Komen Stops Giving
I read an article that has kinda got my dander up. The Susan G. Komen foundation will not give any more money to Planned Parenthood for exams, mammograms, etc. for the low income and women without insurance to get the care they may need. Why??? The new VP is against abortion so no more money because Planned Parenthood also does abortions. I feel that money used to help other women avoid our plight shouldn't be held hostage to personal views. I also read that supposedly only 13 million of the money raised each yr. goes to research. I read this on Yahoo news. I hope I haven't offended anyone. No info if they will donate to something else to help women. If they don't want to give to planned parenthood then they should give to another program that provides these services or start doing it themselves.

I too read this and was not
I too read this and was not pleased at all. I would like to know specifics or stats of how many girls and women received these and other cancer screenings from Planned Parenthood, and have gotten a diagnosis because of it, and in turn, have gotten the care they needed. I am sure the numbers would prove that the funds are being put to good use. Not that this would be enough proof for those who control the pursestrings.0 -
Susan G. Komen funds abortions?
Will definately be looking for more on the situtation. Why should people be conned into thinking they are donating to Breast Cancer related stuff and then find out that money is being sent to an organization that promotes abortions? Not going into the 'right ' or 'wrong ' of abortion but abortion has nothing to do with finding a 'Cure' for breast cancer or supporting women who are fighting it.0 -
Amazing
what does funding abortions have to do with bc or mammograms. It is true that less than 2 percent of all monies collected for breast cancer goes to advanced research. I learned of this when I was first diagnosed stage iv, and so many of the clinical trials do not include stage iv in their trials. Most of the money collected goes to awareness and prevention. It is quite expensive to run all the ads, etc but money is needed for research and very few people, until they are in my shoes, have any idea that the money is not going to research!
Then to top that off in some states (15 total and some of those 15 have made other agreements with insurance companies operating in their states to allow clinical trial as viable treatment to advanced cancer) insurance companies don't allow clinical trials as they do not see trials as viable treatment for stage iv cancers (not only breast).
Which is absurd as it more of the costs are covered by the trials than standard chemo treatments.
Why does it matter where they are getting the mammograms? Not only that but Planned Parenthood goes by income, and does a lot of things for free, such as condoms, etc. I am sure that is also terrible because not only do condoms help with disease, but they may also prevent the need for abortions, but I have heard over and over how having condoms available is promoting unmarried sex???? None of this makes sense to me. It should be safety first.

I also heard it on the news
I also heard it on the news they said it was because Planned Parenthood was under investigation and non profits are not allowed to give to any one under investigation but they didn't say for what.I thought that some of the money Susan G Komen got was for women to get free mammograms and help pay health cost for those who could not afford it and the rest for research,i wounder what they do with all the money they raise as 13 million a year is not very much for the cost of research.

The money that Komen gave to
The money that Komen gave to Planned Parenthood did not go to fund abortions; it was earmarked to fund breast exams for the indigent. In my personal opinion, Planned Parenthood caved to political bullying and many, many women who need the help the most will now suffer.
By the way, I was one of the thousands who made a donation to PP yesterday--money that would probably have gone to Komen. My breast cancer donations are now going to BCRF.
I hate when healthcare is affected by politics!0 -

Dear Komen Supporter,
You may have seen recent news reports and Internet chatter about Susan G. Komen’s new granting policies and their potential impact on low-income and uninsured women. Those reports are far off the mark: Komen’s 30-year commitment to these vulnerable communities does not, and will not, change.
Komen Founder and CEO Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker clears the air in this “Straight Talk” video that reinforces Komen’s promise to help the most vulnerable women.

I also received the Komen video, but I am not buying it. First off, the decision does appear to come from their new right-wing VP who vowed she would defund PP. Secondly, initially Komen said they were pulling support because of the "investigation" against PP (another right-wing political ploy), but now they are claiming it is to make the organization more efficient.
Time will tell if it makes them more efficient, but my donations are going elsewhere. I believe PP is a terrific organization that does much, much more than fund abortions. They provide free gyn exams, breast exams and reproductive information, treatment for STD's, and birth control.
Being on the receiving end of unplanned pregnancies by working in the NICU and constantly dealing with dysfunctional families, infants born with STD's, substance abuse, neither parent employed, etc., etc...well, I digress, but to me, PP is a solution, not an institution to be torn apart by politics.
P.S. The two breast cancer charities that my family and I have consistently funded have been Komen and BCRF, so this breaks my heart to have to decide this.0 -

I would not donate a dime anymore to Komen. What they did was totally wrong in taking the funding away from Planned Parenthood. Because of this, who knows how many women will not get the proper breast exam that they would have normally WITH funding from Komen to Planned Parenthood and possibly end up with bc in its latest stages.
Komen bowed out because of pressure from the anti abortion people which is just plain wrong.0 -

