BTW, Claudia, did you say that you are interested in books about civil rights? Am I remembering correctly? If so, I have a book recommendation for you.

Ok, I'm reading this great biography/history that just came out. It's called "Passing Strange" by Martha A. Sandweiss. Although it's not about the civil rights era of the 1960's, it covers civil war times, reconstruction, and beyond. The story is about Clarence King, a famous geologist and society man of his day who had a secret double life as a working black man, complete with secret wife and children in Brooklyn. Until his death, his wife never knew that he was white or that he was well known in Manhatten as a scientist. His white family and friends never knew about his life with a black wife and kids. It's fascinating and explores the racial climate of the time. The author mixes tidbits of what is known about Clarence's life with Ada Copeland (a woman born into slavery, who was working as a nursemaid in New York when they met) and his very public life as a famous white scientist to come up with a complex picture. Lots of history in there, too! Sorry to go on and on.
I will also be waiting for a call from the authorities!!

WOW!! Thanks, Mimi! That book sounds right up my alley~ I will be going to Borders today, and I will definitely look for it. I may be taking Amtrack the 300+ miles back home, and if so, I will be really happy I have a good book with me! It fascinates and at the same time apalls me how very little I actually know, and how much there is yet to learn. Sigh~ I have to stay in remission; at this point I have to live until at least 110 just to catch up on reading!!!

Have a great time and
Have a great time and remember have a drink on us! Give Joyce all our love and hugs and tell her we need to see her post again. Love you both, Lili0 -
I would love to buy you two
I would love to buy you two a drink. Perhaps you could pretend I've done so when you're there. Are you staying in one place or going out "honky tonking". That's great! Enjoy! And please give each other a hug for me.

And I told everyone at work
And I told everyone at work I was going on a blind date with someone I met on the internet.
Also, Claudia, by my count we are up to at least five rounds of drinks! Can't wait.
Also, (uh, oh) I am big into civil rights and have way too many opinions. We may need six rounds.
I looked up the address on mapquest and should see you by five tomorrow.
Now, what to wear....love, Joyce0 -
what to wear
What to wear.....I know you are coming straight from work, and you told me what your work "uniform" is, and I have one just like it! That's as close as I thought we would get to calling to see what the other is wearing! Whooo-hooo...could we get any more girly than this??? See you tomorrow!

Had we only known you would be available, we could have raised a few more glasses and had a 4 hour "date"! Nice to see you online, indeed!
