PET Results
PET results show no sign of cancer!!!!! Inflammation in cheek from infected titanium still seen. Next PET in 2-3 months. Wonder what BCBS will say to that......
Ended up in hospital at Mayo Tuesday night. They thought possibly cellulitus had seeded to blood stream. ER doc said it would be a shame to survive cancer 3 times and then lose my life to an infection. They loaded me up with IV antibiotics. I was able to keep appt. with ENT yesterday. Team decided the titanium link in jaw had to come out. Once metal gets an infection, it will never heal. There was a clinical trial, they have had great success with, which is a regime of meds that I could have tried but it was not permanent solution, they use it when no other options. Had the option of using other fibula and doing entire surgery (19 hours) again but there is a risk flap could fail and I am not as strong as I was 2 1/2 years ago. Bottom line, metal link is coming out, prayers that enough viable bone that they don't need to replace a section with tissue. Looking at a 2 hour surgery and a couple of days stay. ENT said "by all rights, you should be dead". While I didn't like that comment, I do have great faith in the team there. I could have this done here in STL but just feel in better hands there. I so appreciate my brother flying me back and forth and family being with me, I am so blessed in that respect. At the same time, I feel very guilty that they should be out enjoying their lives. I think we have chosen the right course of action and as my favorite radiologist said, I am lucky the PET was clear and we were able to have a discussion regarding options. Trying to look at the bright side. They do feel speech and eating issues due in part from radiation but in part to swelling from cellulitus that can take months to recover from, so I still hold out hope in those areas. Sorry for rambling...please keep safe travels for my family and my surgery in your prayers.
While waiting to see the radiologist, someone rang the bell...made me cry. I think that will always be emotional for me.

I think you are NED
Candi,
Your ER doctor and ENT have quite a sense of humor, I hope everything plays out in your favor.
The bright spot is your family, what a bunch of jewels.
All taken together you sound pretty strong willed and body sound. Now knock off these problems one at a time.
On your mojo team!
Matt

Great news and happy for you and Mr. NED. Talk about being in the same boat, If you remember about 3 years ago I got a very bad mastoid infection that almost killed me. All my doctors were looking for cancer and somehow overlooked the mastoid infection and by Gods grace while at a chiropractor office he seen it on a report. I wish that I could speak again and swallow like normal people do but that may never happen for me, so I accept my new normal as it is because I know a lot of others who are a lot worse than I am.
Happy happy for you

Thank you everyone. I am sad to say that my beloved Mother passed away yesterday. She was one special lady, seven children and she always made each of us feel special, whether a birthday, a dance, a first date it was all about us as individuals. She was the same with her grandchildren, one said it best "she never judged me, she just loved me." I will miss her terribly. She was so excited to hear my recent NED. Until we meet again, Mom, I love you!
