20 Months and NED

in Head and Neck Cancer #1
Had a PET/CT scan today and the results are in...NED. That makes 20 months from the end of treatment and I feel fine. Cheers.

    Congrats, and a question about the NED clock
    Congrats on your 20-month NED scans--ALWAYS good news to hear on this site. I have my next scan coming up in April, which raises a question that my docs have not been clear to answer. When does the NED "clock" start? At first I went by my first NED scan date, but my onc doc says he considers it to be the date when treatments started (and presuming NED scans since then). Because of a false positive on my very first post-treatment scan, it was several months after treatment started before I got my first conclusive NED scan results. So, in my head I'm a bit less than 2.5 years NED, but my doc calls it three years (rads and chemo started in March 2009). I know that what really matters is that I'm NED on my latest scan, but my wife and I like to acknowledge and celebrate these kinds of anniversaries in our lives, and it would be nice to do that with some better accuracy.

    I'm in the same boat as you, false positives on my first 2 scans. I consider the day I was walking on sunshine after hearing the NED pronouncement the very first time to be my NED anniversary. Cheers.

    Conservative NED clock, too
    Jimbo,

    Like you, I use the more conservative NED anniversary as the day I got my first truly clean scan result. That takes me longer to get to the "magic" 5-year date than my doc uses, but that's OK--I want to be as confident as I can when that day arrives. I know that there is no guarantee at five years, either, but there is no use in falsely hurrying that date to come around.
