Juicer
My wealthy lawyer kid brother has kindly gifted me a juicer which is his latest health kick. He has read that therapy can be rough and wants me to get enough nutrition. He also tells me these devices are huge in the US of A. Any knowledge from my good virtual friends? Any good vegetable recipes as fruits tend to be high sugar? I also have a food blender but it is a nuisance to clean and a hand blender. I am fascinated by the juicer! Help!

We just believed in juicing and have been doing it for the past 15 plus years. Our juicer just gave up this past Friday so we will go shopping for another one in Honolulu this Tuesday. We used it not necessarily for nutrition, but for boosting the immune system. I believe it works for both especially for those with swallowing problems.

Thank you for being our unofficial (or official) tech guy.

fine but...
Juice is fine as long as you have no problems consuming liquid and nutrition orally. If you are at all struggling keeping up on calories then make sure what ever you consume has caloric density. Fancy term to mean lots of calories in the smallest amount. Drinking an 8 ounce glass of vegetable juice may sound good but it has few calories; great if you are trying to diet. The same ounces of a protein powder liquid will pack a LOT more calories into your body.

LIQUID NUTRITION
Hey Guzzle, I had a PEG tube and have been on a liqid diet for 13 1/2 years, and was introduced, by friends several years ago, to the wonders of the Vitamix blender. It will liquify anything that you put into it, including the kitchen sink, in 3 minutes. The Vitamix is a bit pricy too, but the company provides a discount on factory reconditioned models, for folks who have a doc's note regarding the medical necessity for having one. So, if you happen to need additional calories in liquid form, more than what a juicer can provide, you might want to consider looking into investing in one. I'm able to swallow now, so I am able to taste the family meals that my best half, Diane, blends for me, which turn out to be very tasty when seasoned properly. The VM is fairly quick and easy to clean. Best wishes in finding the best nutrition addition solution.

Many thanks Patrick. I have a processor but will go with your recommendation when it expires. In notice you still excercise. This is something I will really miss when U start rt/ct in a few weeks. I have had messages from people on this site who have really got back to full fitness and eating is part of this. Greetings from Liverpool.

Got a reconditioned model, fully guaranteed at a nicely discounted price... still pricy but could never go back to any other blender. The thing is an absolute beast and even makes soups! It was a life saver when I could barely eat and we use ours every day for protein/fruit smoothies and dozens of other things.

Juicing is great
Did it before cancer, during treatment and now. Just had a delicious "purple cow" Carrot, beets, ginger and lemon!
I admit, I lost my taste for carrot juice and anything acidic about a week after starting radiation. I then switched to almond milk, chocolate protein, frozen wild blueberries and a banana. That I could tolerate better.
I have a "Jack Lalane" juicer from Costco. I guess it would be the "Wrangler" line of blender, but it works great and only cost $80. I had a Champion Juicer for 10+ years but it did not like greens.
Cheers,
PJ

In regard to exercise, the word to remember, which pertains to all things treatment and recovery related, is Patience. Once you are on the other side of the treatment, and into recovery you will love the feeling of getting back into your exercise. Remember, muscles have memory, so once you are able to resume exercise activities, you will no doubt, be happily back in shape in not so much time as you might think. Just hang in there, and take it slow and steady, the gym will be there when you are ready.

Hey Guzzle,
Blend up a big vanilla milkshake and put a few drops of green food dye! Best green drink you can make!
Don, the title alludes to both a green herb and your undoubted wisdom! You are hilarious mate. I like the way you balance experience with irony. A very Brit trait. What can I do to test eating progress given that we do not have taco bell on our little island?

Guzzle
I bought one from TV from some American talk show host Montel Williams. I like his blender a whole lot more than his TV show. It even makes hot soup by blending it for about 10 minutes. (Go easy on the onion) I use to make what I called garbage smoothies. Anything left over in the fridge went in. I kept notes on what tasted good and others I never wanted to try again. I was always big on the fruity mixtures which more than likely made me the fruitcake I am today. I bought bags of frozen fruits unless I could get fresh when in season. A few times I put some Jack Daniels whiskey in just to spice it up a bit. (I didn't put that in my notes) The best part was experimenting.

Don't quote me as saying special green herbs in a blender drink is something recommended unless you want to gag yourself. Baked herbs make fine dining though.

Jeff, thanks mate. Will have a crack buddy. JD is pretty cool brother but it AINT whiskey its bourbon ad you know and its not up there with makers mark! If you are ever in the UK and we both have taste buds I will educate you about whisky my friend! But you cant knock JD with a mixer! Putting a mixer in a decent scotch is a sin. Having seen your e mail address will drop you a line.
We may have a bit in common historically. You'll never Walk Alone. G.
