy to blast her or correct people but I just do the old "turn off" in my head. Not worth it.
I do not have the courage for bald in public yet. mostly wear my scarves.
Good story My husband who drives very carefully was driving a little too fast and got pulled over. I was in pain and he was trying to get me home. We told the policeman he flashed his light at me and with the caution said some things are a little more important, (me) and let us go.0 -

I had a pediatrician at work
I had a pediatrician at work say to me, "that's a radical haircut" when I first stopped wearing my wig. For once, I had a good comeback. I said "yeah it's the chemo special." She then spent 15 min following me around apologizing. Pretty funny actually!0 -

I would have said thanks, it's the chemo look....lol
I've had a doctor that I worked with say to me, "What's going on with you?" this is when she saw me bald and with a kerchief on.
When I went to my pre-surgery appointment at the hospital the anesthesia nurse asked me where I had my hair done because she loved the frosting. I told her that it was compliments of chemo.
I never took offense from some people but then there was my father's woman friend who I did take offense from because she thought I sould look like death warmed over or one foot in the grave already.
I may have mentioned this before so forgive me if it is a repeat.

You look good
Some people are just bone heads, years ago when our son past away I had a friend actually say to me at least you still have one healthy son left, I could not even look at him, I know he was attempting to say something comforting, but guess what...
I believe people just do not think before they speak.0 -

My sister came by to visit me last week - (I was on house lock down due to low white blood cell count), she came out and said .. Oh, you don't look too bad .. Let me see you bald head .. I said .. Excuse me .. In other words, she didn't come by to actually visit me, but to see the ill side efforts of my chemo treatments ..
Go figure ..

I am so sorry, and I feel like I know how you feel. My sister is the same. She couldn't come see me at home after my surgery (bilateral mastectomy) because it was the opening of Sex and the City.0 -

You could say
Thanks, my oncologist styled it.
My story goes- After two surgeries and six month of chemo hell, we finally got out of the house and went to visit my brother, whom I hadn't seen the entire time. The first thing he said when he looked at me was, "Man, you need to get some sun!" Somehow, I didn't kill him. Brother!0 -
