Is 12 weeks too soon

in Kidney Cancer #1

I'm 12 weeks post-op, radical neph.  Procedure was laparoscopic, with largest of the incisions being about 4 inches.  I recovered without incident and am feeling good.  I'm going to Cedar Point this weekend.  For those of you who don't know, Cedar Point is the Roller Coaster capital, with the biggest, fastest coasters in the states, if not the world...I'm talking bad a**!!  I just wonder if 12 weeks is too soon to be riding coasters.  I'm going to call my doctor, of course, and I'm sure he'll advise against riding the big ones, but just wanted to see what you guys would advise.  Surely all my innards have been secured with scar tissue by now, don'tcha think?!

    Ice...could ya elaborate?  I mean, you're not usually a man of few words Wink.  No, it's not too soon or no, my innards aren't secured with scar tissue?  Would you be riding the coasters 12 weeks post-op?

    Start with...

    the smaller ones and work your way up, my guess is you'll find out pretty quickly if you're ready or not.  I had a full lap as well and I'm pretty sure I could have done it without issue at 12 weeks, but we're all different.

    i know we are all different but our surgeon told us that even though the outside may look fine and look healed, it takes a full 6 months for everything on the inside to be fully healed too. Mom had a radical open nephrectomy and she has sutures on the inside that take the full 6 months to dissolve once things have healed properly.

    obviously you can feel and see how its healing on the outside, but you can see and feel what is exactly going on inside...if that makes sense??

    You had a major organ removed your body is not done adjusting! Wether you realize it or not things are still shifting and finding their new permenant home..go have fun but please stay off hugh g force rides..such as rollar coasters and a few other things! Huggggsss

    How do you get off???

    The problem I see is that if you decide part way through a coaster ride that things aren't going well, how do you suddenly stop?  They like to make the first drop a doozie and if your insides say "UNCLE" you have to endure the whole rest of the ride.  The old saying: "You only live once" can be seen either as a call to adventure or a call for sensibility.  Have fun!

    When I was in my prime, in perfect health, trampolining and competing for my University Judo team, you wouldn't have got me anywhere near the gentlest of coasters - guess I must be some kind of wimp!!

    I'm 8 weeks post surgery today, 9/25, and I feel good enough to do Cedar Point.  Good luck.  Have fun.

    Well I wish I waited longer

    Well I wish I waited longer for my first big bike ride. I now have a nice hernia from ripping things open. Ron

    Bad idea

    I like the take no prisoners attitude, life is for the living; but in this case, I think you should wait until next season. If you have a problem, it could be a big problem very easily.

    enjoy the park, but hold on the rides.

    I know you love to 'grab life by the horns' which is the best way to live, but I think in this case you need to be cautious! You only have ONE real opportunity to allow your body to settle and heal properly, you have ENDLESS opportunities to ride the big roller coasters. 

    It is great to hear you are making such a quick recovery Twinie! Whatever you decide I hope you have a great weekend:)

    Best case scenario is you are sore for a few days.  Worst case is things move around inside.  Those rollercoster put a lot of G's.  I went on a rollercoster 8 months out, a regretted it.  I used to love rollercosters....but I will never step on one again.

    Fortunately, my daughter is now old enough to not need a parent on the rides.  But now, I need to pay for a friend to come.

     

    I just can not imagine a good outcome.   (12 weeks out, I was feeling pretty good, and started coaching again.  I swear I tore a mucle, and have not been the same since).

    I've waited

    to respond. Because I want you to go have FUN! But my physical therapist experience says NO! First if there is any weakness in soft tissue healing, it will be prone to hemmorrage from the G-force. Second, you have to have some degree of hematoma left in there. It will be contained and slowly resolving. To disrupt that process may lead to risk of the necrotic cells being distributed throughout you abdomen. How can that be good? Go to the park. But buy a beer and sit on a bench and enjoy the others riding the coaster. Maybe you will end up peeing your pants just like them anyhow. Now if that's not fun, then what is?

    Thanks all!  I read what each of you had to say and value all of your advice.  Knowing me tho, I was pretty sure I would throw caution to the wind and ride the coasters, regardless of what everyone said...cuz that's how I roll (I have a bit of rebel in me).  That was until I read what fox had to say.  He pretty much had my attention when he started throwing words around, like, prone to hemmorrage, hematoma and necrotic cells.  Sounds like you know what your'e talking about, fox, so thanks for chiming in. 

    I called my doctor and was given the green light but I think I'll heed the warnings posted here and follow a bit more of fox's advice and have a beer instead.  I'll ride plenty but stay away from the biggest and baddest.  Cedar Point's HalloWeekends have begun and I hear it gets pretty scarry after dark, so I can't promise I won't pee my pant's.

    If you want to get your adrenaline flowing just wait until it's time for your first set of CT scans. It's called scanxiety and you don't get to escape it.

    It's just one of the many perks of club membership around here.

    Aw Neil... ya had to tell her..??  J/K.. yes that can be a bit of a tough time for some of us.. but again, with all you know, you should be OK...  However those follow ups can give a lot of relief when they come back all clear...

    Thanks for the heads up, Neil!  Fortunately, I haven't had to deal with that yet.  As far as I know, I won't be having a CT, just chest x-rays, in December.  Seems odd to me but that's what the doctor said...chest x-rays.  Not sure how soon before the appointment date scanxiety will set in but, I'd can think of so many other ways to get my adrenaline pumping...

    I answered my own question

    and the answer...hell yes!  Too soon for coasters!  I rode two (not the biggest or the baddest) and I was done.   I might even go so far as to say it was too soon to walk around an amusement park for 13 hours.  I was so unbelievably sore...from head to toe.  I blamed my soreness on age till my 28 year old daughter called me the following day to say her every muscle hurt.  Guess age really is just a number...so much for my excuse, huh?!  At any rate, I had a great time and can't wait to go again when I can ride without worries.
