I will try and do the links for you, but I just remembered that I have never been able to successfully link to YouTube on this site. I don't know if that is because of my iPhone or what. It just throws me out to the expressions pages. So maybe if mine do not work, John can do them. Here goes nothing.

Edit: OK. Looks like they work. I think because i didn't get the site from the browser on my phone. I think my phone messes it up because it tries to go to the mobile site or something.
I did watch the radiation one. (I'm not watching any surgery. ) I have to say that it did make me feel a bit queasy to watch it. I think my mind will always associate that mask with nausea and the worst pain I've ever had in my life, with how bad my mouth and throat got.
You are the best. I appreciate you listing these sites. I didn't watch the surgery either, I am to queasy, but it was helpful to see what Jim went through during treatment.

Thanks for creating links. I have researched, but still haven't figured it out, even tried to cut and paste your links... didn't work.

It is good for them to see what it is that we go through during treatment, may be it will give them a better understanding of why not to mess with me, I will grab you and transfer some radiation to you. Ha ha ha

Linda,
A lot of the questions I had came from this discussion board. A few I had were:
1. What to do for the dry mouth, rinse, sprays, meds, ect.,... ?
2. Should I get a Flu Shot?
3. How much Tylenol can I take a day (until I HAVE to take pain killers)?
4. Will it affect my immune system? (Hanging around my grand-daughters and the germs that go with that). His answer was no since I am not doing Chemo, but it will make me fatigue which can let down the immune system... so kind of yes.. LOL.
5. What about some type of med to numb the throat just before eating, to allow for swallowing... like Lidocaine Viscous?
If you haven't, you will want to get with your dentist or go to a dentist that specializes in cancer and radiation of the head and neck. You will also wasn’t to get with a dietician/nutritionist. The dentist will make fluoride trays for you to use each night for flouriding your teeth to help save them.
I will add you to my prayers, don't hesitate to ask questions on here, this is a great bunch of people on here.
David
Thank you David....tomorrow is the consult day, and I hope this rad onco is prepared to spend some time with me answering questions

My last day of radiation, both parents took me to the hospital. I was allowed to bring them back with me. They got to stay in with the rad techs and see the whole thing. Afterward, I asked them if that made them feel better or worse now knowing and seeing first hand what I did every day, 30 times. They both said, worse. My step mom said there was no way she could have delt with the mask. Both of them were very disturbed by it.
Also, my district manager at work, was kind of a jerk. He really didn't understand what I was going through with my cancer, the neck dissection and radiation. The day I went home from the hospital, my step mom was so mad, that she was ok with stopping at work to pick up my pay check on the way home, so they could see how bad I looked. I stopped in at the end of radiation and I sent my jerk DM a picture. Course I don't know if it fazed him at all. When I told him I needed to take off for the FNAB and he was trying to get me to postpone it, he came in to try and argue with me. My tumor was the size of a large lemon and he said that it didn't look as bad as he thought it would. I wanted to ask him, if it was on his wife's neck, would he think it was bad then?0 -

Wow, I am flabbergasted by the lack of empathy of your DM... all I gotta say is karma.
I am watching "Horrible Bosses" right now, it's pretty funny.0 -

Yeah, they were not sympathetic. I didn't tell you the half of it. I often wonder about karna. There a few people in my life that are going to get it back in spades some day.
I wondered if Horrible Bosses was funny or not. If it comes on Starz or HBO, I will have to catch it.0 -

