Fentanyl
They prescribed me fentanyl 75mcgs, but I was still in bad pain, they also gave me liquid roxicet for breakthrough pain, but I couldn't take it, because it was too much for me. They didn't want to give me anymore, for fear of overdosing me. So, I was still in pain. But yes, I know others that had both. One guy going through rads at the same time I did was taking the fentanyl, Roxy, and atavan I think, to get through the mask.0 -
Kent,
I had so many drugs when I first came home from head/neck cancer surgery that I needed a wicker basket to hold them all, and I am sure that the fentanyl patch was not alone for pain. I will check with my local authority and get back to you on what else I was taking, but I am pretty sure one of the oxy's ws involved.
Take care,

I had all of those--fentanyl, roxicet, and atavin. That combination worked well for me and my pain level was tolerable throughout the radiation and chemo treatments. Fortunately, I was able to tolerate that combination of drugs, and was able to wean myself off them after the treatments ended.0 -

YES I DID
At my worst period of pain, I was on 150 Mics. of Fentanyl via a patch and also taking 20 mgs. of pure Oxycodon orally.
Thought for sure over the 4-5 months of doing this I was going to be a drug addict. I was never so glad to get out from under that "fog."

I was on the patch and
I was on the patch and oxycodone during the worst of treatment. Quite a combo as now i cant remember much of that time. I do remember the doc saying to use the oxy only for breakthrough pain but when your in that much pain who can tell the difference?0 -

I was also on the Oxycodon for several months the stuff works great but getting off of it for me was hell as I did it cold turkey, I will never do that again.
Great looking picture my friend

Hey Kent,
Most case where Fentanyl patches are used for cancer require an additional "fast acting" opiate in conjunction with the patch because the patch is great for persistent, chronic pain that requires a steady even dose, but it is ineffective in preventing "Breakthrough" pain.
Over a period of a couple of weeks they ran me through the gauntlet of Oxy's up to straight morphine and then started me on the Fentanyl relegating the morphine to "as needed"
If one is fortunate enough to come off of the pain meds, they then do it in the reverse order weaning the patient off the patch about 25 mcg/h at a time. Once to that level the morphine made it easy to end the Fentanyl all together.
I will let you know how getting off the morphine goes when they let me stop it, but cutting back to 1 tsp (oral solution) every 10 to 12 hrs has not been difficult.0 -

Trust me brother I know exactly how you felt. The Fentanyl had me feeling so normal during an extra long break between Chemo treatments due to a bad white blood count that I decided to stop it on my own. After a night of cold sweats, nightmares and every joint in my body screaming at me I learned my lesson with quickness. Cold Turkey is for samiches and nothing else!0 -

Thanks for the welcome. I can't believe it took me so long to find this site, but will be an active participant, in the hopes of helping people who are going through what I did in 2009. Speaking of that I see you joined in April of 2009--that was during my chemo+rad treatments--and I sure could have used some insight from others at that time. I am now 2 and a half years cancer-free, and going strong.0 -

Passed along the info, for which I am grateful. A green bottle of liquid Oxycontin seems to be one of the additional meds. I only have experience with Morphine and Hydrocodone as pain meds, so your info was most helpful.
The Subject in play is, again, my Cousin. He went thru John's regiment of chemo, then chemo and rad tx, which failed; then an 8-hour Op that took his voice box, etc.; and, months after that Op has been told he's still got C! His initial tx started a little over a year ago, and I figure he's been on pain meds ever since- especially since the Op last summer. I'm talking serious narcotics use for likely the past year, Folks. He had a long history of alcohol abuse (major) before C, and I reckon the pain meds replaced the booze, and know he's been on a serious amount of those meds for many months, so...Reckon the first order of business, though, is still what it always is with us- Priority #1 is getting rid of the C, at whatever cost. The Drs want him to go thru an MRI on 12/5, then try to treat the remaining C with rads.
And, of note/lesson to all: his medical bills over the past year must be over $300,000, which includes 3-weeks in hospitals, and a month in a Nursing Home, at least 5 PS/CTs, a couple MRIs, and physical therapy, etc., on top of the forementioned- AND HE'S NEVER HAD ANY INSURANCE! Figure Medicare/Medicaid is picking-up the entire bill, he's never really had a job that lasted any length, and is even getting SSI. So, that is a route that can be taken, though the quality of care is likely compromised. My cost was $3,000 with the two year's of deductibles, and I thought I got it taken care of on the cheap! FYI.
