As Donna mentioned, I am one of those with a lot les liver but it grows back I had 70% (or a little more) taken out and things have been A-OK ever since.

Focus On Positive
I had liver resection last July; they removed about 50%,
in hsp 5 days, mostly slept, they kept me pretty sedated
so didn't feel much pain, took about 3 weeks for me to
get going again. I was in a guided imagery group at the
Wellness Center and took a meditation CD with me to the
hospital.....I was calm and ready to take what was coming
when I went into surgery as a result....so any method you
want to use to keep yourself focused on the positive will
really help....also did a lot of walking, exercise and
eating right before the surgery too.....right now I

But...'it is what it is'....

Whew! Now that THAT's out...

Dearheart, I truly believe that you need to hit this thing (cancer) as hard as possible, as quickly as possible. I know you are weary, frightened, tired, etc...I remember the feeling when the doctors said that even though they could find no evidence of cancer left after my pre-surgical chemo/rads, that based on my age and life expectantcy, I should have the bowel resection as scheduled. This was life altering...my entire rectum and sigmoid colon was removed, and my descending colon was fashioned into a 'new' rectum.

Then, just as I recovered from the surgery, the whole mess started again, with my second cancer (breast) that they had found at the same time and said "You need to survive the colon cancer first...THEN we'll deal with the other"...so, surgery, chemo, rads AGAIN! And then, a total bowel obstuction that needed surgery again...sigh...I was more in the hospital than out in 2005!

In December, I celebrate 5 years survivorship since diagnosis. In July, it was 3 years post-any treatment for either cancer. I was miserable during the process, but now, I am happy that I stood up tall, straightened my trembling shoulders, and fought the beast as hard as I could...

I will have to do what is necessary, It's just really hard right now. I really admire all of you and how many of you are handling this, Cancer has it's up and downs and there has got to be a positive that comes out of this.

I had a liver resection in May 2008 at UCSD in San Diego. I was in the hospital 6 days. Although the first 2-3 days were far from fun, I had no complications and really recovered pretty well. I went from thinking after the first day or two that I'd never even be able to sit up and certainly not put my feet on the floor and walk or function normally again to actually riding a horse and going river rafting on a family vacation just over 2-1/2 months after surgery. That probably wouldn't have been what my doctor would have recommended for me, but I did fine. So right after surgery, when you're feeling like you'll never be able to move around normally ever again, know that things definitely get better. My giant 8 inch curved scar has just recently turned completely white, after being dark red for a long time.

I'll be praying for you that all goes well. Please let us know how you are as soon as you're able to.

I had 60% taken out in April 09 and I am now NED. You will be fine, I was not walking too good at 2 weeks and actually needed 8 weeks before I went back to work.

You will need some assistance after surgery.
