update
Thanks for all of your prayers and words of encouragement to me and others. I had my MRI the other day and will be having lumpectomy on June 15th. Continue to pray for me that surgery goes well without complications. I am nervous about being put to sleep. I have never had general anesthesia before. I am trying not to think about it. I believe that God will be with me. May God continue to bless you all.

It will be........
It will be ok. You will come through your surgery just fine. I have every confidence that not only will God be with you on that day, but so will all of us here!
I will keep you in my prayers, and I will especially ask that your fears are eased. Hang in there and before you know it, the surgery will be over, and you will be helping others as they face their surgery.

Try not to worry about anesthesia....
I know it can be scary the first time, but you will be fine (I've been thru it 7 times, Wed makes the 8th).
If this helps any....here has been my experience....
When you get to the hospital, they will take you back after you registar to put a gown on (yes....you will be butt naked underneath!)
Then they will bring you out to a pre-op area & put you into bed....here, they will ask you questions, take your vitals, start your I.V. and at this point I pretty much start to weaken in my strength (after the stick for the I.V.) soooooo.....
This is when I request the shot to relax me. My Dr always ordered something to relax me while I waited my turn (We should be use to "waiting" by now!)....
When it is your turn, they will take you back to the operating room ....
This may seam scary because there is alot of buzzing going on & alot of things are going to happen very quickly...
They will transfer you to a little skinny table (Yep, you will feel like you are going to fall off the sides, but trust me you wont't!!)...
They will put a "grounding" pad under your thigh and hook you up to a few more wires (none of this hurts it's just scary)....
At this point I usually ask for a warm blanket (ahhhhh.......it feels so good! Right from the heater to my body {which has been shaking non stop till now})....
The anesthesiologist will tell you "23 seconds" and you will answer "what?" and soon will find out this is how long it took you to fall asleep.....
Then....wah la!!....you wake up in recovery thinking "darn", I was rather enjoying my nap!!

So from the time in pre-op, when they got me all ready and treated me like a queen(warm blanket, leg massage, surgical stockings/tighty-whities!,IV set-up)to waking up in my room, I was totally out,i.e. no recollection of anything.
General anesthesia is no big deal. Oh, and in my case, I always ask for as much anti-nausea stuff as they can add to the mix, because otherwise I start vomiting after I wake up. You might ask them if they could do this as a precautionary measure. (At my hospital, the anesthesiologist came in and talked to me for quite awhile before he did anything, so I had a chance to discuss and ask questions about everything related to the anesthesia.)
And after you wake up, suck on ice chips and drink as much water as possible to get the anesthesia out of your system sooner. It takes weeks, they say, to get all of it out, so drink, drink, drink (pee,pee, pee!!).
All this is to say that you just have to let go and let God, basically. Between now and the 15th, try not to dwell on it -- stay busy and do some fun stuff.

Hi love9kidz, I just had the surgery for a lumpectomy 2 days ago. Don't worry about the anesthesia. Thats the easy part. When they were ready to take me to the OR, the gave me a shot though the IV. I remember kissing my husband and thats it,until I woke up in recovery. The pain is not horrible. The pain Meds take care of that. I also had 10 nodes taken out so there is some pain in my arm, again its not to bad. I also was scared and glad that part is over. Really I am not telling you not to be scared, all I can tell you that for me it's not that bad. There are so many people praying for us,you just can't go wrong. As far as thinking about it, your going to think everyday until you wake up in recovery. The nurses in recovery room were great. First your on the bed and then in a chair, then they give you somthing to drink and eat, then you pee and go home. Then you wait again for path report. Thats it. Its going to be just fine.It's always the waiting, this is the bad part and there is nothing you can do about it. My thoughts and prayers are with you.0 -

for me I am kind of a lightweight also.. I do not remember going from the pre-op area to the OR.. My daughter said I talked to her.. but I don't remember anything,,
I do however, remember my dream.. I was sort of cheated on that one.. they say that the dream is suppose to be really a nice place and relaxing.. I dreamt of work.. LOL.. of all things.. Work...
You will be fine.. let them know when you get there that you are afraid of this and they will help you through it..

Same here Debi. I was "out" before I ever got near the OR. The last thing I remember was "we're going to give you a little something to relax you". Bonk! Out!
Couldn't tell you what the OR looked like....lol!

You got to dream too??? Sorry for what your dream was about, but you mean there is a potential to have a really pleasant dream? 7 times and I never dreamed once!! First I don't get the leg massage....now I don't get to dream about some "hottie" giving me the leg message? The only thing I had on my legs were compression hose and the little machines to keep my blood circulating. I feel cheated, too.
I hate and am afraid of anesthesia, but the more you have it, the easier it is. Ten years ago, I was wide awake going into the operating room; now my husband says goodby before the relaxation drug, because I'm out as soon as they give it to me and wake up in the recovery room a 'few minutes' (actually hours) later.

I didn't get the leg mesages.. I only had the hose things to keep the blood circulating.. and they were more annoying than anything0 -

I didn't dream, but my warped sense of humor suddenly appeared when they called for a "transporter" (formerly known as an orderly) to take me to my room from recovery. The guy showed up....he was all of 12 years old....and as he pushed me onto the elevator, he said in a cocky little teenaged voice..."so what are you in for"? I replied that I had just had a mastectomy. He said "oh, what's that"? I said...they cut off my right boob.
Oy, the poor guy looked at the floor & never said another word.
Me, for some insanely morbid and vindictive reason...I giggled.

Even my husband chastised me for sending the kid into a tailspin. Pffftttt, somehow, the mood I was in at the time...I just didn't care. LOL!

Will hope for the best possible outcome from your upcoming surgery. I understand your apprehension - for me, lumpectomy was my first anesthesia and surgery, ever. Next only to the diagnosis itself, it was the scariest point of all.
