Sorry, I have not had the experience or read about it or anything. I hope others will post who have more experience. I know there's not much time, but I would advise writing down your questions to ask the Dr. when you see him, if you are concerned.

Hi Pammy ... I had a wire-guided lumpectomy in January ... and the worst part of it was the dye ... because the couldn't numb the boob to inject the dye. Yikes ... did that hurt. So you are very lucky that your surgeon will not do that until you are asleep. To look back on it ... I wonder why ALL surgeons don't do that ... unless it's the fact that they need some person with some special degree/license/certification or something to actually "handle" the dye since I guess it's radioactive ... or something.
Anyway ... they'll probably numb your boob ... then insert the wire ... and you won't feel a thing. It's not a big deal at all and you'll do just fine.

Pammy, Yes I had all that done last week.I know what your going though. The wire guide was pretty easy. I did not have any pain with that and they did not numb me. Its like a shot with a wire in it and them they take a picture to see if its placed right.For me this was no big deal. I had 2 different dyes. The one was the night before surgery and it was like getting a bee sting, about 6 times. That hurt, but faded fast. The other dye I had was in surgery when the sen node tested positive, and I was asleep for that. You will pee Blue for a few days Easier said then done, but don't worry to much about tomorrow It was not like I had thought it would be. My prayers are with you.0 -

My wire guided lumpectomy
My wire guided lumpectomy was done in July 2008. The day started in nuclear medicine with finding the sentinel node (first node if cancer has spread to the nodes) for biopsy purposes. Dye was injected into the cavity where the tumor was and it was watched until it reached the sentinel node at which time a marker was placed on the skin so the surgeon knew where it was. This procedure was not painful - just needle sticks and 2 hours on a table waiting for the dye to move. Next I had a mammography guided wire placement to help the surgeon find the tumor. I sat in a chair while 2 radiologists placed the wire. A local anesthetic was used so there wasn't too much pain, but it was uncomfortable and scary. Then I was off to surgery for the lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy which turned out negative for cancer. Hope this helps. Good luck tomorrow!0 -

Don't worry Pammy you will be numb for the mamo. It won't hurt at all. The only thing I felt was the needle when they numbed my breast. They didn't inject the dye until I was asleep either. They will give you a seditive (sp?) before surgery. If you feel anxious take a xanax before you leave home.
Lumpectomy surgery is not bad at all. I will be thinking of you tomorrow.

The first time I had a wire-guided lumpectomy, the radiologist was able to look at my films and insert the needle without having to do a preliminary mammogram. There was one done after that to make sure he had inserted it in the right place, but that didn't really hurt. Since I expected much more, the whole process was pretty cool, because it was less than I expected. Even then, I knew that this was a special radiologist.
This year, I had another wire-guided lumpectomy, and it wasn't as easy. The spot was in a very hard to find place (deep and almost to my armpit), so this required much more 'fussing', and a lot of mammograms just to find the clip. (Different radiologist this time). Most of the reason this one was much worse was because of the location. But, the thing that I've remembered most is their putting a styrofoam cup over the wire and telling me not to hit it so it's dislodged. I guess it wasn't that bad, if that's my most vivid memory.
I do remember the dye being much more painful, so you are fortunate that you won't feel a thing with that.

The dye, the wire, the lumpectomy -- all are doable. However, what they did to me was poop me out a lot before my lumpectomy. I was scheduled for the dye injection at 10:00 a.m., wire insertion at 12:00 noon and lumpectomy at 3:30 p.m. But, surgery was postponed until 5:30 p.m. Long wait - I was pooped by the time they took me. However, at 8:30 p.m. I had my crackers and Sprite and by 8:45 p.m. I was getting in the car for the 2 hour ride home. Again, no sweat kiddo. Just take it as it comes and don't fret about delays. No, do not take a xanax or any drug before your surgery unless you talk to your doctor about it. I wanted to take a nerve pill too and that was a big nono! The wire didn't hurt, they numbed me first. And, I was asleep for the dye. You will do fine.0 -

I took xanax daily from dx to end of treatment. Couldn't have made it without it and my zoloft.0 -

First, good luck tomorrow! I will be praying for you! I know that you are anxious, as we all were. But, just remember that this is just one more step towards your CURE!
Second, I had the wire guided lumpectomy also. However, I never had the mammogram. They numbed me, so, I did not feel anything when they inserted the wire. They used an ultrasound on me to show the tech where the titanium chip was. The titanium chip had been inserted in me weeks before to show the tumor site. So, the tech used the ultrasound to guide him as to where to insert the wire. ( which was right by the titanium chip ) Am I repeating myself here? lol But, there was no pain. It just looked weird to have a wire protruding out of your boob. lol
Third, my pic keeps changing on here, as does yours. Or, to me it does. I log on, and, you have a different pic and so do I. I log on again, and, yours and mine are back to the original. Hmmmm...wonder what that is all about. But, I love your new pics hon! I posted new ones on my Expression Page.
Finally, just know that you are in great hands tomorrow and that we will all be there with you in our thoughts and spirit!
