Hi Doug,
Tomorrow is a big day but it will be over with and you will be on your way to being "normal" again before you know it. I was diagnosed on the 25th two years ago so we have that date in common, it is hard to believe how fast the time has passed. Add my thoughts and prayers to those that support you.
Gary
Thank you Gary for the encouragement. Really believe everything will turn out good, but the unknown caused me not to sleep well last night. Hope to get better rest tonight. Hopefully surgery will be early on the morning. Hospital let me know to be at hospital at 6:30 in the morning. Will let everyone know when I return home.

Doug, Confident that all went well for you this morning.
Got my diagnosis last week, 7.5-8.0 cm mass on left kidney.
Scheduled for laparascopic removal of kidney next month. (Apprently the surgeon is very busy).
As I have read through the many posts, they all sound similar to my situation. A routine physical found blood in my urine, further tests revealed the tumor. Shocked is a mild description of how I felt, as there had only been one instance of cancer in my family. But as I struggle with the emotional side of things, especially waiting weeks for surgery, I really feel positive about my outcome, and try to keep that positive outlook overall.
I also believe that prayer works, and as was mentioned in one of your posts, " Be where your suppose be, do what your suppose to do and let God take care of doing the healing."
This is an opportunity for us, to share with others as we go through this, and after we heal, to help others understand what to expect.
Let us know how you are doing...

Surgery went well. Removed left kidney. Still in hospital. Could not hold anything down on stomach. Finally figured out it was one of the pain meds. Doing better now, just very sore. Hope to go home Friday or Saturday. Thanks for all of your support and

Hi Doug,
Good to hear from you so soon, and happy that everything is going so well. It won't be long before you are back to your old self and wondering what all the fuss was about. Take it slow and easy for the first couple weeks and keep us posted on your progress.
Best wishes,

HOME!!!!!robert_douglas_smith said:Waiting on Tuesday.
Surgery 3 days away, have been staying busy and trying to get house in order. Fire wood for wood heater cut and stacked on front porch for wife in case it turns cold. Installed a hand shower-head in shower, already had a shower stool. Moved electric powered recliner out of storage room into bedroom. Going to spend tomorrow making needed repairs at the veterinary clinic were I work part-time. Monday I plan on spending with my two you grand-boys since I probably won't be able to play with them for a little while. Then the big day... Thanks everyone for your advice, words of encouragement and prayers. God willing I'll be fine!!!
Doug
Arrived home from hospital around 11:00 this morning. I am really sore in my stomach and my left shoulder is hurting , I guess from where they had to pull it out of the way. Even though I'm sore, I'm not hurting as bad as I thought I would be. My stomach looks like a war zone.We should know the lab results in a few days. Go back to urologist in two weeks. Care in the surgery wing of Rockdale hospital was great. I am really glad to be home. Thanks to everyone for the prayers and well wishes. I would especially like to thank my wife Debbie, she has taken great care of me, I LOVE YOU Debbie!0 -

Hi Doug,
There's no place like home!! I had some pretty intense left shoulder pain following surgery as well, they told me it is fairly common and mostly due to the gas they fill your abdomen with during the procedure. It took a few days to fully subside and walking seemed to help.
Good luck,

Doug,
Your story has helped me understand what I will be going through next month. Curious about how much you feel like getting up and around the first few days.
My surgery is scheduled for the Wed before Thanksgiving, and all our kids and grandkids were already planning to be here. Plus, here in Alabama, that Friday is the biggest college football game of the year, and we normally all gather to watch on TV. Hope they give me good pain meds! :-)
Keep us posted on how you are doing.

I was very fit prior to my surgery in March. My legs were very weak and had trouble walking for a couple days after surgery. I came home in 4 days and started with walks around the neighborhood for 10-15 minutes. Maybe 2 weeks later I was walking 3 miles. Started jogging again in about 3 weeks and did light resistive ex. Was golfing in a month. Just don't over do it. Listen to your body. Get up and move. Just remember, more is not necessarily better.0 -

Day 7
This week has passed by quickly. For a change i have followed the after surgery instructions.Yesterday my gastric system restarted. By far the worst was being sick due to the morphine. As soon as they changed the pain meds I stopped throwing-up. I hope to hear from the lab reports soon. All in all it has not been as horrible as I had thought it would be. Found the energy to get dressed and walk 1/2 mile outside. Wasn't that bad. My advise is: to do what your told, be where your suppose to be and let God take care of the rest.0 -

Getting back to "normal".
9 days post surgery. Wife returned back to work today. I haven't taken any pain pills for the first time today, have had no pains other than incision discomfort and that's not enough to take a pain pill for. Still taking it kinda easy. Television and internet getting boring. Will be glad to get back to a "normal" routine again. We are anxious to hear pathology report so we will know where we go from here. Doctor seemed certain everything was contained in kidney. Am Still hoping and praying for the best. To think all of this started with a sinus problem.0 -

Hope your recovery has been as good as mine. Haven't had that much pain only discomfort from incisions. Actually ventured out to Covington on my own today. Was great to get out of the house.0
