Less than 24 hours post Surgery

Wheeled down to operating room at 7:30am yesterday for a Single Port, Nerve Sparring and ligament sparring (non cutting of ligament connected to bladder) Robotic Laparoscopic Prostatectomy. Completed at 1:30pm and sent to recovery and discharged home at 5:00pm. Doctor talked to wife afterwards and she recalled him explaining why procedure went 1 1/2 hours longer than expected. He said to her recollection that the cancer was deeper than anticipated and something else which she can’t recall that he said does occur but is no big deal it just takes more time to work around. I’am guessing he did not talk to me as he was late for his second surgery and I was out. Unfortunately by 12:30am realized my catheter slowly stopped filling up and my urge to go to the bathroom was great. By the time I got to the ER this morning my bladder was quite filled up with a lot more than it should have. They flushed the catheter and bladder 4 times and took out blood clots. We all know the waits at ER rooms so home around 4:00am. No sleep last 24 hours except anesthesia sleep. Will keep updating.

I am glad you are doing well and the problems seem to be in the rear view mirror. Hope your pathology returns with negative margins and you have a rapid recovery. Please keep us updated.

Hopefully no more visits to the ER.

Best wishes for a good 'report card' and a smooth recovery from now on.

Have others had issues with blood clots blocking catheter from draining?

I experienced urinary retention after a catheter removal. Not from blood clots, but from swollen prostate after a prostate tumor ablation procedure. I can empathize about your experience with not being able to pee. YIKES! It was the worse thing I've ever went through. I had to self catheterize for a few days until swelling subsided. Not fun! I'm OK now, but you made me cringe when reminded by your trip to the ER. Hope no more clogs for you.

That is another concern when catheter comes out. I have always had weak flow

I think It's more likely you'll have a much better flow after your catheter removal being you don't have a prostate anymore.

Best wishes on your recovery. My catheter story after prostatectomy was rather boring. No real issues other than the inconvenience of sleeping on my back for 10 days.

Regarding urinating, your urethra will have fewer obstacles beween your bladder and penis, so expect to pee like a fire hose. My record distance so far is 7 feet…lol

It would be nice for change. I just want that first bowel movement

You are a couple of days away from a BM. Don't worry about it, it will happen. Just don't rush the issue or force it.

wow well that’s why they keep you in the hospital overnight. I rarely hear of people getting discharged the same day. Sorry that happened to you. I don’t understand why they sent you home. Hopefully, you’ll be OK now.

    Hi,

Most survivors including me had a large increase in flow after the cath was removed and the bladder was able to retain some urine.

Everything was going great, had my bowel movements walking a mile, minimal pain. 6th post surgery this morning sitting at breakfast, close to be done and going on a walk, when suddenly! Extreme paid 9-10 on 10 scale in calf. After 30 minutes went to ER. Have blood clot in right calf. My calf on evaluation showed no signs of a clot, no swelling, no redness, no warmth. ER Doctor initially thinking from 6 1/2 hours in my long surgery position maybe contributed to pressure or swelling around nerves , But to be safe and rule out a blood clot wanted an ultrasound done and spotted it. Another hiccup.

Old Salt, Not only I hope but I hope for my wife even more. She is getting physically and emotionally drained. Her father passed two years ago after dealing with full fledged Dementia for a couple years and my wife assisting family in care handling of everything the last six months. Then a year ago her sister was diagnosed with aggressive Ovarian cancer and 8 days in hospital after surgery. Now me. I feel so much for her as she is getting a brunt of things.

Damn Wheel...sorry to hear about your clot and your wife's issues too.

I thought all the talk from my nurses about waking/moving to avoid blood clots was overblown. Guess not.
