Tumor is back

They found tumors on my left kidney in 2016 and performed a partial left nephrectomy. They’re back. Now they’re removing the entire kidney.

My doctor hates me. They scheduled the procedure for March. I called once to ask if I could get an earlier date. I was worried it would spread.

I went in to talk to my doctor in person. He called me a “big fatty.” He said he’d schedule dates for Black Friday because he “hates his family anyway.” Kept complaining about the hospital and having to talk to patients rather than operate: I don’t trust him now but what options do I have.

If I try to get another doctor the cancer could spread between now and whenever that new doctor schedules surgery.

I feel more alone than ever.

    Hi Mick,

first of all, i can imagine what you're going thru. Please know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE and that everything will be OK.

I don't know where you live, but there are awesome doctors all over. I live in NJ/NYC and there are a couple that I recommend in this area who are also surgeons, and very professional. How big are the tumors they found?

The community on this page has been very helpful to me while I went thru my experience this past few months.

Hey Mick, so sorry you've had this bad experience with this doctor. If your kidney cancer is a low grade or slow growing, would you feel comfortable waiting to switch to a surgeon you'd be more comfortable with? That might be an option? I don't think you should have to use a doctor you don't trust. Please know we as patients that have through this - we understand and care. Praying for you. Please keep us updated.

I'm in total agreement with Deanie on this. In your pathology report, what did they say about your cancer grade? My doctor told me that I may have had my cancer for 10 years before it was found—just because it is slow growing. But, I also understand you being anxious to get the cancer out. I just have to believe your trust in your surgeon tops your rush to get it out.

When I was diagnosed, I was so scared, but my surgeon put me at ease and gave me hope. He was my lifeline when I needed it most. I can't imagine what I would have done had I gotten a surgeon that I didn't feel I could trust.

I hope you strongly consider looking for a new doctor.

Wishing you only the best during this difficult time.