My reaction to the video that it was one of the most monumentally boring things I have ever watched – and I mean that in a GOOD way. I think the purpose was to de-mystify and to de-scarify the whole thing and in that it succeeded nicely. I might even send this to people including my family. I wish it had shown more of the mask and locking down but perhaps that would be unnerving to more people. As it is it is mostly implied.
However, Mary and I were talking about it and here our morbid sense of humor came out. I would love to take this video and intercut scenes from Young Frankenstein. When they say that they are about to start and there is a buzz I would love to put in the scene where he tells Eye-gore to throw the third switch: “Not the third switch, Master!!” We could drop in the scenes and sounds of the electricity bzipping and bzapping. I need hardly mention that the scene where the table is being adjusted reminded us of the one in YF where he asks her to elevate him… “Here, now, Doctor?” And then, finally, the one as things are shutting down and The Monster is on the table steaming and such while the sparks diminish would be perfect for the finish.
I think that this would be hilarious but, then again, I got 42 sessions of it and it worked. This time last year this was my daily life. They could burn my sense of taste but not my sense of humor which is largely intact even if a bit twisted. I hope you got a smile out of this, Dawn.
Then again, the contrast between the movie lunacy and the real-life placidity might be comforting for some. What do you think? Doug0 -

Doug and Dawn, you are making me laugh out loud, my wife is wondering what I am doing!
1st: Dawn, I hope you aren't working for that moronic DM anymore, what a looser.
2nd: My office encourages people to dress up for Halloween at work (if you don't have a client meeting that wouldn't have a sense of humor). We are a professional office, but still believe in having fun! Anyway several people have suggested I make some bolt looking cut outs for my neck. (I have about 14" of scars from the neck dissection). We will have to see how I am doing, dress up day I will be at 77% complete on the rad treatments!!
3rd: Now I have to check Netflix to see if YF is on it so I can watch it….. it’s been a long time.
Prayers to both,
David0 -

Share as you need to help others understand the process. No chemo here. From everything I read, I am glad I don't have to have chemo on top of everything else!
Is your tattoo real in your photo? Is it a cancer ribbon? Is it especially for head and neck cancer?
Prayers to you too John,
David
Yes it is real, Head & Neck colors, Chrimson and White, most all cancers have there own.
Keep it going, your doing great.

Interesting video but my machine and mask look a lot different. Has anyone used TomoTherapy? I still have 3 weeks left and I don't have any basis of comparison but so far I can still swallow with minimal pain and a small dose of pain killer although nothing tastes good so I have to force myself to eat. Ensure is my friend.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m46t834g_90
Best to all of you.
John
Wish I had TomoTherapy back in jan, 1996. I believe the side effects long term would be far less. I am thrilled you can still swallow at this stage. You have the best of the best treatment with TomoTherapy.
Thanks for the video.

I'm not currently working. I had every intention that I would recover and be like I was before I had cancer and they called me when I was done with rads, and I was hoping I'd be able to go back in time for the back to school rush that year. I remember asking him if he would let me come back slowly. He said no, that I had to come back and follow all the rules for store manager. Minimum 48 hrs a week, 3 closes a week, (close at 9pm) must work two 12.5 hr days at least, must work every Friday, Saturday, and Monday at least 8 hrs, and must work 6 days during holiday and peak time, must be able to lift/climb.....I could go on...but won't. I still cannot do majority of that. I was shocked that they would not let me ease into work again. They sucked to work for. Not as bad as when I worked 65+ hrs a week for McDs, but still sucked. The jobs I had weren't desk jobs, they were very physical with hellish hours, and I unfortunately cannot do it anymore. All I can say, is thank God I paid for disability insurance.
I have Young Frankenstein on DVD to watch whenever strikes my fancy.
That would be a great costume. When I had my stitches, everyone was calling me Sally, from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
I love getting dressed up! I will take any excuse to put on a costume. When I worked for McDs my store I ran, was in a mall. We would have trick or treat night and I and my employees, would dress up. Good times!0 -
Fear!1
Hi to all. I have St 4 tonsil cancer. Tonsillectomy with neck dissection at University Chicago. 3 of 8 weeks induction chemo tomorrow. Then 10 weeks chemo/radiation. Thats if they have 5FU which they are short on. I have done well with all treatments so far, always worrying in advance then thinking to myself "what was all the worry about". I do fear phase two as I call it; of this treatment. I am a healthy and strong. Also hope that this will be another why did I worry so much. I'm getting from all that this isn't easy but is it so bad? I am self employed and business can run pretty well without me so no worries there if i need time off. Thanks to all for sharing, John0