I really have never been a
I really have never been a fan of Komen just because of some of the things I read about them on breastcancer.org. I remember reading that Susan G. Komen was suing organizations that used for the cure in their fund raising efforts for cancer. What I really found disgusting was that within the past few years, the person in charge of Komen, was the highest paid non-profit CEO/president or whatever they call it.
I realize someone has to have the highest pay, but I don't like it being the Susan G. Komen thing.
This is just another black mark against them.0 -

I have been going to Planned parenthood for most of my pre menopause years ....about 25 . Now I hear this Susan Kolman for the cure has become a politically conservative think tank and wants to pull out of helping PP???
WTH PP gets their funds from fundraisers not a penny comes from the government. Susan G
I posted it on my FB and am writing the SGK and letting them hear what I have to say. Keep up the media attention on this. Millions of women get medical care from PP.
Very disturbed,

What if the Komen foundation used their money to open their OWN clinics for uninsured and low income women?.... To provide breast exams, ultrasounds and mammograms..... After all, they take in millions each year...surely they could afford to do this....to be quite honest I'm not sending them any more money.....I made this decision long before this current news....I gave them money LONG before I was diagnosed....even my husband donated before my diagnosis...I may take flack for this but I do not believe in abortion...I won't discuss further this topic....because I beleve every life is precious....and this doesn't need to become a hot political topic...bc doesn't care...
We're all entitled to our own thoughts on this....again let them use now the monies that went to PP to open their own clinics...that would make all of us happy! We ALL want to find the cause and then the cure for bc...
Hugs to all of us brave women,

Janie:
I was planning to open a discussion today about the Komen Foundations decision to stop giving money to PP for mammograms. I am outraged by this. Have we gotten to the point where any group however small can threaten an organization or TV station and get their way? I have often wondered what is really done with all the money Komen collects. We all pray for a cure, but know that this is in the far distant future. What is within reach are earlier detection through latest technologies incl. mammograms, targeted therapies reducing side effests, etc. Komen will not get one penny from me and I'll also ask my friends not to donate, but I will mail a check today to PP.

PS - Yes, it would be nice if the Komen Foundation would open Clinics for women with all the hudnreds of millions they collect - but that is too much hands on and ain't going to happen!0 -

I have long thought that Komen was big business ever since I saw what the fee was to do their walk. I have walked for other charities before my breast cancer and never had a specific amount dictated to me. Whatever I raised and how many friends I brought to walk was always enough. I resent being told that to walk, I need a certain dollar amount. I also heard about the lawsuit because of the use of the word CURE.
As far as I'm concerned if they want to dictate who can use "cure" then all of their money should go to just that.
I wasn't familiar with Planned Parenthood until today while listening to talk radio and it sounds like they do wonderful things for low income ladies. I also heard about the new VP at Komen who is dancing around her decision. Politics always seem to prevail but, I don't like all this money going into so many avenues under the guise for a cure.
I do like the idea of screenings and mammo's for breast cancer because, of course, prevention is paramount where bc is concerned but it makes me wonder where all that money goes.
My thought on this is "everything happens for a reason", and maybe just maybe, Komen was getting too big for it's britches.0 -

Also, it is reported that as of today, PP has gotten almost as much money donated (because of this story) than they get from Komen in a year. The figure they used to get is around 600,000. annually.
The only problem with this is, we are a nation that jumps on these things and although everyone is being overly generous to prove a point, next year people might forget and PP will suffer at that time.0 -

Foundation this morning. It's too much to post and there does not appear to be a link on their website, but this is the highlighted paragraph for the Sacramento Valley Komen Foundation:
....."Like you, the Komen Sacramento Valley Affiliate is concerned about these changes and we, in tandem with the other Affiliates in the California Collaborative, are in discussions with Komen National headquarters. ...
"Please know the recent National policy changes in no way impact women in the Sacramento Valley Affiliate counties. None of our current grantees or most recent grant distributions for 2013 will be affected. Planned Parenthood has not applied for funds from us in the past two years. Our funding priorities continue to be access to screening, which Planned Parenthood does not provide locally."
Note the comment about PP not providing screening applies only to the local PP, not nationwide.
I hate the politics of healthcare. I think Komen just shot themselves in the foot.

Two sides
I have some feelings on both sides of the issue. I have difficulty with abortion but understand why a woman would choose to do so. She has an unsupportive network to help her raise a child. On the other hand it is a choice. Breast cancer and cervical cancer is not a choice at all. I feel sorry that women in general do not have the support needed to fulfil thier roles in society. If women had the support they needed abortion would not even be an issue to consider. For me the issue is this "How can I be supportive of women as a whole so as to not allow anyone to have to make a difficult choice"?0 -
I guess
I guess I am an idealist. Perhaps I ask too much of humanity.0
