My oncologist told me to avoid soy. But, he also said it can be hidden in many foods, so, it is impossible to not get some. And, I could eat a whole jar of peanut butter, especially if I have Ritz crackers. LOL

I can give up soy, but don’t take away my PB!

I was eating tofu like a dummy and I'm hormone positive. Some days I don't feel like eating so I snack on apple slices and peanut butter. I need to cut back on that! :(

    Peanut butter and cancer

At least you have an oncologist who worries about what you eat.  None of the two I have been assigned to had told me anything about PB or soy.  I knew of soy through reading about healthy foods during cancer. My oncologist (after a year) told me to take Vit D3 pills because is good in fighting cancer.  I knew that from the start since I started looking for all I could read when Im was diagnosed.

I changed  computers and I could not log in to this site.  Let me check the information in the medical journals and I give you feedback.

I love PB but is so sweet that I can't eat more than a very light spread on a small soda cracker.

    Have a nice day

    Peanut butter and cancer

As I promised you last night, I made a search of articles.  No much articles. In one article (some Journal of Nutrition, I can't find the link), the researchers talk about a relationship between cancer of the esophagus and stomach with ingestion of peanut butter and other nuts.  However, there is a long term study which states that use of peanut butter reduces the risk of developing breast fibrosis in women who consumed peanut butter and nuts in the period of 9 - 15 years old. The fibrosis may be considered a risk factor in developing cancer after 60 years. There is no direct correlation between PB and cancer risk reduction. And I also saw a recipe of peanut butter and banana shake that so was delicious that I regret not having bananas and peanut butter at home.

    Moderation

I think the best thing is moderation. Take whatever you like especially if you have no appetite and have lost weight etc but everything in moderation. There's so many studies, one saying something and another completely contradictory that it's a headache. So I have decided anything and everything in moderation.
My doctors too said avoid soy but I was never one to overindulgence in soy but still got breast cancer. After all the treatments it Still came back so there are no guarantees.

I am surprised at all the comments concerning not ingesting soy after breast cancer diagnosis. The stuff I am reading all support soy in the diet - and I read mostly nutrition based newsletters. I am off whole milk, and drink soy milk and have for the last 20 years or so and eat tofu regularly. I am ER and PR positive...

When I was first diagnosed with HR+ breast cancer in 2009, I was told by my oncologist to avoid soy products. Recently I've heard soy products are good for breast cancer survivors so I put in a call to my oncologist from 2009 to see if he had reversed his position on the subject. I trust his opinion and always felt he stayed on top of the latest research in his field. He said the current research is all over the place about soy; but, in his opinion, he no longer saw it as a problem so he gave me the green light on it.

As far as peanut butter is concerned - If it's a problem, I don't even think I want to know. I've given up a lot, but peanut butter will not get added to the list. Ignorance is bliss and so is almost anything that includes PB :-)

Hi Monarch, Yes, I agree. What I am going to miss most is the alcohol - specifically wine and the light buzz I would get from it. But I think there is more risk in drinking alcohol than eating/drinking soy! lol

I can't give up peanut butter too... My doc did not tell me to eliminate any certain foods just everything in moderation, which doesn't help me because I'm certain my Breast Cancer DX is due to something. I've given up processed meats(I miss bacon), Red Meats, Sugar and Alcohol just from my own research. I know Peanut butter has some sugar in it, but I love to have some straight from the jar. It's my dessert. I guess I will have to give that up too! UGH!
