Flouride tray alternatives

Hi All,
Went to see my ENT today and he scoped me and said everything looked PERFECT.
He was concerned about my teeth though. Didn't I read on here about some fluoride
gel or something one could use in lieu of trays? Any info would be appreciated.

Best to all,
Steve

    Trays
I use biotene floride tooth paste, but my dentist also made trays for me and told me to use them every evening.

    Hi Steve
I use Biotine also, but go every 6 months to my dentist for fluoride treatments and cleaning.
Don't know of it helps, but would really like to hold on to my teeth! Lol! So far so good!

If you are not going to do
If you are not going to do trays, you should probably get a prescription for Colgate Prevident 5000 toothpaste. It's stronger than normal tooth paste. Maybe get something like Act Total Care Dry Mouth with Flouride rinse. It's alcohol free.

I go every four months to the dentist because my extreme dry mouth is causing problems.

    Fluoride stuff
Hey neighbor. How's everything over in Texas ? I've been using Colgate Gel-Cam ( a gel in a tube that has 0.04 stainous floride ) for almost the last 3 years. I'm still using the trays that were made for me prior to treatment, and applying the Gel-Cam in the trays for once a day. I keep the trays in over my teeth for about 15 minutes a day ( each morning while I get dressed....I know. Strange routine.) Someone said on here that one could go to ****'s Sporting Goods or Academy Sports and get mouth pieces that athletes wear, and use them the same as Dental profession made trays, at way below the cost. I've yet to have any problems with my teeth since completion of treatment in June of 09. Also tell Santa to bring you a Water Pic with all the bells and whistles, and use it with Act Flouride half and half with water. If I can remember, I use this method every other night. I also use Prevident 5000....the Dry Mouth type.....at least twice a day, and Dental Hygenist cleaning every 4 months. Good luck.

    I've used Prevident
for 13 years, since my radiation. I also used Gel-Cam in trays for the first 11 years. The last 2 years I've not used the trays, under careful supervision from my regular dentist. I will go back to them now that I'm being radiated a second time, I suspect. That will depends on the recommendation of the guy I'm seeing next week in advance of radiation.

The problem with Gel-Cam is that it turns into a rubbery mess in the sink drain. I had to frequently remove the drain to clean out the silly-putty like gunk that would actually plug my bathroom sink up. Colgate denies it does this, but that is plain bull.

I am not totally convinced the trays are a must. It is the fluoride, and the length of time it is in contactt with your teeth and gums that matters. It probably could be brushed on a few times a day and have the same effect, provided those times were when you were not going to eat or drink forawhile.

    Tray or brush on flouride
    Steve,

Glad to hear that you got a PERFECT.

Just wanted to try and answer your question, I have tried both, using the trays for roughly 5 years with Perio-Check Flouride. About 1 1/2 years ago, I started going to another Dentist and he said he could tell I was using the Perio-Check Flouride as it turned my teeth brown. I thought it was all the coffee I was drinking.

He swtiched me to the Colgate Previ-Dent 5000 Flouride Gel, Fresh Mint. I now apply it with the Oral-B battery operated tooth brush. I do the same routine, brush it on, spit any excess out and not rinse or gargle for 30 minutes or longer. I tend to over do things and sometimes I let it set for an hour. Anyway, I was at the Dentist on Wednesday and was told my Home care is excellant. I had become so accustomed to using the trays, that I had doubts about brushing the Flouride on and how it would work. Seems as if it does the job just as well.

My Best to You and Everyone Here

    Oral-B STOP
    Hey Steve,

The stuff that the Dentist gave me is Oral-B STOP... They always give it to me for free. It's a pretty good size tube, 4oz., about the size of a toothpaste tube actually.

It's a clear gel, labeled as Anticavity Flouride Preventive Treatment Gel.

You brush it on after brushing your teeth normally, and then swish and spit, but don't eat, drink or rinse for 30 minutes or so...

    Hi John
Is the Oral-b STOP over the counter or prescription?

    Thanks

    No trays
I stopped using trays 7 years ago. My dentist believes they do not work as well. Problem he see's is the break down of most teeth is at the gum line and the trays do nothing for that area. He suggested I purchase a Sonic Care battery tooth brush and use it with most focus at a 45 degree angle at gum line using Bioteen Dry-mouth toothpaste. He feels the brush pulls the gum away and cleans it much better. Floss and then use the Sonic Care brush with SF 5000 Plus script from dentist (5$ per tube) along the gum line again mostly. Again the tooth brush pushes the fluoride in the gum line. Let it set in mouth for at least 30 min. twice daily.

About three years ago I added the waterpic in with the regiment, what a difference the amount of food it kicks out is unreal. I have not seen that much with any tooth brush or floss.

So my regiment now is start with waterpic using as warm of water one can stand, second I floss, third I brush with sonic care using Bioteen, the I waterpic again to remove all the tooth paste esp. along gum line so when the next step of fluoride with sonic care tooth brush, I believe the waterpic helps remove the tooth paste so I can get fluoride where it needs to be.

Since I have done this regiment I have no new decay, only break down of fillings that needed replaced and dentist does not know why the fillings are breaking down. If that is the only problem he said and I agree we can live with it.

I also suggest you see a dentist every three months with a cleaning each time. The dentist should have alot of experience with those who have had radiation treatment. Mine is at the Indiana University School of Dentistry.

Good luck choosing your line of attack in keeping your teeth.

By the way Walgreens has a special on the Sonic Care brushes at a very good price. Actually the best I have seen anywhere.

    Prevident
Where are you getting Prevident 5000? I going to get a script but when I looked online it the best price was about $12 for about 3.5 oz. I haven't checked to see if I can get a better deal using my insurance. I suppose the price isn't bad if it saves your teeth.

I think I pay more than $12 for the Prevident at my pharmacy, I'd rather spend that than have to go through hyperbaric and teeth pulling which I really hope I never have to do, given my extreme dry mouth and teeth issues. :(

I would think if you have perception that it would be less, no? You only use the Prevident once a day, though, so it's lasts like a month.

Twelve bucks is what I pay for Prevident 5000 at my Dentist. I use it at least 3 times a day, and it seems to last quite a while. I haven't checked at drugstore.com..

I just wondered if $12+ is the going price which it apparently is. That is what I paid for some other fluoride treatment that is a mouthwash type of product. I guess it is what it is. Thanks!

    GC MI Paste here
    Steve
My dentist recommended this paste for me. Got mine on Amazon for about $11.00 a tube. A tube lasts quite awhile, I haven't gone thru ten tubes yet and am 2 years post now. Just use it at night when the dry mouth is the worst. Hope this helps

Like Hondo, I use the SF5000, which Walgreen's substitued for the Prevident I was originally prescribed by the U of Iowa. Not sure if it's helping or not. Already had the bottoms of 4 front teeth rebuilt, and have need for a lot more work on the missing tops of all my other teeth. Does get discouraging, but that's just all part of it and the rads solution. Wish I could give you better news, but I don't know of any.

    Oral-B STOP
I'm not sure if it's the OralB STOP, regaining nearly all of my saliva, genetics, a combination of all, or it just hasn't caught up as of yet...2 1/2+ years post rads and treatment.

But my last dental exam a few weeks ago, I had no cavities.

Since treatment, I have had one cavity and a tooth with much work prior to treatment that came apart and had a crown put on.

The crown and ordeal with older fillings isn't uncommon for me from earlier pre-cancer treatment.

I had a root canal and crown before, as well as a cavity from time to time.

    keep it going
i did not start to see my big part of damage and decay start happening until approx. 4 years post treatment.

Keep the cleaning and multiple daily cleaning.
