Post Pet Scan Results
Ent said he wave 2 options wait 3 months for another pet scan or have a needle biopsy.
We asked the ent what he advises and without hesitation, he said biopsy. I agree, his suv from main tumor went from 10.7 to 5.8. That still seems a little high to me. We go on 9.14 for our biopsy. Wish us luck....What do you all think of the suv readings?

Biopsy
I was hoping for a clean scan result for you guys. After my 1st PET showed continuing activity, we waited out the 3 months for another scan.
A biopsy was not done due to the position of the cancer on the base of tongue, quite inaccessible for a simple needle biopsy. Another consideration was the cancer, after treatment, may no longer be a solid mass. It may be fragmented and a needle biopsy could possibly miss the cancer due to this. It was explained to us that a negative result for cancer from the biopsy could mean there is no cancer or that the needle penetrated an area that no longer is cancerous. The needle biopsy may not be 100% conclusive in this case.
Hopefully the biopsy will be negative and the follow up PET scan in 3 months will be clean or at least the size & SUV of the tumor will both continue to decrease, which would be a good indication that is not residual cancer, but probably lingering inflammation. Cheers.

I thought about how the needle biopsy can miss cancer, but with my husbands case, he not only has a high suv but the doctor also found a spot that was kinda of solid, he is hoping it's scar tissue, I believe that the high suv and the solid spot is what led the doctor to do a needle biopsy. I am not stressed I am just enjoying my life and just rolling with the punches.0 -

So sorry to hear the results are inconclusive. I am not sure what SUV is other than a vehicle that sucks gas. LOL Praying for the numbers to go down and the biopsy to show scar tissue. Hugs and prayers.

Pet results
I know just how difficult these days must be for the two of you. Buzz has had two suspicious PET scans and our Oncologist recommended seeing a surgeon for biopsies. The two areas in question are not well enough defined for a biopsy and we were advised by the surgeon to wait for the next scan. The next one is on the 8th and we are pretty anxious about it. With cancer, you never know when or if it will show up again. However, there is a possibility that the findings on your husband's scan are false positives. Our Radiation Oncologist says it is not uncommon for these hot spots to appear after head and neck cancer and they don't necessarily mean cancer. I am hoping that is the case with your husband. SUV is the FDG Uptake and is rated from 1-14 (I think). You want to be a the low end of that scale. I think anything over a 1 shouild be checked out. Yeah, I am kinda anxiously waiting. I am hoping for a negative biopsy. I would like to think it's nothing and the doctor is just being cautious..Did I spell that right? LOL0 -

I know, I want to know now. They are going to put him to sleep and the doctor said he is going to go in there and poke around and get several samples. Just a few more days.0 -

For comparison's sake my original PET SUV for the the cervical lymph node was 9.8 and my primary site at the BOT was 4.8. Biopsy is really the only definitive way of knowing. FNA biopsies leave much to be desired but it is your first step. It may be inconclusive as well so prepare yourself for an actual surgical biopsy next. Wishing you the best outcome!0 -

well, idk anything about pet scans, really, but wouldn't is make sense or even be "better" if the hot spot were the primary tumor site, because that would have been the greatest radiated spot, and then the hot spot would more likely be because of damage, no? as opposed to it being some new random spot to worry about. course what makes sense in my head, doesn't always fly. i have only had the one pet scan before my surgery and way before rads started.0
